Hello, /g/. Hoping you can offer some advice. Looking for some good quality headphones, mostly for gaming, music, podcasts at night so as not to bother my neighbors.

Could you GUY'S help?

Budget - My budget is 100-140 Eur (never more than that, ofc if there is a model that is way better I can wait a bit and get 10 more Eur but that's it

Location - I live in Portugal (Europe) so Amazon is fine

Source - phone and PC, planning to buy a USB sound interface, i am a musician and I want to do tracking and mastering.

Preferred type of headphone - full-sized closed.

Comfort level - as long as they stand in place around my ears and not over them, and they don't hurt I am fine.

Preferred tonal balance - I would like them the flattest I can get. I can use my EQ if I want to spice the bass up. I do like a bit of bass, keep that in mind if there isn't a good pair with a flat tonal balance.

Past headphones (Skip if you're lazy) - some gamecom meme gaming headphones that cost me 30eur

I have 'em. They're kinda junky but for 19 euros there are no other open back even remotely full size headphones that I know of, or headphones that sound better of any type that I've tried. They're also the lightest full-size headphones I've ever had so that's nice. I have made a minimum-effort convolver impulse response file for 'em at https://dl.dropboxusercontent com/u/575062/ma100_IR.wav which will improve the sound somewhat.

The only caveat is, is the opportunity cost of getting these not getting better more expensive headphones? They sound nowhere near as good as any of the full size headphones I actually use, all of which originally cost at least 5 times more than what you'd be paying for these.

Aren't you the faggot with the JBL monitors? You won't get much of an improvement from upgrading. Do you have room treatment? I've got the KH120 but I only got them because it's front ported and quite flat. Even if you flip a coin and upgrade, both are excellent.

Out of curiosity why are you considering the Genelec over the KH120?

Look better, better distortion characteristics (possibly due to the size), lower power consumption

I don't really have the opportunity to compare the two as the local shop only has them available through order.
>>
>>56456875
I have to say I dislike the looks of the stands but I really needed them and there weren't many options for the M040s. The old foam pads I had were worn out and I couldn't position the loudspeakers properly with them. I like to think that with these monitors being bottom ported, the extra space underneath could have some benefit. Also less desk bounce now that they are lifted up and aimed properly.

The M040s lack maximum SPL but that hardly matters when I'm sitting a meter a way from them. There is a faint hiss from the class D amps inside but I can't hear it unless I turn my PC off. Bass extension could be better too I guess but it's still good. For the price these go for, they are really nice loudspeakers. I'd tackle on bass in nearfield by other means than better loudspeakers anyway.

>>56456873
Evos are very bassy and have equally poor build to most other Superlux headphones. Really tiny earpads, too. I can't recommend them much as the standard HD-681s are considerably better sounding, imo.

>>56456986
I've been very happy with these. No thoughts about "upgrading".

Take it with a grain of salt I guess but according to Genelec the port is designed to work fine with either a stand like the IsoAcoustics or on a flat surface, they even make their own foam pads with a metal plate on top specifically for their M030/M040.
>>
>>56457066
>Fiio E10K
In that price range... maybe a SMSL M3 but it's not portable. A Dragonfly Black if you need something ultra portable.
>>
>>56457093
>they even make their own foam pads with a metal plate on top specifically for their M030/M040.
Yeah I noticed that when researching for stand options. The port design is really unconventional on these and I couldn't really say what is for the best here.

The only gaymen I do is CSGO once in a blue moon or some other degenerate shit when I get asked, but two 2160p displays are almost too much, I think I could just as easily get away with 1 1/2 monitor space with the more compact form of an ultrawide for desk space.

I "downgraded" from my dual monitor setup to this one which matches in resolution to the larger display I previously had. I'm not missing the extra desktop space for one bit really. I got too accustomed to using virtual desktops in W10 on my laptop that it carried over to my dual monitor setup, leaving the second one mostly useless. Sometimes I found myself just using the smaller 1920x1080 alone with the 2560x1440 monitor tucked away.

This does what both of those monitors did but better. High refresh rate, lower input lag and much better color reproduction after calibrating. Also G-Sync™ and the menus are nice. Works for games, photo-editing and other media.. consumption. For photo editing I could do better but I'm not too serious about it so this ends up being a good "compromise".

