I know this has been asked in one form or another before but what is the best programming book for beginners? It can be java, c, or python (though I would prefer one of the latter two). I am looking for something that covers universal concepts and best practices that are relevant to most, if not all programming languages. For instance, a book that talks about why it's important to comment your code, explains what if and else statements are and why you use them. I'm really interested in the global concepts of software programming in addition to the language rather than just the language itself. Thanks in advance.

This exact thing happens to me too. Safari on my iPhone.

My guess is it's a dodgy ad placed on the homepage. So anyone who visits is redirected to a whole bunch of crap.

I have also noticed another weird ad, on /pol/, on desktop. This weird little video player sometimes appears in the bottom right. It's happened to me on two or three separate occasions.

So yeah, Hiro is selling space to some dodgy ads. This wouldn't have happened on moot's watch (maybe).

Why is there a new thread? The bump limit wasn't reached on the last one... Whatever I'll spam my question here too.

I have some JS that needs to store a two strings, and an int for some number of entities. I was storing everything in one object with an array for each field. The example seen later stores it as an array of separate objects. Is one of these more correct than the other? What's the difference?

>What I did
var data = {
string1 : ["entry1a", "entry2a", ... "entryna"],
string2 : ["entry1b", "entry2b, ... "entrynb"],
int : [], // gets initialized to zero to match other arrays elsewhere
current : 0

>Example

var data = {
current = 0,
entity : [
{
string1: "entry1a",
string2: "entry2b",
int : 0
},
....
{
string1: "entryna",
string2: "entrynb",
int : 0
},

The For loop is the first problem.

You have an array with 3 elements but you're attempting to iterate through 10 within your array. What happens when i = 3? The app will attempt to access invalid memory and crash.

Also, you're right, that while loop is not going to do anything.

It's hard to even answer since we don't know if that desktop you're planning to get is significantly better than the laptop or not. We also don't know how much time it'll take for you to get your own monitor. We also don't know what purpose other than a ps2 emulator you have for getting a computer.

To make use of the high refresh rate a 1070 will work if you turn down settings, a 1080 will do better but can still struggle to go much above 60 FPS on ultra in some games.
>>
>>56499941
PCSX2 depends almost entirely on single-threaded CPU performance, by default it uses two threads, but activating MTVU bumps it up to three. An overclocked 6600K is probably the best CPU you can get for squeezing out everything it's worth.
The GPU is dedicated to drawing the window frame, which is hardly process intensive, any inexpensive recent GPU will let you run at several times native resolution.
Nothing else has a tangible impact, 95% of emulation is CPU-bound with emphasis on clock speed, regardless of system.

It depends on the speed of the HDD or is limited to the speed of an SSD. Fragmentation also is a big factor. Antivirus works by reading from the disk, calculating through the CPU, and repeating, so it's obviously a major factor. It's really a mix of the two, and it also somewhat depends on what algorithms they decide to use. RAM is a factor, but not a major one.

I used to have a gigabyte motherboard that accepted this via an onboard usb 3.0 female, but i upgraded my stuff to a asus z170 pro gaming mother which only has a male usb 3.0 connector.

The really odd thing is ive read other reviews from corsair air 540 users having a female usb 3.0 header rather than male like i have. I haven't explicitly verified this, but I can't imagine a scenario where it wouldn't have permissions for it.
If the compiler is run from the AppPool or the IIS User account, then I've granted Full Permissions to both of those accounts for the project folder.
If it's run as the local account, then it's run from the admin account so it should definitely have access.

It is.

I assume the config files are fine, since the application was working fine until we had to do security settings (government STIGs if you're familiar with them).
The plan for tomorrow is to start fresh and go setting by setting, making sure the application works after each change to isolate the origin of the issue.

I appreciate the help, though.

