Firstly, you're in the minority of deformed-ear people. The EarPods are the most perfect fitting things for me personally, they're very secure but at the same time feel like they're not even in there. It's a lot of money for what they are. The profit margins probably aren't big but the added cost comes with no benefits and heavy penalties like being 500x as easy to lose. It'd be like paying $40 for a jar of hand made free range organic peanut butter. Sure they put a lot of effort and work into this product and their profit margins are probably slim but it doesn't taste any different from other peanut butters and on top of that it tends to separate and a layer of oil forms on the top after about an hour.
