My motherboard died on my old computer
Looking for a middle of the road build, and got this from Logical Increments

CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor
Motherboard: Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 BOM ATX AM3+ Motherboard
Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: Asus Radeon R9 380 4GB Video Card
Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 ATX Mid Tower Case
It all comes out to around $494.24 on newegg. How's it look?

I should be able to reuse my Corsair HX650w series as the power supply for this build right? PCparts builder says that this build should come to around 384w and 650w should be plenty.
Also, I forgot to get a wireless adapter on my previous build so I had to use a UBS wifi adapter. It seems to work pretty fine. Should I just stick with that or should I look into getting a more complex wifi adapter?

Hey nigs, need a hand. I'm taking apart my brothers old PC to try and figure out what I can use for my new one. Most of the parts arrive on Tuesday.

I got the GPU out no problem, but the PSU, HDD and CD Drive are being pains in the ass. They each have a single screw that's fucking me over. It's as tight as a nuns arse.

I just sprayed them with WD40 and waited ten minutes, but not much is budging. Help?

>FX-6300
There is no need to go for one of these CPUs any longer. An i3-6100 is slightly worse at multi-threaded performance and significantly better at single-threaded performance. An H110 motherboard can be had for less than the price of a 970X AM3+ motherboard these days, as well.

Normally I'd say that you lose a lot and pay more for an ITX board, but H81/H110 seems made to be for the form factor.
However, why are you using a DDR3L board with a DDR3 RAM? Play it safe and choose the DDR4 variant of the same board and a DDR4-2133 RAM for the same price.

Also, it says under compatibility
MSI H110M Gaming Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard has an onboard USB 3.0 header, but the Cooler Master HAF 912 ATX Mid Tower Case does not have front panel USB 3.0 ports.

The Cooler Master HAF 912 ATX Mid Tower Case supports video cards up to 390mm long, but video cards over 270mm may block drive bays. Since the Asus Radeon R9 380 4GB Video Card is 271mm long, some drive bays may not be usable.

1060 or 480, whichever you prefer. I'm assuming you don't use both monitors for gaming. Since you seem to like keeping parts as long as possible, go for the 480. This is assuming AMD keeps up their current trend of improved performance with driver updates.

looks like a ghetto case. might want to double czech.

unless there's some feature you need you can get a 10-20$ cheaper board.

PSU is a little overkill. 500W would be fine.

Sure you don't want AC wireless?

>>56430054
too lazy to link but there are boards 10-20$ cheaper that would work with everything you have there (assuming you haven't picked that board for some additional feature not listed)

the case looks bad. check reviews.
>>
>>56430072
in particular, why ATX? Do you need the extra space?

The mATX boards and cases are a little cheaper, plus your case will be less bulky
>>
>>56430011

No point paying the Z170 overclock tax if you're not going to use it. However, buy an unlocked CPU for better stock speeds and way better resale value down the line, but only if you already have a cooler or you'll spend the profit on one.

The best is probably more than you need to pay for. At 500GB you're pretty safe with any budget-tier SSD since lifetime relates to size.

e.g. for the price of an M.2 Intel/Samsung "Pro" SSD you could buy 2 SATA Crucial SSDs and RAID them for piece of mind if you think one will just stop working one day.

> Use existing 840 SSD (256gb)
> Downgrade CPU to i5

>DDR4 32gb -> 16gb and decreased Mhz (DDR4 3600 -> ~3000)
> find out minimum power requirements for 1060 or 1070 and downgrade PSU

Also is this worth biting on, will it hit around this price again? Or should i just start looking at i5 prices?

I would like to, but i dont have a whole lot of experience with it. Though i mean the CPU cooler is around 20-30, im not saving a bunch by not getting it, and thought that thermal take was a good choice for it.
how much should i drop the mobo? $50? theres another asus board around that price, but i dont want to skimp on the board too much 200 sounded ok, but i sqeeze some more on it. what really hurts is the DDR4 memory prices. is 2133 the best for decent prices without taking too much a hit on performance?