Does anyone know a place to buy used computers that's reliable?
I saw a bunch of refurbished on Newegg and Dell that I can get for $100-$200 with duo core at 3.0 ghz. I figure another $50-$100 for a better graphics card. It should last me at least a year before I can save up for a better pc. The one I'm using is on the verge of dying, barely runs anything new, and just tried the new wow expansion and I can only get 10-15 fps. Two questions:

1. Is anyone else getting their shit pushed in by the new AMD Crimson drivers lately? 16.1.1 for me: Constant black screens, can't even get past the windows boot screen sometimes.
I've been using an R9 290 Tri-x without any problems up until a couple of weeks ago and it's just been getting worse ever since. Should I wait until they come out with a new driver? (Fuck that) or should I just get a new graphics card? (Fuck that as well)

2. I did a fresh install of Windows 7 on a fresh hard drive because of question 1 and installed the drivers that came with my motherboard. I can surf the net straight away via the ethernet cable hooked to my router, but I can't seem to download large files: Download speed grinds to a halt when I try to download something like 200mb in size, regardless of browser. My wireless devices like my laptop can do this without any problems whatsoever. What the fuck is up with that???? I don't think my PC recognises the router.

My bad, I should have mentioned that sometimes I get lucky and it does get past the boot stage, the login screen and even loads the desktop. But with the new drivers, even if I do something that is minimally graphics-intensive like opening a window, I get shafted with the black screens. At earlier occurences I would have to be playing a game in order to get the black screen, but with the new drivers it seems to be constant.
>>
>>56505120
Sounds like hardware failure. Install the older drivers, try older and older and see if any works better, if not, try a different GPU (even old cheap shit or a friend's just to try).

I have used an ISO which i downloaded directly from microsoft. Could this be the problem?

No, that is what you should use. Something else is the issue. Try USB 2.0 like the other anon said.

For the past several weeks, my taskbar has been frozen upon boot. It unfreezes after about 1 or 2 minutes, followed by the calendar loading in, and notifications popping up for all the programs I've set to autolaunch.

What is causing this? Could the latest update be doing something?

so I got memed into a 6700k even though im still using a 650 ti boost and mechanical drive. I just have half the cores turned off and max cpu state at around ~2ghz and it never breaks 40c. It's already way quieter than my old shitty cpu but i was wondering if it's safe to get one of those passive coolers for it, does it run at full speed for a significant length of time when booting before user settings are applied, (remember, mechanical drive here) and could that be a detriment with no cpu fan?

Also, can i even do this? I feel like I'd just get fan errors at POST every time, but i havent even bought the thing.

>>
>>56506233
I don't think you grasp the dynamic here. ISPs and your university would not care a ton about pirating, except for the bandwidth it uses. You would get a fairly mild crackdown if that was it, if anything. But if they don't come after you then THEY are on the line for infringement, which can be really fucking expensive, so they do go after you. Universities in particular are very sue-able, so you're at much greater risk there. It doesn't help that an account can usually be tied directly to you. Just be aware that people have gotten burned pretty bad in the past. I wouldn't push your luck.

this. typically home users aren't the ones that get hit with fines and shit, it's when some dumbass does it at work and his company either takes the hit or passes it on to that employee.

>inb4 anecdotal
I worked for the MSP to a company where a couple of guys got hit with huge fines for downloading movies and shit at work. It was super easy to track down the usernames and exact time that they did it.

Now, if your school is pants-on-head retarded and your domain account is able to make a local admin account, you can name it Jiggaboo McGee and download whenever since the downloading wouldn't be tied to your account.

ok I installed the vsftpd deamon, but my phone won't connect

I have the config set to listen on 2112
netstat -ant says it's listening on 2112
and I port forwarded on my router

on my other computer the command:
ftp (my ip) 2112
properly asks for my login and then logs in

so why won't my phone connect?
is the app i'm using (ES file explore) the issue? because it connects fine when I give it the local IP instead

I can boot into android recovery and my options are rebbot system now, reboot to bootloader, apply update from ADB, apply update from SD card, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, and power off.

How can I fix this so I can boot normally and go from there?

Long story short, I fucked up on a build and the person I built it for wants to have 6 monitors and the mobo I have only has one x16 slot.

