Imma go full shill up in here and argue that if you check user data, most people don't even use the headphone jack on their phone to listen to music

just off personal experience, most people who you see with a phone day to day, do not have headphones attached to them, this adapter is really only an inconvenience to a minority of users

Why didn't you jump off the iOS bandwagon sooner, idiot? The very first time I realized that Apple was removing apps from the app store for dumb reasons (back in the 3G era) I swore I'd never buy another phone that didn't allow me to sideload.

Mostly hope that things would get better. I was so disillusioned when I say the iPhone 7 keynote. Like dam, they just don't give a fuck anymore. As long as there are a few brainwashed sheep they will shove anything down people's throat. Next they'll probably remove the camera and require a $300 adapter or some shit.

I see your shill and raise you a counter-shill. The point is that when you want a headphone jack, you won't have one. If I had some stupid adapter to listen to music there is a 10% chance I am going to find it after not having needed it for 6 months.

If you need 3.5mm and charging in your car and can't replace the head unit, Apple has been selling a Lightning connected audio dock for years already. No it's not free but maybe if you're buying a $650 phone you're already used to giving them money.
>>
>>56486510
It's incorporated into the price.
>>
Was that design patented? I don't think so.
I agree that Apple is fucking stupid, but this is a pretty shitty argument
>>
>>56485670
>just off personal experience, most people who you see with a phone day to day, do not have headphones attached to them, this adapter is really only an inconvenience to a minority of users
1. Most people don't use headphones full stop
2. Of those who do, they use 3.5mm jacks
3. By your argument I don't see most people who use phones using mains power. LEL mains power is OLD *shows slide of mains power*, who needs it? iPhones will now only charge via USB
>>
>>56485628
This seems like it would be really annoying when you're trying to put on music at a friend's house or in a car or basically anywhere.
Normally if you want to put a song on, you can just plug the aux cord into the headphone jack and you're away. Who really wants to carry around a special adapter to do that?
>>
>>56486602
What does it matter whether it was patented?
>>
If you think about it, Apple is really ahead of the game.
This is the future of technology and that cord is going to go obsolete.
Have fun staying in the past. Why would you need the cord when you have bluetooth? Most cars nowadays won't even need an AUX cord because of bluetooth. Earphones/Headphones have already gone bluetooth and if you want a cord, just plug in the damn aux cord.
>implying bluetooth ruins audio quality.
It's a placebo effect and I'm 100% sure you can't tell the difference. You are not 100% focused on music 100% of the time.
CHECK. MATE.
>>
>>56486613
What, do you want a mains transformer and a permanently attached cord with British plug on your phone? No you don't.

>>56486578
it's not just your personal car that's the problem, it's everywhere else you might go. If they sell enough of them and the users refuse to adapt, then society will cater to them and Lightning audio inputs will be the spitoons and ashtrays of the future.

>>56486651
Apple gets $4 in license fees for every approved Lightning accessory.
>>
>>56486668

The worst thing about iPhones are their non-standard ports. Otherwise they're actually pretty decent phones (probably still more expensive than they're worth).
I know this means more profits for Apple due to people having to buy their special adapters, but surely there must be a point where Apple fanboys get sick of this shit.

It's not just music. Watching Netflix or a movie now will be difficult.
>>
>>56485670
Except you'd be wrong.

Most of the day people don't use their phones as music devices (although many do in office situations, 95% of office PCs have shitty ground loop hum and static over the headphone jack, so listening to music whilst working is often done via a phone left on charge...)

However it's either side of the workday where people use their phones as music devices - the hundreds of millions of people who commute on public transport every day - they listen to music on their phones.

Apple's changes seriously hurt the former (can't charge and play music at the same time) whislt Apple's changes make little difference to the latter (implying bit of extra cord is ruining your music on the way home experience, unless you lose it...)
>>
Small inconvenience? sure

But sooner or later this will be the standard, and its a small price to pay to use a superior device.

Also what is Replicant? Why do people use it?
>>
>>56486668
If you even use bluetooth you would know that it lags. Enjoy having a half-second audio delay on every video that you watch.
>>
>>56488373
If you don't want to use the terminal there are multiple apps to so the same thing. You click share from the YouTube app and it sends the link to the app where you can download the video in any format, optionally leaving only the audio.

Replicant is one of many custom Android builds. Specifically, replicant aims to remove everything Google added to Android and only uses open-source drivers for the hardware it runs on.

I don't really mind the removal of the headphone jack. What I do mind is that they use lightning. They should have gone straight to USB-C. Now you can't fucking use the earPods on a MacBook or actually any computer at all, which is ridiculous. And I don't see a way out of this, it's just a clusterfuck. They could add lightning ports in their next iteration of MacBooks, but they are literally useless on computers. Apple wants a one-for-all port, which is a good fucking idea, but they quickly need to realize that lightning is not gonna be it.

Like if you use a USB extension between the two cables, if you use a different source or a longer cable.
I know there is tricks you can do like turning off data and it can charge anyway, but you shouldn't have to.

No. Only macfags believe that the future is 100% wireless. Wireless always had and always will have drawbacks in comparison to cable. Interference is a thing and it is becoming an ever greater problem with more and more wireless devices. Cable is cheap to produce and much more reliable. Even if a plug/standard does become obsolete, you usually remove it when the use declines, not when 90% of people actively use it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel#History
See how silly your agument is? If a technology works you don't really change it. No company feels the urge to change an electrical socket buecause it does what it was intended to do. I wouldn't criticise apple for pushing for smaller connectors like the 2,5mm jack but pushing for complete removal of it is just bullshit.