2133mhz is stock ddr4 speeds, higher than that and you'd need an overclocking mobo, which is fine, a Z170 motherboard and I5 6600k with 3000mhz ram is a good overclockable setup, but a H170 board with a i5/i7 6600/6700 and 2133mhz ddr4 would be awesome too and cheaper
>>

Im currently waiting on a i7 6700 non-k that im paying $310 where I live. I would give my left nut to get a sub $300 i7 6700k. Get this shit yo

I would never downgrade to the 1060 also, man.

Only change the board to ddr3 if you really, really, really need money to get the rest. But anyway, get a $100 Gigabyte Z170 DDR4, its the same shit if youre not going to SLI.

Put 16gb ddr4 at 3000mhz, its more than ok to play anything on 4k. Dont use G.Skill and get the Corsair LPX, its cheaper.

As I said 600w is more than enough to either 1060 or 1070.

Click on "Add to comparison list" on both pages.

Both have PCIe 3.0 on x16, so thats really what matters to see if a H110M is good or bad. The bad ones are 2.0.

>DVI-D
If your going to get a video card a DVI port on the mobo really doesnt matter.

Get the cheaper one. (I would recommend a B150 or a H170 if you can, for more HD slots, RAM slots, etc., but if you can you wont lose anything really vital either way)
>>
>>56432600
It's not letting me add both to compare. I've tried already ;-;

For my needs a DVI is irrelevant, but for some reason the cheaper one includes it.

I also don't think I need the extra slots. I'll be using a PCIe AC wireless card, a 480 gfx, and max 3 HDDs/SDDs. I think this mobo will suffice.

You could save some money going for the 6500/6400, theyre pretty similar.

I would get the XFX GTR 480 or the Nitro+ OC for better clock performance. Asus Strix may be good also but i dont know. Im not really familiar with the Gigabyte one.

RAM is nice.

Western Digital HDD may be cheaper but im not sure. If youre on budget you could save getting a 120 SSD instead.

600w its pretty good for the config.

Only cpus ending in "k" can be overclocked.

You can kinda "brute force" overclock this one with only a Z170 on paper, but you will end up fucking up and disabling some shit unless you get a proper 6600K/6700K cpu for overclocking.

You dont really NEED it, the standard 6600 is pretty good enough with a 480.

Features (SLI support, DDR4 RAM support, more HD ports, more RAM slots, cpu overclock). Mobos have no effect on performance.

If youre not going to SLI/crossfire, get a Z170 by $90-$110. If youre not going overclock get a cheap B150/H110/H170. Always get a DDR4 board if youre going with a Skylake CPU, unless youre really on budget.

Thats pretty much it

If your going to get B150/H110/H170M always check the details if your mobo supports PCI 3.0/2.0 x16 instead of only 2.0. Nowadays pratically every board supports it, but its better to be sure (specially on H110 boards).

H110 tend to have only 2 RAM slots also. B150 and H170 supports 4.

anybody have 2 full towers plugged into 1 outlet?

power calculators put both at about 500 watts each under worst case full utilization. i also have 4 monitors on the same outlet. 1st (current) PC will be torrenting/workstation. 2nd PC will be gayming rig. i'm "retiring" the first PC because it's about 5 years old now; the benchmarks i'm seeing put skylake and it's DDR4 at a significant advantage.

it will be highly unlikely that both PCs will be running at 100%. i will have one on sleep mode while i work/game on the other. i might game and torrent on both but it's such a low level of power draw that i think it should be fine. google tells me house circuits should be OK for about 1800 watts.

The i7 deal wasn't too rare, and resurfaced on amazon, though... tax more than likely. Going to crash now, probally should have slept about 4 hours ago, but its been fun.

I haven't done extensive digging, just whats listed on Partpicker. the EVGA 1070 that i viewed had one one egg review (not really a good one, he just whined about the back part of the shroud not designed in,but I didnt inspire confidence). The Asus Turbo had about ~10+ Reviews, evga could have been fine for all i know, but tried and tested. The price difference wasn't much.

