What does /g/ think about ReactOS?
>>
It's interesting. Then it crashes and refuses to boot again.
>>
I haven't tried it. Should I?
>>
Barely usable but an interesting project nonetheless. If they keep their target narrow(windows 2003) they might be able to make usable by 2030. Expecting them to ever catch up to mainstream versions of windows is basically a pipe dream.
>>
>>56504139
Installs in a few minutes and you'll probably only use it for a few minutes after that
>>
How does it fare with compatibility?
>>
I don't.
>>
>>56504196
About as well as WINE I'd say
>>
>>56504518
Wine without working drivers
>>
>>56504155
Honestly, an open source XP would be pretty cool.
>>
>>56504196
Many of the user libraries are straight ports from wine. So when wine receives updates, they sync trunk with the latest development release of wine. And so they've also reported bugs they found from doing this.

It's a toss up if it'll work on real hardware. But for demo purposes it will work in a VM just fine (VirtualBox being the best choice). I've managed to get Steam to install and run, and several games to run. Someone got Skyrim running on it, although even if it were on real hardware it's still rather limited at the moment since it won't scale to multiple processors yet and they haven't worked on the 64-bit compatibility yet.

But even then its unstable as fuck. But you can also mount NTFS, ext-class linux partitions, BtrFS (I think?) and a few other filesystems which is neat. But it only installs to FAT32 currently.

Main problem is WINE on Linux is probably a better solution than ReactOS is. If you're going to run an OS you'd probably be better off with 2000 or XP rather than ReactOS. Bare metal ReactOS might be better but honestly I can't see any of them being useful bare metal right now.
>>
>>56504597
We already have 99% open source NT4
>>
>>56504713
Wine is a solution to a different problem. It was developed to provide a transition route for users moving from a Windows environment to a POSIX-compatible environment so they could retain their software investments until they see them as obsolete or find native alternatives.

ReactOS, on the other hand, could provide legitimate, native Windows application performance and possibly par compatibility where trying to shoehorn an application onto a different operating system would be undesirable or otherwise not possible.

There are many DRM systems, for example, that won't work in Wine because they expect ring zero access to be present, to be able to hook certain native windows libraries that Wine can't provide, and all of that grand stuff. ReactOS could facilitate an OSS alternative for users who need to retain those capabilities. In the enterprise world, there are many instances where that is required.
>>
>there's still no linux distro which only supplies the kernel and drivers and lets wine handle most of the GUI
>>
>>56504899
What 3rd party GUIs are available for windows that would work on wine?
>>
>>56504899

What do you mean? Just use MATE, skin it as windows 7 or xp, and install wine. Many programs work natively on linux anyway. If you need a windows program, then either:

1. Use windows
2. Use virtualization
3. Use wine
>>
>>56504944
ReactOS explorer?
>>56504956
Sure you can do that, but the programs will always look a bit off
>>
>>56504093
It's pretty nice.
The recently added OpenGL 1.4 support.
>>
>>56504093
Too lacking in functionality to be useful yet. I tried to install an application we use at work on it to see if I could use it to replace Windows XP, since my employer won't spring for new computers or even OS upgrades, but the .NET runtime needed wouldn't even install.
>>
>>56504816
Not open source, the source code was leaked which is not at all the same thing. If you don't have permission from Microsoft to use it you'll be sued and to get permission you almost assuredly have to sign a contract which likely prohibits you from ever contributing to competing products or disclosing what you know.
>>
>>56504899
>there's still not something nobody would want
>>
>>56504155
You say that like there is some thing windows has besides compatibility
>>
I never could get it to work on actual Hardware. virtual machine only.
>>
There's also a Linux fork that has Windows binary compatibility
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longene
>>
it can't get viruses if it's blue screening all the time
>>
I am guessing its extremely lightweight, but I bet its just as open to if not more to malware once it gets in there from some shitty russian porn video site.
>>
>>56504093
I'd give it a shot but I have a bunch of windows versions and I just run them in vm's.
>>
Every time I've tried it hangs. Might as well just use Windows.
>>
Works like a piece of shit
>>
>>56504093
interesting concept esp. the whole binary reconstruction + compatibility instruction.

but kind of irrelevant now...

microgay should just release an osl for legacy nt windows...
>>
>>56504093
they should rename it to RussianOS and just write malware for it.
>>
>>56504880
The main appeal for react OS is legacy hardware with only Windows drivers available. What software uses ring 0 DRM?
>>
Stuck in the 90s. Which isn't all that bad. It just defeats its purpose.
>>
>>56507984
same.
>>
>>56504093
it's pretty stable for 5 minutes, so it's better than anything /g/ has ever made.

Haiku is better in every way.

The world would have been a better place if BeOS won.
>>
>>56504093
never used it, but from what i read about it the developers are trying to make Linux in to something its not, Linux is not a windows alternative, even with wine its ability to run windows apps is hit & miss, about half the stuff i tried in wine would not work and the stuff that did about half of that was slow and buggy, just a few apps were usable, a person would be better off dual booting Linux & Windows if it was that important that they needed to run windows apps,
>>
>>56510620
It's a rewrite of windows you faggot, there is no linux in there.
>>
>>56510620
I think you cannot read.

poor man's windows

More like ReactionaryOS