BF1 is something where I'd likely just enjoy looking at visuals instead of playing and I doubt I can get it looking pretty and at playable frames with my GPU right now. My interest comes and goes. Actually BF1 should have top tier sound design. Might be a reason to test it...

>>56458112
sRGB yes and no, not really. In comparison the saturated screen modes look off once I've been accustomed to sRGB. Some companies offer calibration as a service(often cheaper than getting the tools
yourself) and you'll get pretty much there already by just copying calibrated settings and an ICC profile from tftcentral. Monitors don't show too much variation in manufacturing.

Could you GUY'S help?

Budget - My budget is 100-140 Eur (never more than that, ofc if there is a model that is way better I can wait a bit and get 10 more Eur but that's it

Location - I live in Portugal (Europe) so Amazon from european countries are fine.

Source - phone and PC.

Use - listening to music, gaming and monitoring.

Past headphones - some gamecom meme gaming headphones that cost me 30eur

Thank you in advance

It's to combat the possibility of an output resistor on the headphone out. Non-zero output impedance causes distortion in dynamics and the problem is mitigated by a higher headphone resistance.

Answer went unanswered last thread. As I said.
I've owned the Koss Porta Pros for about a year.

Why is it that the Koss KSC75's that I got today not sound the same? Porta Pros are more bassy and I expected the KSC75's to be the same too.

Will burn-in make KSC75's bassier exactly like my Porta Pro? It sounds too normal like a Earpod and not bassy.

Never heard ED-1 but don't like Lambda's stock signature, too recessed in the upper midrange and a bit too prominent around 10kHz.

Yeah, but they sound crystal clear and fatigue free. Long listening is possible but Tyll's graphs don't show you that. Stax buyers, not casual meet listeners, can tell you what the average dynamic sounds like when after a spell of absence: muffled, AND sharp.

I mean, you can machete their sound quality with EQ if you insist on loud edm.
>>
>>56462274
Funny because I found STAX muffled while I found common dynamics like K701, DT880 and HD600/HD650 to sound clearer. Upper midrange is the region the ear is most sensitive to after all.

Maybe those STAX buyers got accustomed to the STAX signature.

I regularly listen to decent speakers with decent treatment, I can hear the faults on dynamic headphones, even ones that are more neutral like HD600 (dip in the treble).

STAX just sound more problematic to me.

>more neutral
Define neutral. If you start with the simple assumption of a flat amplitude response in audio frequencies, you ignore critical concerns:

>Physical
Acoustic waves lend themselves to description with associated variables of time and space. Frequency can be seen as related to time under the usual Fourier transform, but this does not account for space. To define the transfer response, we need to define a specific angle or even a range of incidence to the listener.

>Signal processing
The brain is very clever, cleverer than the reading of an FR chart at least. Subjects display a remarkable ability to extract similar timbral features even when subject to gross distortions from the outer ear as we introduce spatial features. We can devise mathematical methods in which the frequency spectrum would be different and construct a model to behave in a representative way.
To give a specific example: using ITD/ILD/spectral notches to identify a sound source location by cross-correlating it to the reference acoustic model, and stripping out associated tonal distortions.

>Cognition
The senses are closely linked and related to each other even for a non-synesthete, multiple senses are used at once to identify and qualify stimuli. This can also be very devious for audio examinations because the brain will automatically make these associations using the other senses, consciously or not; what the subject knows, or thinks it knows, will be a part in how the other sensory information is utilized. Things like showing a color photo can affect subjective reports of loudness and timbre, while the same sound is played back.
The brain exhibits plasticity with the data it is given, and it can use the other senses to adjust what it interprets from the ear. What other sounds would they have listened to and consider neutral? What would have they been told to consider neutral?

Can I connect these to my Philips X2 or do I want some real thick ass cables? Do they make a difference for headphones?

I know for speakers there are various gauges and you want the thick stuff. Anyone know for headphones?