Hm, maybe I should have done more digging before posting a new thread.
Regardless, if anyone could help me out with this, I'd be very grateful.

Building my first desktop from scratch. Going for very low cost as it's only really needed for web-browsing, multimedia and some very light gaming.

Some of the parts I've settled on are off brand so they don't show up on pcpartpicker and such.
Would like to make sure they'll all fit together.

Pls, no bully.

download a torrent for a win 8.1 already registered, then what you do is you go to google and search "win 10 for retarded people" and there's this microsoft program where if you use their assistive technologies on windows, you can STILL get a free win 10 upgrade.

Now because your torrented 8.1 is registered win 10 will be registered too. That's the way I do it.

there's nothing really wrong with it but you can get similar performance for far less:

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/PH6C6X

* the i7 can be swapped to an i5 to save a good chunk of money for minimal performance loss in games. if you're not overclocking then get a locked processor and h110 board to save even more

* smaller cooler, but performs on the same level as the 212 evo. cheap coolers may hold you back if you're really going to push your chip as much as you can. get something bigger like a cryorig h5 or even a dual-tower if so.

* more barebones z170 board. it'll still overclock just fine and has all the ports you need but lacks sli support

* cheaper ram, minor frequency increases aren't worth the 25 extra britbong bux

* much cheaper, larger ssd. sata3 is still damn fast, you'll only really notice a speed difference between it and nvme when handling huge files. for general usage and gaming it's not worth imo

* i'd avoid sli and instead buy a single faster card. issues are still common, and it's a lot more power and heat. dx12/vulkan may change the reliance on shitty drivers but i'd just stick with what works

* cheaper case, comes with four fans

* cheaper, higher quality psu based on seasonic g. 550w is more than enough. review here:

http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=382

hope this helps, just my two cents. i'd take that potential money saved and put it towards a big dick 1440p gsync monitor like the xb271hu.

I got my d15 and ripjaws4 3200mhz 16 kit. Also decided to cheap out and get a 5820k from frys electronics instead of finding a used 5930k. Goal is 4.7, accepting 4.6s. If it makes 4.5 with low voltages but wont do higher I might still keep it. RAM goal is 3400 14/15. SOC champion is in the mail. Should be a pretty sick system to hold me over for a few years til some really cool stuff comes out.

A lot of titles will benefit the 8 threads of the i7. Depend on the game he's playing, but I really think an i7 over an i5 on a gaming pc is worth it.

i think you're right, that's why i left it on the list and stated that the i5 was a good alternative. for gaming the difference is small overall but grows every day as more games start utilizing those extra threads. generally i'd say stick with the i5 until you can fit a big dick gpu like the 1080 in, then move up to the i7 if you've still got the cash for it.

You fucked up by buying an overpriced motherboard that offers you little to nothing over a board that costs 1/2 as much. You also got a 1000w PSU for a computer that will struggle to pull 450w. Finally you got a hyper 212 EVO instead of something like the NH-D15 or similar quality coolers.

7/10, you might have a fine system, but you could've saved enough to buy a monitor with how much you wasted on things that give you zero extra performance.

How can I do cable management on a finish PC I built? Would I remove wiring and such and reorganize it that way?

Is the SSD installed on top of the area where I keep the PSU, or inside the hard drive shelf? I installed it in the hard drive shelf and it works fine.

How can I keep my graphics card from falling, I have an AMD RX 480 and it's a bit bulky and as a result keeps falling from the cartridge it's held on whenever I try to move my PC around.

Ive seen others doing 4.5/4.6 24/7 on air. I dont mind running a little warm or cranking the AC for better ambient on really hot days. I currently run a [email protected] on a worse cooler with slightly less voltage then im expecting and max LLC. Theres more airflow ideas im playing with too. Im pretty sure the chances of getting a chip that can do 4.6 at reasonable voltage isnt too bad. Also I specifically got the 5820k locally so I can return it if its not up to par with my standards.

