I've used modern iPhone and Android devices, both in professional and personal scenarios so I would hope my views are somewhat level-headed. Current personal phone is an iPhone 6s so I'll argue some reasons in favour of Apple's latest moves:

Easily a talking point for both angered customers and opposing camps. As someone who listens to a lot of music day-to-day I also find it hard to see myself getting used to it. But when it comes down to it, I'm not going to bitch about the adaptor because its tiny and doesn't harm usability in any way, especially since Im going to keep it attached to my favorite earphones. I would however like to see a threaded 3.5 adapter. This change's current/future benefits (digital sound, peripheral controls and processing, structural integrity, waterproofing, internal real estate, thinness™,etc..) outweigh the slight inconvenience of free adapter that reminds me of being a cuck.

I can't remember a time when I did this? I can't speak for everyone but i do not know a situation where I would. If i can charge my device Im usually at home and things are playing over my sound system. In the car the audio would be handled by 3rd party adapter at the same price of an aux cable.
