so my desktop pc died almost a year ago.
time to make myself a new one.
but there's a thing;
I want to have two GPU's and a M.2 SSD
X99 paired with i7-6900K offers me 40 PCI lanes, and
Z170 with i7-6700K - only 16?
so if I go with x99 with 6900K:
2x GPU will consume 32 lanes,
M.2 SSD will get 4 more lanes, that's like 36 lanes.
if I add another M.2 SSD over either available M.2 or adapter from PCIe, I'll populate all 40 lanes.
what's left for I/O then?
like what's gonna manage USB 3.0 ports and LAN shit?
am I missing something? or not quite understanding?

its ok it will multiplex a few extra lanes for your low priority stuff. Those specs are theoretical maxim-ins. Shit these is days is more smarter than all of us realize.

Quad core i7s have 20 pcie lanes internally, z and x chipset provide additional lanes to the built in controller. Iirc they give 4 extra lanes. So a z170 in will have 24 lanes, and your x99 system would have 44. If you crossfire on z170, it'll limit the gpus to x8 lanes, leaving you 4 or 8 to play with. The x99 system would run x16, which would leave you with 12 total lanes left. If you were to exceed that, it'll default your gpus to x8.
Pcie 3.0x8 and x16 have 1% performance difference, it's literally nothing. As far as your question about usb and everything else. They have separate controllers. The lanes you're referring to are strictly for pcie based devices.

so given that,
on x99 I can have both PGU running at 16x and have two M.2 SSD's at 4x and everything's gonna be just fine, right?
>>56389931
That is what I said, yes. You'll have pcie lanes to spare. X99 might actually give 5 lanes. I can't remember exactly.

my mobo of choice is ROG RAMPAGE V EDITION 10
the layout of it's PCIe slots is:
x16_1
x8_2
x16_3
x8_4
so if I plug two GPU's into x16 1 and 3
and on-board M.2 shares bandwidth with x8_2,
should I connect a second PCIe to M.2 adapter into x8_4 slot (which will disable some USB ports) or can I plug it into x8_2 port to have them both on the same lane?

also note that the idea is RAID 0 256GB SSD's in both M.2
