Hey /g/ I'm thinking on installing Arch on my main desktop instead of win10 cancer. I've never done a full disk encryption on a Linux install before, so I'd like to try it.
I'm thinking of using a keyfile stored on a USB and a passphrase. What encryption solution do you recommend? I'm been planning to use dm-crypt in either plain or with LUKS.
Would I reach the same end goal if I just encrypt my /boot with a passphrase and store that on the USB instead?
As I said, never done anything like this manually before, so any recommendations would be appreciated.
Inb4 install Gentoo
Can you even greentext?

just go with debian and click "graphic install", then click "full disk encryption with seperate home folder"
sounds like that's what you need, you winbabby

don't forget to sage next time ;)

what the fuck are you trying to hide?

if you are just a paranoiac i can't stop you but i think you are just trying to hide your illegal porns. Don't forget to buy a vpn client.

I'm living with roommates, and we're all going to a IT school. I don't like the idea of them being able to cold boot my system. The keyfile is only for the fun of it. ;)

consequences of losing that usb will be greater than losing your house key.
Why not just set up a virtual machine on a large USB flash drive and keep your physical machine as nothing but a virtual host. That way you carry your PC with you every where you go and don't have to worry about anyone accessing it without your knowledge.

I'm planning on making an online backup.

I'm going to be using more than 200 GB's on it.

>large
>200 GB
how are those floppy disks holding up?

128gb is the largest reasonably priced flash drive. 512gb are ~$150 on Amazon. Typical flash drive size is still 16-32gb friendo

I was saying that having only 200GB to run a PC isn't much
My music library alone is 207 GB
>it's mp3 v0
>not all music in FLAC & V0 MP3 & V2 MP3 & WEBM embedded Vorbis to cover all usage cases
-_-

Then a removable HDD if that's not enough space. It honestly sounds more like OP just wants to fuck around with encryption for fun rather than practicality. If he doesn't want roommates cold booting his PC he can put a BIOS lock on or install a lock on his case if he thinks they're gonna pull his HDD out of his system just to fuck with him.
