Didn't use it "in the old days", but I've recently been pretty into retrocomputing. My cousin gave me his old Apple //e, and I've used my Raspberry Pi as a modem to connect to some BSSes. (Yes, there are some still around.)

I can go into more detail if you'd like.

Last time i used bbs daily was in the beginning of new millenia, so hardly 'old days'.
First time i used groups and bbs was in during my second university year in 1988.

Talking about early 90s here.

Most bbs's had social boards, look at 90% of a forum page these days. They'd have file sections, with shareware, textfiles and gifs (usually not adult).

Most had only one or two lines - so realtime chat didn't really happen.
The games were turn based console games. I played the shit out of tradewars.

You'd typically call a local board, with auto dial set on your modem if it was popular because you had to wait your turn.
Once in, you could send messages, post to forums, and upload and download files... Some gave you a time limit.
What was cool was because it was dialup and long distance was a bitch, there was a local vibe that we don't get on boards now.

There were a few with porn and warez, but they were tough to get into, find, and often didn't stay up long. Lots of hacking a phreaking stuff though.
