Hello /g/ I am potentially conducting undergraduate research in statistical mechanics an in order to do so in need to learn the C/C++ Programming language. Does anyone know what would be the best way to do so?
read a book nigga
do you know other languages or first time programming?
Do you really need to know C/C++?
I'd recommend Python instead.

My professor I'm working with said no to matlab and python, he also recommended I use fortran (which is severely old). This is also my first time programming.

If you're going to do research, this is as good a time as any to learn how to use google.

Fortran isn't a bad first language desu. It has a few idiosyncrasies but you'll get used to them quickly. There's still loads of legacy code and even new code written in fortran, especially in physics. If you're going to do scientific computing, python with numpy and scipy are probably the way to go for at least the next 5-10 years.

Did anyone actually learn to program in C with that?

as references when learning. Had no problems with either them although I preferred looking at the K&R manual.
The best way is Foundations of Computer Science C Edition, free too

So how did you learn, can you give me a little walkthrough please?
I am not OP but I am also a complete beginner.Which programs should I use in Linux to learn programming?
