They're more of a fashion statement than a useful tool.

You buy them because they look good and carry status, therefore the owner looks good and carries status. Apple knows this and that's why they charge exorbitant prices and don't give a flying fuck to technicalities. It is the same marketing strategy of any other fashion brand.

Also the fact that a lot of courses put them down as "required", when really any laptop would work just fine

Surely you can imagine many use cases where this thing would run at 100% CPU for many minutes or even hours.

If the cooling solution cannot maintain that, then the design is faulty. Thermal throttling as a cooling solution is simply bad design.

I'm waiting for the refresh of the MacBook Air (rumors say it's coming this year) to decide if I get the Retina one or not (or maybe I'll stick with my 2010 MacBook Air). I don't *want* to spend almost €1500 on a laptop, but I need the portability. If it was €200 cheaper I'd already bought it.
>>
>>56437120
Games, rendering of small videos?

At launch date you might think "there's nothing I would want to run in this device that would max it for hours", but then two or three years later, at the end of it's (short) lifecycle, opening ten tabs with shitty javascript now causes the thing to heat to boiling temperatures.

Am I crazy to think that designing proper cooling of a microprocessor is an integral part of making computers?

Probably, but it's a tradeoff we're willing to make to get more portability. Law of physics apply here and it's impossible to get a desktop-level cooling system on a much more portable machine. If that's not your thing then buy an Alienware gaming laptop or a desktop and leave us alone.

Imagine a giant cock flying towards your mouth, and there's nothing you can do about it. And you're like "Oh man, I'm gonna have to suck this thing", and you brace yourself to suck this giant cock. But then, at the last moment, it changes trajectory and hits you in the eye. You think to yourself "Well, at least I got that out of the way", but the the giant cock rears back and stabs your eye again, and again, and again. Eventually, this giant cock is penetrating your gray matter, and you begin to lose control of your motor skills. That's when the giant cock slaps you across the cheek, causing you to fall out of your chair. Unable to move and at your most vulnerable, the giant cock finally lodges itself in your anus, where it rests uncomfortably for 4, maybe 5 hours. That's what using Mac OS X is like.

>>
>>56436708
I've been enjoying this since 2012. I use a HP sleekbook with an AMD APU, most of the time it doesn't turn on the fan because it runs at ~40 degrees web browsing without it. Good to know that Apple can now compare themselves to HP in terms of cooling which is quite an achievement as HP is legendary on that front.

>>
>>56441514
>coilwhine from the mobo or the vga or the psu,
Nah, I excluded those, the sound, being high-pitched (around 12~14khz) is very directional, so by putting a smal cloth in top of individual components I could trace the sound origin to the region around the CPU. Well, could the power phases, but there is no coil in that region, The pitch also changes according to the CPU frequency. So it's likely the CPU itself.

High current can create vibration and high pitched sound fairly easy, is not as uncommon as you think.

I also have a Thinkpad 8 with an Atom CPU in it. If I put the back of the table close to my ear, I can also hear some chirping noise coming from it. Cant hear from my smartphone, tough.

Same here, early 2000s, running Sierra beta, the only money I've ever spent on it after the initial purchase was to upgrade the ram from 4 to 8GB. It's baffling how heavy an OS macOS is. The CPU seems to hold its own weight pretty well though.

Keep in mind I'm actually running a VM, a browser and a bunch of shit on pic related.

It's my job, unfortunately.

Worse regex options in stuff like grep and sed that made re-write a bunch of scripts using complete awkward patterns knowing if I was using Linux it would have been done better and 2 hours ago. find command forces you to do dumb escapes for the --exec flag, which would frankly just be stupid except its not on any of the documentation.

>>
>>56443554
I am saying that. I don't see a point to having a mobile device that pulls that much power. At that point you're going to be tethered to the wall anyway so what's the point? This is why I have a server and desktop to do the hard work. This is all assuming of course that in your life you don't have a need for a mobile workstation meaning essentially a desktop that needs to be moved from place to place but I don't think that situation fits most people.

It probably won't as long as hardware acceleration is being used. Video is only really stressful when CPU-only software decoding is forced. One instance of this is Chrome which will force VP8/VP9 when it can, heating up your laptop and draining your battery because there's no VP8/VP9 acceleration support.

In short, stick to H264 and you probably won't have heat or battery issues.
>>
>>56443693
>Pretty much anyone with a job in non-web development.
I'm assuming by this you exclusively mean professional programmers which still doesn't even make sense outside of a monetary issue. If you're a poor-ish college student in need of a computer to do all of your work and still be able to move it around then I get it (hence my disclaimer comment). However if you need processing power and are a professional with computing power why wouldn't you just use a server or a desktop for computing power? You can a very light, cool operating, device with battery longevity and still be able to compile things on your non-mobile device. It makes even more sense just do use a vm on a server to compile things because you can allocate computing power as you need it and it won't have to be in your lap.

The MacBook Air has a fan, it's always had a fan.

I own one and it is effectively silent. The ambient noise in a room is almost always louder than the fan when in use. I can use a program to turn the RPM up to 6500 and then it's audible. Even then the frequency isn't unpleasantly high. And it rarely ever needs max RPM under normal use.

I don't find the gains to be worth the loss. Again, my laptop gets me through a day with plenty of battery left and it's light enough that I can carry it open with one hand. Is this a fully passive thread or a macbook bread?

Because there is a space for fully passive small laptops I feel. Within there it's atom tier shit chips and coreM for lap heaters which still act like computers.

After putting a proper copper shim in my Chinese coreM tablet it ran 10deg cooler and then I undervolted it , rarely throttles during the intel utility stress test, prime obviously hurts it but it never went all the way back down to 800mhz.

On the otherhand macbooks are a nice balance of features but remain overpriced.

Hardware (not including the flimsy keyboard cover) is good for the price, but not upgradeable or user serviceable. When two of my surfaces broke down I had no choice but to send my devices to MS. With a normal laptop I could've gotten the m2 ssd or 2.5" sata ssd out of the machine and gotten my data back. I stored all my important data on my home server but still I was kinda fucked as I wouldn't have wanted to send my company's data to MS.
