current project: put a soundblaster awe64 in my unisys cwd and replaced cpu with a trinityworks powerstacker (amd am5x86) kit, oveclocked to 160mhz. the powerstacker is a bit taller, so I cut a hole in the hard drive mounting bracket with tin snips (will clean it up with a dremel later). the old hd won't fit in the case now, so I intend to replace it with a cf card adapter. that, some more ram, and i'll have a pretty nice dos mini system

Been considering picking up one of the pre-MDD Powermac G4s since they can be had for cheap

PC100/133 memory makes me wary though, it'd be nice to be able to run OS X 10.4 or 10.5 without being sluggish
>>
Is a G4 mac worth it for €15? Will any old monitor work with it?
>>
>>56443301
10.4 itself is okay on an SDRAM system but surfing the web with JS on requires patience

>>56443489
pretty much pocket change, go for it
they'll take any shit peripherals you can throw at them
>>
>>56438571
Are we talking about the look or the functions?
>>
>>56443301
I wouldn't even put 10.5 on a G4 unless you had more than 1GB of RAM 1GHz+ CPU. I don't think the G4's have SATA either, although I could be wrong. You can buy a SATA controller, but you would have to make sure it's supported.
>>
>>56444134
even then 10.5 is kind of useless on PPC unless you're really in to the UI enhancements, you lose classic compatibility, performance potential even on newer systems, and don't really gain much in support or anything else since most stuff that supports PPC at all supports 10.4 anyway
>>
Any good retrocomputing IRCs?
>>
>>56444134
>>56444193
My attraction to 10.5 is that it's the oldest reasonably supportable OS X version for app development. There's a number of APIs and quality of life improvements in 10.5 that are hard to give up. I guess I could go back a version further but that makes it harder to make sure everything looks and acts right all the way from the minimum supported version of OS X up to 10.12, whereas if you're targeting 10.5 it's somewhat easier.
>>
I've been considering getting one of these 8-bit kit computers but I am not confident in my soldering ability. Never soldered anything with ICs before.

http://rc2014.co.uk/
>>
>>56444420
You can get a C2D iMac that supports the latest version of OS X for less $250-$4050 and you can upgrade the RAM and HDD. It also will have a very nice IPS screen.

Probably the cheapest way to do iOS/OS X development.
>>
>>56444547
oops that should say "$250-450"
>>
>>56444547
I have a 2015 15" rMBP w/dedicated graphics. Access to a Mac isn't the issue; I have an old (12+ years) project that I'm modernizing and I'm trying to gracefully drop support for older versions (and PPC) not dropping any version unless I really have to. It's a simple program and there's no reason for it to require anything near the latest OS.

The tower would be used for testing and development on 10.4/10.5 and PPC. For old versions of x86 OS X I can just spin up a VM (doing this with 10.5 x86 right now).

It's a Sony Vaio Sony PCG-171N (PCG-GT3/K). It's a UMPC with a build in camera which can either record video and photo up to 640x480 at max resolution. Only Japan release so, you can't get this UMPC in North America when it release. Very limited info but more info spec of this Vaio is on the link below.

http://www.sony.jp/products/Consumer/PCOM/PCG-GT3K/index.html

For a 2000 UMPC laptop, it's an interesting idea to have a camera build into the small laptop to take pics or even film people during your trip if you take with you.

Found this website where this guy has been selling Altair 8800 kits that are as true as possible to the originals, so you solder your own PC. Even comes with cases made by the original manufacturers.

The Altair 8800 is considered to be one of the first microcomputers for home use. Been thinking about getting one

They're supposed to be that way. There are several other computers from the same age and region with a similar layout. Several other computers from the same region have a different keyboard layout but still have the diagonal arrow key and two down arrow keys, sometimes with extra markings on one of them. My bet is that the diagonal key is something corresponding to our "home key", and the left down arrow is a type of pager.

Can't really fault him if it's his only legacy DD, NT4 is good on stability and "muh enterprise feeling" but the shit games compatibility can be annoying at times and the primary benefits of 2K are kind of lost on hardware of that vintage.

98 is alright if you aren't expecting to be using your system for anything super-heavy for multiple hours at a time.

Hey guys, could really use some help right about now.

I have no clue how to get the serial Microsoft Mouse 2.0A working with DOS, nor do I know if it even works in the first place, because I have no other computers with a serial port to test it.

That's the problem I'm running into, I guess. The computer already has cutemouse 1.90 alpha installed, but I don't see any directories or files for it, and typing 'CTMOUSE' runs it, but I don't think it's configured correctly?

I'm tempted to start with a fresh install of DOS 6.22, but that might make things even harder.
>>
>>56493988
There's not much to configure, you run CTMOUSE and it will load the driver for either COM port or PS/2, depending what kind of mouse you have connected to where.

There's a switch to force COM or PS/2, what else do you need? Just copy CTMOUSE.EXE (just that one file is all you need) to C:\DOS and add CTMOUSE.EXE to Autoexec.bat and you're set.
