i know some basic python from a cs101 course at my uni, and my class this semester on algos requires java.

the oracle documentation my profs told us to read isn't making much sense to me -- i think because it's too theoretical and ends up being dry as fuck. i'd rather be programming things and learning from my mistakes to discover all the tricks and shit that java has to offer.

What exactly do you and don't you understand?

If you know python, then learning Java if statements, loops, functions, whatever should be easy. The biggest difference to you would be that Java is always object oriented. Even the main function is an object.

more like object disoriented

we're supposed to get this kind of stuff less than a week in: https://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/java/javaOO/constructors.html

with no understanding of the syntax or anything, so i'm feeling rather fucked -- like what is public? what's the difference between a field and a variable?

or what is an object? the whole ontologies of objects, variables, and methods confuses the shit outta me. they say it's like objects in the real world... except we can't actually apprehend objects for what they are in the real world, only what our senses tell us about them (ie, our notions of these objects like plato's forms or some shit)... so it's kind of a shit analogy to me... or some philosophical nuances that make it inconsistent to me.

all this talk about what objects and classes are is really frustrating, and i'd rather just fucking code shit to get a feeling for these things instead. and maybe put names and theory to it AFTER the fact

Then do it. Download eclipse or whatever and take a crack at it. But when it comes to OOP no amount of tinkering is going to make you understand how to use it or what it's purpose is.

Public means it's not private. It's an OOP principle. I could explain it, but you'd rather just get a feel for it
