A lot of win refugees want to make the switch but are still hesitant. Since complains exist about GNU/Linux users not being polite lets change that a bit and share some advice. What would be your advice for anons making the switch?
My advice is to look at how many bits your computer is by looking at the system type in system Information from the system tools folder, that way you know what version of distro you want to install. To make space in your machine by defragment windows if you plan to dual boot.
Speaking of distros, I don't plan to start another distro battle, but if you want easy stay away from Gentoo or Arch for your first distro. I do recommend to install a distro that has ubuntu in its name, but is your choice anyway, you can find your style of distro by doing a little research here http://distrowatch.com/

You can leave now, Microsoft tech support.
2 nights ago Windows 10 forced-updated, then halfway through it began shutting down for 3 hours. I turn it back on and it wants to reformat and reinstall Windows.
I'll admit it, I cried.

You can use a Linux live cd to rescue all the data before Windows reformat your computer.
How do I wipe a laptop completely, OS and all, and then install, say, Devuan (Debian without sucksomedicks)? I will be using an old IBM Thinkpad.