It may be inferior in that regard, but it is CONVENIENT

That's why mp3 replaced CD's even though CD's sound better

We're obviously ready to give up a little sound quality in exchange of convenience, history has taught you this

Don't you understand, plebian? Bluetooth is how audio was always meant to sound. I'm not defending apple

I don't give a shit about your petty flame wars, apple vs android anything like that

I am making a case for wireless tech.

You don't plug an ethernet cable to your phone, do you?

I bought my first pair of LG Tones in 2012. The fact is they sound great, they get charged once every 4 days, and they're convenient as fuck.
They never died or failed on me, I simply retired them last year, in 2015 and bought a pair of LG Tone Infinims with better sound.

I want wireless to become the standard so we can research and progress with wireless tech so in the near future it sounds JUST like wired.

Please, stop hindering progress.

I think the lightning headphones will ultimately be a force for good. Most people already own one or more sets of 3.5mm headphones, but won't want to use them with a cumbersome adapter. Naturally most people won't want to throw them out either. Those that don't will have to find another use for them.

And this is where Apple's genius kicks in. For years I have been an enthusiast and proponent of urethral insertion of various cords. And no cord works better than the ubiquitous 3.5mm audio jack. Especially the Apple models with the slim connectors. By taking away the current practical use for the headphones Apple is staging a new world of pleasure for their customers to explore.

The tingiling of forcing the plug in to the opening. The buildup you feel feeding the entire length of the cord through your urethra to your bladder. The tension as you hold the dangling earbuds. The ecstasy as you yank them down like a parachute rip cord.

And Apple is helping to share this feeling withes everyone.

You have a poor understanding of audio. The end signal that reaches the coil around the magnet in a speaker has got to be analog. Generate a square wave with audacity and compare it to a sine. This is the difference bewteen an analog signal and a digital one. The only difference apple made is where the digital to analog conversion happens.

Think of all the people who listen to it on the bus, at work, in the gym, connecting to their car, etc.

Over wireless, most likely due to your provider not wanting app upgrades clogging their wireless networks and for dealing with customers that blow their data limit with app downloads and updates unknowingly. This is only for single apps. You can download well over 100MB wirelessly, but a single app download/update cannot exceed that limit. There are absolutely no restrictions on size over wifi.

Phrasing matters. You made it sound like there was some weird 100MB data cap.
-----------------
All that aside, I think this was a bad move by Apple (the headphones, don't give a shit about the restricting the size of downloads from the app store).

People keep pointing to how the Macbook Air dropped its optical disk drive and was still successful, despite the outcry of critics. The thing is, the Macbook Pro still had one for some time, though it eventually dropped it down the road.

If the iPhone 7 had 2 options, one with a 3.5mm jack and one without, that cost 50$ less, no one would complain and many would probably praise the move. The fact that it's being forced down the consumer's throats reinforces the notion of Apple building a walled garden and making its customers invest heavily in the Apple architecture.

I can justify the Lightning port in lieu of any type of USB more than I can the dismissal of the 3.5mm jack. There are tons of sizes of micro USB, it's hardly standardized. The 3.5mm jack is about as ubiquitous and universal as it gets.

Even if there's no interference from the adapter, it's so unsightly and inconvenient that it'll likely make many people who spend as much or more on headphones as they do phones jump ship. This type of consumer is also Apple's target demographic.

They should have launched the headphones first, built up support, and then shift over. If these headphones fall out as easily as the Ear Pods do, especially while exercising, then this is just the beginning of a big fiasco. This adapter better not be flimsy either.

Nothing. Most people don't use windshieldwipers anymore and if they do they should just not drive in the rain.

Holy fuck! That's a good idea!

If Applel bundled something like with the iPhone 7 they would be actually competent but no they chose the shitty quick and cheap solution because they are a bunch of cheap faggots.

Pulse width modulation. But unless it's incredibly fast, which can be cumbersome for the cpu it's not really good. But you can also feed a pwm signal trough the 3,5mm jack

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_Stream_Digital#DSD_vs._PCM
Forgot to paste link. PCM is what is commonly used, a simulation of a true analog signal. DSD is pulse width modualtion which is essentially fast pulses into the speaker all at the same voltage. Never really caught on. I actually think apple intends to feed a PCM signal through two of the lightning port pins.

>Another device to charge is 'the future'
I think its funny that the V20 was announced at almost the same time. Shows you which companies are focused on pushing features instead of shaving them off one by one in the name of 'thin and light'.

By ditching otg support, expandable storage, being able to connect as media devices, industry standard usb plugs, etc.?
So if android has to "catch up" with iPhones I'm guessing iPhones have to chatch up with nokia 3310.

Yes! Can't wait to get my hands on some µ∥™ (thats micro-parallel for you uneducated android cucks)

Hey, I'm the same, it kinda feels nice to just tune everything out, even without any music palying
>>
This is what made the gameboy advance SP really annoying for me to use. The stupid headphone socket adaptor was always getting lost

I ride the train 2 times a day, and at least 60 % of the people on the train are listening to music on their phones, with regular headphone jacks.

>start smartphone use with iphone4, everything works great, doesn't break
>everyone tells me to try android phones
>try samsung galaxy s4, tons of hardware issues and it won't even read the sim card half the time now
>decide to go back to iphone for my trouble because I need a phone to work as a phone.