God /g/, I love you.

So I'm playing vidya, and my PC crashes. Shit. Then I run Speccy (which I haven't done in years), and realize: I don't even have 16GB of RAM. Just 8. And my GTX 580 that's been treating me so well through the years? Video card probably needs an update.

So I say "I gotta go on /g/, maybe they have a PC Building General". And lo and behold, it's the first thread here.

So lads. Thoughts on what RAM and GPU to buy? I'm looking "best-bang-for-your-buck" items on sale, but I'm open to any recommendation. I'm always on my PC, so I'm okay with making a good investment in upgrading it. My Speccy is shown here. My PC is not pre-built. The PSU is 750W.

How's this for a budget? $300 on the GPU.

Ram is ram, get ddr4-2133 if you have a skylake setup on a non-overclockable board/CPU, get ddr4-3000 if it supports it, I don't know what you're using but I assume it only takes ddr3, just get 2 more sticks it really doesn't make a big deal
The best GPU, that's a hard one. The RX480 is probably the best price/performance right now, with the 1060 having a very slim lead. The 1070 is probably the most popular right now and the 1080 is great but not good enough for 4K, so it's not exactly a future 4K card

Hmm. Stick with AMD... or go with trusty Intel?

Decent VR games when?

If there are VR games out there and not just tech demos, I would instantly buy a new system.

I guess it would be the following.

i5 6600k (overclocked to 4,4Ghz)
16Gb DDR4 ram
Z170 mini-ATX
Thermaltake Core V1
Gainward Phoenix GTX1070
550Watt Corsair RM550x
Samsung SSD SM961 256GB, M.2
Of course decent CPU cooler, decent fans too.

But I am not doing it until there are fucking VR games out on the market.
By that all those components will be outdated anyways.
>>
>>56439888
if you can get a cheap i7 4790k then sure i guess, not really worth switching your whole platform.
>>
>>56439845
You don't have to switch. You could grab an FX-83xx or something. And even if you did buy an Intel board, they change sockets every year or so.
>>
>>56439845
Intel makes pointless socket changes every few years
>>
>>56439866
The 1060's got the money-grabbing scam downgrade, the 1070s are just 1070s, this is just an ugly tiny one.
Those 3GB 1060s are like $200 though, obviously not worth it but still low

Do you have programs that take advantage of hyperthreading?
Do you use those programs enough to warrant $100 extra for faster encoding and editing-type shit?
Because without hyperthreading, they're almost the same thing
The 6600 is great but the 6700 has its uses
>>
>>56439888
Skylake is barely better than Haswell, and even according to Intel's marketing material Kaby Lake will only be Skylake with higher clocks. And Zen will be about on par with Broadwell or slightly weaker. So the only reason to switch platform would be if you need more than 4 hyperthreaded cores.
>>
>>56439943
Good. Although the SSD is somewhat questionable. I've seen mixed reviews.
>>
>>56439916
It's micro-ATX or mini-ITX

The Intel 600p m2 drives are cheaper tho

>Intel makes pointless socket changes every few years

Yuck. Well thanks guys. Staying with AMD right now then. Not trying to constantly change boards.

Again, all I want to do at the moment is upgrade my GPU and RAM (well, an anon told me just buying another 8GB of ddr3 to go alongside mine is fine). So yeah, just looking for a GPU upgrade at the moment.

I'll upgrade the CPU and board once Zen comes out. Does this sound fine? Grabbing either an RX480 or a 10-line NVidia, and upgrading the CPU in mid-2017 when Zen hits?

>pointless socket changes
They arent pointless you're just not educated enough in how CPU sockets work

How do you add features without changing the socket? You can add more pins than you need but you have no idea if the features you want to add in 3-4 years would be optimal in that position.

