Have a pi2 I loaded retroarch on for my daughter (age 6) to play around on. She loves it, and has really gotten into playing Pokemon Leaf Green on it.

Have a Pi1 Model B+ that I'm currently using as a iTunes streaming box in my workshop.

Have a Pi Zero that I literally have no use for. Had OSMC loaded on it until it stopped working for no apparent reason. Have thought about the Radio Throwee project I've seen tossed around, but there's also this I thought about doing for fun:

http://www.instructables.com/id/20-Portable-Raspberry-Pi-Game-Console/

Rpis aren't bad for hobby project boards, and they've a huge community following. Just don't overload them-they're designed to do one thing. Also, media projects are probably a bust.

I connected mine to a thermal imaging camera and mechanical arm. Once the pi detects heat over 24°c, it will trigger the arm to press down on a buzzer. The buzzer will then alert me of the shift in temperature, allowing me to quickly re-adjust the thermostat in my apartment. Therefore ensuring, I'll always stay nice a cool. It works great, but unfortunately there is a bug when the temperature reaches below 19°c, the pi reads it as if it's 44°c... Causing the mechanical arm to enter an uncontrollable fit which can only be stopped by a hard system reset. But, luckily that doesn't happen all that often.

That is hilarious. And a good use of a pi too.

I use mine as a personal Git server, and, when neccessary, a public Git server too. Hosted on a Raspberry Pi Zero using Gogs.

You can use them as gadgets too, such as HID mice, keyboards, webcams, midi input etc.
I just hook mine up as ethernet, and I only need one microUSB cable. On the machine, I share the machine's internet connection.

When at home, plug in ethernet and power it on. Accessible to every machine in the house.

I use my pi to send serial USB commands to my arduino-controlled homebrew CNC. The CNC is shit because I handbuilt it all, but the electronics works like a dream and I don't have to use autistic G-code, I can just use my own image-to-instructions python program, then send all the instructions via serial python. Probably saved myself a few hundred choosing to write my own programs and use a pi + arduino, rather than buy real stuff.

Trying to make it into an emulation machine, but the three main OS's for this have an integral flaw
Recalbox just doesn't want to recognize PS3 controllers properly
RetroPie has numerous issues that I might be able to work out if I dedicated a lot of time into doing so
Lakka is the best of the bunch since it's the most streamlined, but it uses that trash system of only scanning and adding ROMs verified by the database. On top of that, some N64 games like Mario Party 3 will have no video on Glide64 unless I turn on full FPS, to which it then flickers to hell and back

My plan was to make about 10-20 MEGA accounts (500GB~1TB of storage), mount them all with MegaFuse, mount encrypted EncFS folders within each, and finally chain it all together in one easily writable location with unionfs-fuse.

This to provide storage for automated downloading using sabnzbd, sickrage and couchpotato -- downloading locally and then uploading them into my MEGA cluster, and finally sharing it all via samba and NFS for network playback.

The dream ended early when I realized EncFS won't work with it.

That would be neat as fuck.

Also, turn the disc tray in to a little drawer for memory cards and sticks, pens, pencils, etc.
Most small writing utensils should fit fine in a disc space. Maybe even a little square notepad.

I remember seeing a disc drive space being turned in to a drawer a while back.
The person that did it had installed a... card reader internally I think it was, some spare slot.
Then just removed the drive entirely and gutted it for the opening mechanism.

Shit dude, nice idea.
I was wondering how the fuck you managed it until I googled it and seen it was a hardware-specific thing.

I wonder if there would be an easy way to do it with any laptop though.
In reality, it is just trying to figure out how the display operates, what keyboard grid you have and what hyper exotic touchpad you have that nobody in existence has ever heard about seemingly.
Touchpads are fucking awful man. Barely any fucking standards at all with the damn things.

Will an OrangePi work better as a DNS server? Or is the RaspPi 3 good enough?

I originally got it as a way to make the TV left in our apartment an entertainment center for movies, shows, and games for myself and my roommates, but none of them showed any interest to use it and used their laptops instead. I've taken it out of the living room since. I now have it as a torrentbox with samba.

I'd do something else with it, but I can't think of any projects I can use it for that would benefit me. I should install pi-hole to it to stop ads and other shit.

Planning to use it as a PiHole + comfy bedroom retro console
