Isn't ubuntu unstable and buggy? Last time I tried ubuntu 16.04, it literally gave me a "Ubuntu has encountered a problem" error when I booted it up for the first time.

Steam reccomends ubuntu.
So, if steam games will often work best with ubuntu, should that mean that debian should work pretty much just as well?
And, it really should mean something like arch/babbyarch would probably run in to issues ubuntu or mint or debian wouldnt, yeah?
Honestly though you should still h ave a win7/8 partition for games. Play whatever ones work on linux on linux, prefer to buy ones that work on linux, but have windows available for ones that don't.

This. I selected the proprietary driver from the additional drivers menu and after that, it won't boot anymore because it gets stuck on fsck checks which always freezes. But, Ubuntu would work in most other machines I guess.

No, Ubuntu is very stable. The bug you talk about is widely known but doesn't affect anything, just click and it goes away. It's annoying, just that.
If you go with Mint, it does not have that bug.
