The whole presentation felt weird to me.

Maybe it was the change in font. Or the fact that they seem to have rushed through everything. Or both.

Although, the fact that they rushed through a lot of it and that there was a huge number of new features or details that they wanted to cover with the watch and phone in order to fit it in about an hour and 45 minutes with the (rather creepy) musical performance, makes me think. I don't know that Apple's solution is the right one, but the presentation is right about one thing: by today's standards, headphone jacks are honking huge and the only serve a single purpose. Damn near everything else in a smartphone does multiple things, making a headphone jack pretty damned low value in comparison. This is true even if thinness isn't a goal.

People have tried to add additional functionality through hacking the connector with voltage changes to signal different things (inline controls) but that doesn't work particularly well – if the jack gets scuffed or stressed the wrong way all the sudden voice controls keeps activating itself when your headphones are plugged in. Physical limitations limit the number of functions that can be added, too.

They could try creating a new open headphone standard, but who the hell else besides Apple is going to adopt it? And it's not even any better than just using the lightning port for headphones in terms of the adapter problem.
