MediaTek's 10 core chips have three separate clusters of cores so they have finer granularity in power draw as a workload demands more performance. All testing done proves that the scheme does save net power.
Apple is just playing catch up now, though it does hint at them moving towards more multitasking on their OS. Small cores excel at handling background tasks.
