so i'm trying to be employed after i graduate from college, and i chose to do cs -> tech over economics -> finance, biology -> medicine, history -> law, and engineering because it seemed at least marginally creative and art-related (which is what i actually want to do but where the jobs at nam sayin... but of course it gets hella depressing and difficult too.
so what are some way cool things that programming can do? what do you think people don't appreciate enough about computer science? why do you like it?
when your code is running on a machine, you have it by its balls. you can literally bring it to its knees with a few lines, or you can make your users happy.
for me, it's all about the power trip you get

>why do you like it?
I get lots of money doing it. No other particular reason why I would like it any more than any other typical office job.

At first I got into it as a teen because I wanted to be an edgy hacker. I started programming and fooled around with publically available keyloggers/RATS and soon learned that I couldn't much unless I devoted myself and became very good, this discouraged me, but then it gave me inspiration to work toward it because I realized only those who work toward it get very good.
i like order and discipline, and the machine works exactly as i expect it

There are little to no costs involved. You don't need to invest in materials, equipment, space, etc. like in traditional engineering. Most libraries are open source, most tools are open source, and there are tons of free resources out there to make whatever you want.