Cheers

I dunno many in the price range but I have some qy8s and have compared to my sisters jaybird x2s and they are v nice sounding, V profile, I prefer the jaybirds more flatter profile but yes the qy8s at 20 bux are excellent buying

>Yamaha EPH-100
amazing sound, great price/performance, but the reliability sucks, there's a 2 year warranty but it's a hassle to have to send them back and wait for the replacement, mine just failed on one side and it's the second time in a year this happened
>>
I think my headphone just died.
Stereo audio sounds like an underwater recording. Mono audio works fine. When I play audio over one speaker, both will play. It doesn't matter if I choose the left or right speaker.
The external wire looks fine, so my guess is the internal wire is broken.
It's not a big deal though. I absolutely hate these headphones (Bose AE2), but it sucks to spend money.

Anyone here own a Mod Mic? I think I got fucked in the ass by buying this mic. Mod Mic shills got me. You won. The plastic magnet broke loose.

They don't sell the attachment. Look closer in the link.

Do I have to buy a new mic? What the freaking fuck..

I'll try using bonding glue on it. Fucking hell this is a fucking expensive mic.

Is there a specific brand or are they all the same? This one seems to be unbranded and is only $12.

those cables are fine
speakers only need larger cables if they need a fug ton of power
even still its pretty 'meme tier'

cables only mean shit if they're straight up bad
as in massive interference of blown out interference

which is rare these days

also, for Ali links you don't need the crap after the >.html

There are basically two external, non-portable DACs worth considering: the ODAC, or the Behringer UCA202.

Nah. Try to get a refurbished ATH M50X off Amazon/Ebay or something. I saw a few days ago they were going for $99.
>>
>>56463372
>>56466264
Don't get m50X
m40x are better anyways
either way, you might wanna look at Takstar hi 2050 if you want a nice warm open sound
the AKGs are good too, but just pricier.

>JBL LSR305 are pretty much the best speakers/monitors I can get unless I want to spend $1000+ right?
No. The best monitor would be either the Tannoy Reveal 802 (front-ported) or the Yamaha HS 8 (rear-ported)
>Schiit Modi 2 is pretty much the best DAC I can get unless I want to buy into head-fi/reddit tier audiophile snake oil memes right?
No. If you're buying a new computer in this period, every new mobo (even the cheapest ones) has good pre-built soundcard. My new pc has a Asus H110 m-k mobo which has a Realtek ALC 887, which is pretty good for every monitor speaker. I connect my Indiana Line 2.1 Mio Kit to the rear speeaker/headphone port and it sounds great. DACs are something you want to invest into ONLY IF your current DAC gives off background noises or it has any mechanical problem. Expensive DACs don't improve the sound quality. Even if you wanted an external DAC, Schiit Modi 2 is already snakeoil. Get a cheap Fiio E10K.
>>
Thanks for all the help you guys gave me this past week, I'm really having fun with my AKG702 and fiio 10k

Depends if you want open or closed. If closed go with the NVX XPT100. If open SHP9500.

>>56459727
Hyper X Cloud 2 if you want an attached mic and surround sound. There's also the Sennheiser Game One/Zero but it's open as in other people may be able to hear what you are listening to if they are somewhat close.

Better headphones tend not to have surround sound as it tends to degrade the overall quality of the sound.

I see, do you think it would be worth it for me to save and get the HS8s? I like to look of them but they're like 2x the price of the 305s

I currently have some HD600s, and excuse my poor knowledge of speakers but does the image control waveguide on the JBLs mean it has better soundstage and imaging than the Yamahas? Or will the HS8s be better/same? Or is it just a meme?
>>
>>56467242
It's on the bassy side. It's also a fair bit larger than most other small closed headphone suggestions you see around here, better for comfort.
Few people ask about closed headphones in that price range, but it's an option worth considering.

Shure SRH1540 has replacement earpads.

>>56469556
You want to have a filter to prevent dirt and earwax from falling inside and getting stuck in some place nasty, like in the driver. On the other hand, the mismatch is undesirable.
If you want to experiment, play around with some finely woven fabric to use as a replacement, silk sheets, handkerchiefs and so on as a replacement filter material.
>>
>>56470697

I don't think I can do that without ruining the sound even more.
I've already removed the other one, and now they seem to be symmetrical. Only louder and brighter.
I think I'll live with them until I can afford to buy something else.
Thanks anyway.