That's the instructions for getting the servicepack style rollup+ july's updates. Weirdly it will do just about everything EXCEPT get windows updates working. Microsoft done fucked up bad this year.
>>
>>56506751

MUST it be x8? And, I'm assuming you mean a PCIe 8 lane card, which would also (probably) be a PCIe 2.0 slot.

Because, any 16 lane card (even for PCIe 3.0) should be backward compatible. And quite more powerful.

Damn. Just realized ... I don't know if there are even 8 lane PCIe slots that can't accept x16 cards. Does such a thing happen?
>>
>>56506818

Thread's about to max out, but this one:

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/F9Gj4D/msi-motherboard-z170agamingm5

If I could get 2 x8 cards, then he could run six moniors as opposed to four.
>>
>>56506849
Anon just use 2 normal videocards.
They will work as x8 and x8.
>>
>>56506866

This is the card that he got:

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/mfH48d/xfx-video-card-r9390p8256
>>
>>56506881
Bad selection, but he can just get another GPU.
It will make the PCIe X16 ports work as x8 but he will be able to use 6 screens with no problem.

There is nothing wrong with his build, there is nothing stopping him from using another GPU to add more screens.
>>
>>56506909
>>56506881
TLDR:
when you use 2 videocards most motherboard make the PCIe ports work at x8 and x8.

This doesnt mean you need a x8 videocard, just that both x16 videocard will work at x8 limits.
>>
>>56506909

I see. So there will be no performance hit at all? Also, I'm looking for another card to fit one of the two x8 slots.
>>
>>56506935
On that card? no.
On a high end one maybe.

Another R9 390 maybe for crossfire? its not a good idea but it would be easy meanwhile he has a good PSU because the R9 390 uses 250-300w IIRC.
>>
>>56506963

But with only one x16 slot, I can't fit another R9 390 in there... I need a card that can fit one of the other two slots, as seen here:

>>56506849
>>
>>56506995
Anon, you can use a x16 card on a x8 slot.
Hell, you can even use it on a x4 slot but there would be bottleneck.

The second you add a second card your x16 slot will stop working as x16 and will work as a x8 one.
Your second one will work as x8 too.

This keeps happening every so often. I sent an RMA to Asus a month ago and no reply. I heard the customer service was shit and they expect me to pay for shipping. Am I going to have send another RMA or call them and yell at them to fix their shit?

Another question is is there a company that sells GPUs that don't have shit customer service?

Maybe this is a /wsr/ question, but I'm at my wit's end here. I built a computer about 10 months ago, and MOST of the time, it works flawlessly, but maybe once every other day it has a random hard freeze.Usually when it happens, the audio buzzes really loudly, and the mouse and keyboard become unresponsive, but still powered on. The computer fans are all still running. Anything that was on the screen stops moving.
It''s not a repeatable thing either.
-The temperatures on it are fine, usually around 29c idle, 65c max load.
-The 600w power supply SHOULD be enough to power the unit.
-I've run both chckdsk and other diagnostic software on both my hard drives, and I even booted with nothing but a live boot usb of ubuntu to make sure it wasn't the hard drives.
-I've run windows memory diagnostic and memtest on the ram
-I booted with another video card
-I checked all the cables in the system five times. They are absolutely plugged in correctly.
-All drivers and software are up to date, clean installed, made damn sure of it.
The only things I can think of are somehow the cpu is fucked up, or, much more likely, a motherboard problem. My gut instinct says the audio is fucking up somehow (it's more likely to crash when I'm watching videos or have music on).
Has anybody experienced a similar issue? Anybody have my same motherboard? (Gigabyte 970-a u3dp)
>tld;dr shit freezes what do?

10 months old. I'm not really sure if I still have warranty papers either. I might, but it's going to take some digging through a lot of other papers.
That besides, I bought one of those OEM windows licences, so the product key is tied to the board. If I replace the board, I may lose my windows key. The board cost like $70 and the windows licence was $85
