I tried going Gapps free, but I rely too much on Google maps and hangouts.

That's not the problem.
The overcounted is actually a marshmallow bug. All it means is that the phone loses track of what's draining battery. It doesn't actually drain extra battery or anything it just doesn't know where it's going.

Unfortunately our phone has lost a lot of reputation ever since Lenovo acquired Motorola.
That being said, the Moto g 3 and moto x 2014 already have some N roms that are being developed.
Cyanogen has also said they started working on cm 14. I'm not sure when we'll see nougat officially, but by the end of this year we'll probably see some custom roms at least.
