Newish to /g/, I'm fairly good with computers but not networking. I live in a Victorian house, brick walls about 9 inches thick so WiFi signal is not particularly good. I am looking to extend my wireless range throughout the flat but I want a SINGLE wireless network SSID that I can connect to throughout the entire flat.

If I went and got a second router, and I can connect it to my current one via an ethernet cable, how would I go about doing this?

I am basically looking for the kind of thing they have in large open areas like airports or offices where they have one network, but with loads of access points acting as repeaters.

Pic is basically my current setup.

Use the same encryption/SSID/password. Put them in the same subnet if you want it to be the same network(so 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 as router ips and above that use for DHCP)

It's easy.

you dont even need to do this, though you will get better quality internet using wired connection.

You can just set the router up as a repeater, that will just rebroadcast your SSID and shit with the same signal.

I get my full 150Mbps when the signal is good on 5GHz but it drops quickly to maybe 50Mbps or even 10 if I am far enough away.

I use a Netgear D6400 and am willing to change should I need to.

Set one of the routers in Access Point / Bridging mode.

At the risk of sounding retarded... how? All the tutorials I found just create ANOTHER SSID that you can connect to when you need it.

Do I need to do ANYTHING else at all? Or do I just need a router that supports that?

"Put them in the same subnet"
How do I do this? Sorry, Im new to networks and their meanings of words

Much appreciated, I thought this would just make a separate wireless network that you connect to when you needed it, or is that not the case?

bridge mode

This. I've done this exact thing at home with my old router. Works like a charm.

The best option is to just have your other router in bridge mode with the same SSID, but it also depends on the vendor. Keep in mind if it all keeps the same SSID, you may fall into issues of sticky roaming (when it doesn't switch AP's when it should). Good luck with the brick, that stuff kills RF, absorbs 15/16's of the signal or something like that just on 2.4 alone. Worse for 5 GHz.