Basically you're too stupid

if you have no idea what pair of ram you got then spend 60 dollars on a 16 gb set, otherwise buy another 8gb of the same set you currently have (as long as you didn't buy it more than 2+ years ago.)

8gb set would be cheaper, and no it really isn't a meme anymore. a lot of games are starting to use a fuckton of memory now.

My current monitor setup is:
Main: 1920x1080
2nd: 1440x900 (don't mind at all. I just use it for Netflix or YT while I'm doing something on main monitor).

If I like this setup and am comfy with it, and don't play too many video games (besides, WoW really), any reason to upgrade to a 1440p monitor? To me, I don't think I'll reap the rewards since I don't do much gaming.
>>
>>56440167
A lot of ITX cases take full sized power supplies, I'm more worried about the single PCIe slot
What do you think? I could get away with an ITX build but mATX has more expandability, fan headers, 2 more ram slots...
>>
>>56440218
8 GB of ram is just now starting to be not enough
>>
>>56435909
You fucked up
Its stupid to SLI in a new build
The only reason to do it is when your GPU cant handle it anymore and you want to get her some more lifetime when the same gpu has already dropped some price. Your basically paying for another 1070 for 20% its performance. Might as well get a 1080.

Ripjaws is overpriced too. Get corsair LPX.

Hi /g/,
I bought 8GB of Ram 4 & half years ago, and all I know is that it was Corsair Vengeance DDR3 (pic related is the box itself which I no longer have). Am I fine in just buying another 8GB of "Corsair Vengeance DDR3", or must I pick a specific one?

It's just that Newegg has so many options, and I don't want to pick a "wrong" one?

Go on speccy and see the frequency of your RAM and multiply it by two.

And also, that comes without saying, but be be sure you have 4 memory lanes on your board instead of 2, to fit all 4 sticks.

>>56440282
Is there ever a good reason to SLI?
Even the price is usually much more than just upgrading/selling your current card
>>
>>56440395

gonna start ordering pieces today if everything looks good. please tell me if I've picked anything shitty

also any case recs for around the same price, but without windows?
>>
>>56440453
No. Just buy the stronger gpu if you can. Many games dont offer good optimization to SLI and you can even get a worse performance than a single gpu depending on the game.

SLI is for overclockers and meme for the average user. By not doing you save money from an overpriced motherboard and the bigger PSU, which you can use to get a 1080 instead.

I can understand SLIing old 700 and 800 gtx gpus, but the 1070 is great and will be great for quite some time. SLIing is throwing money at the garbage bin.

If you can get a second card for cheap, and play mostly games that have SLi support. I mean, something like a 770 can currently be found for about $100 used, and SLi 770 will certainly get higher FPS than any card you'd find for that price(assuming SLi is properly supported, at least). Although 770 is probably a bad example unless you have the 4 GB version.

That the purpose of life is to watch the impossible manifest, to have daydreams become opportunities, to look towards the future and merely accept the present. No, your video card is more than a graphical vessel, it is the goal at the end of your journey that is life. You will never be sated by what you have, to find any meaning you need to accept that nothing that's possible right now is good enough.

In a need for a cheap and reliable Graphics Card

I already got a PC, I just need a new Graphics Card, because my old one doesn't work

My CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 640 3.00 GHz

My motherboard: Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd. M68MT-D3P (Socket M2)

RAM: 4.00GB Single-Channel DDR3 @ 669MHz (9-9-9-24)

PC Case: Thermaltake V3 Black Edition 1x120mm

Power Supply: A.PFC 550W FAN12 Ci-POWER CWT

Screen: Samsung SyncMaster S23B300, 23", Max resolution: FULL HD

I'll only use this card for browsing the internet and playing YouTube videos in FULL HD, nothing more, those are the ONLY things I'll do with it

The only 2 things I want from this card are:

1) It needs to be reliable, I want to use it as many years as possible

2) It needs to be the cheapest card possible (Taking in mind the fact that I want it to be reliable, and to use it as many years as possible

Thank you gentlemen
