>Go help some people in a charity group.
>They recieved a donated computer (an old D530 HP) for simple office tasks but it don't work.
>Ask them why, they tell me it won't start and some weird screen appear.
>Tell them to let me check it, room is full with old people from the board and this cheeky 20-something years old cunt from administration that say "it's broken so it's better to toss it"
>Turn on, BIOS checksum blabla...press F1 to continue and configure settings, set it back and then it boot windows fine.
>People already think i'm some sort of hacker for making it work
>The bitch tell me to turn it off, pull of power cord, connect it again, same error happen.
>"See, you didn't fix it"
>"Ok, just wait a moment", i went to a nearby store, got a CR2032 and came back.
>Open the case (tool-less, easy as hell to dismount), the cunt and the rest start to freak out thinking i'm breaking it.
>Pull out the mobo battery, they are almost chimping out saying i was an asshole and literally "breaking it out of rage"
>Put on the new battery, boot it, reconfigure BIOS, everyone silent because "how the hell does that still work".
>Still enraged, the bitch say that was just the good quality of the pc, pull out the power cord again and reconnect it.
>Nothig happen, it boot right into windows just perfectly
>Rest of people there think now i'm some kind of computer jesus
>See the slut is still salty with a butthurt face
>Say in loud voice "that was simple, each time it powered it cleared the BIOS because the CMOS battery was empty and the system warned you when at post to reconfigure as checksums mistaken it for a corrupted BIOS, it's something common with old computers"
>shit was like talking in chinese to everyone in the room.
>some grandpa that was there watching told her to deal with it as "the kid knows his game".

There's a guy at work who tells people he's a hacker and always has some bat script running so his second monitor looks like a cheap matrix rip off.

He's such a 1337 hacker that he applied for a developer role and got rejected so applied as something else.
>>
>>56343804
I've fixed lots of things for various people and thankfully never ran into such pricks. Usually people roll out the red carpet and completely trust my word on everything.

Which actually makes me more nervous to be wrong.

lol i got recommended to the IT guy at my school for something similar in8th grade or so, i explained it to him and we bonded by hating on normies.

good times, we rofl'ed together when i put personalized (and persistent) prank hotkey scripts on all the teachers' machines during the last week of school. he "wasnt available" to help.
>>
>>56343804
I know that feel. People who just seem to click wrong with you and distrust you and fight you every step of the way. Shit sucks.

Try explaining ports and secure connections to these fucks. It's even worse because you'll get "but it is connected to the internet" and you have to explain "yes, but the door it needs to open is locked."

Or trying to explain why their processor could possibly get hot.

Wow, good one! Can I use this??

honestly she was probably just looking for an excuse to trash it and buy a newer machine
I've seen it happen all the time, there was this one bitch in particular at my old company who was stuck on an older machine (like everyone else because the hardware budget was pretty tight) and she was constantly trying to break it without it looking like it was her fault
eventually she figured out that if she wiggled the VGA output around and left it in a certain position it would stop working until you nudged it back
at that point I got fed up and told her she'd trashed the thing, so I set her up with an ancient Dell laptop with 512MB of RAM and a Pentium 4 running XP and repurposed her machine for a new hire
shit ran like a sack of bricks coated in molasses
she complained until I told her that unless she wanted to buy a new machine out of her own pocket then she was stuck with it until we have the budget for a replacement refurb
pretty sure she learned her lesson after that, didn't have any more problems
>>
>>56346405
oh, and by "older machine" I mean a Lenovo Thinkcenter with 4GB RAM and a second-gen i5, not at all a crappy system

They only paid me 17 an hour. I was one of the lower paid techs, but it was average for newer employees. Everybody else had been there for years and years. One of which was there for over 20.

And it's an hourly job. I was paid for driving there and back in a company car using a company card to pay for it all regardless of getting no work done.

>>56350470
Downtown jobs are awful. I remember having to park several blocks away in a tiny parking spot in my van, had to pull a 70" TV out of it and all my tools slowly not to hit the car right behind it and then wheel that shit to the top of a fucking building to mount it on a wall solo.

Then having to go back for other tools, because it was to be mounted in god damn stone instead of drywall.

People just piss me off because they don't pay their bill, so they get suspended, then complain about the restoral charge on their account.

In modern computers the windows key is in the bios or some shit.
also nobody, especially a female would say elementary os looks good.

If this story were true she would have freaked the fuck out and demanded you put windows back on there, but because you wiped the fucking drive while fucking up the install the recovery partition was over written. When you then tried to download the windows iso and install it, it would say some shit like "the key used is for the version of windows provided by your computers manufacturer" and not work.
You then download a cracked copy thinking your smart and it works, until the "hacker" that cracked it remotes into the computer and gets her facebook with all of her nudes and then he posts them on /b/. Then when it circulates back to her, she assumes it was you that did it and immediately tells everyone that you're the one that violated her privacy and tried to destroy her life because she was mad that you fucked up her computer.

All. The. Fucking. Time. I do tech support for cable, as well as doing regular billing support. Supervisors don't have any extra access to anything that I fucking don't. They have a little more leeway with promotions and all of that, but if I ask them to push a promotion or something through, they'll do it. If I tell you something isn't available, or can't be done, it's because it's not available or can't fucking be done.

These fucking people don't understand that if they'll just be nice, that I'll fucking help you out so much more than I will if you're an asshole. We had a customer calling in repeatedly about a week ago, literally screaming at the top of her lungs. Her husband made a payment on the account with her checking account instead of his own, and it made her checking account bounce. She refused to believe what we were telling her and kept blaming us, and just kept going in circles with the agents. We eventually had to tell her to stop calling in and harassing the agents, and escalated her account information to corporate.

Our sups will even explicitly say, and tell us to say that they are not here for troubleshooting, have equal or lesser tech ability than us, and are only here for feedback on personnel. It never stops people from trying to get their issue "escalated".

I had a guy argue with me for a fucking hour over a charge on his card. He closed all his services with the company years prior and had no account info to give me to try and access anyway, leaving the one option of searching by credit card number + charge amount. He assumed we charged him based on an email we got and absolutely refused to give me the credit card number for fear that we would charge it. He also refused to check his bank. He still continuously expected me to somehow be able to reverse the charge and find his specific info our of literally millions of customers.

Circumstance. That was a temp job, but I still work at a call center. Current job is showing me all I really need is some more concrete experience and knowledge to actually get some sort of admin position elsewhere. Lots of perks to deal the bullshit of it being a call center in the meantime and a better wage than UPS is ever going to give me to move boxes or supervise the box-movers.

I guess at this point I'm just a lazy fuck who's too comfortable to do anything better. Ultimately I intend to go back to school and ruin my life by getting into education, but I gotta fix some other shit first.

The programming classes were not really challenging and many people were struggling with simple stuff, just like you described.
Math was hard for me, but I'm just bad at it.

I now have 2 semesters to go and what really fucks me up is all the business bullshit we have, because of this "educate for the industry" mentality. I don't want to learn about ERP systems and all this crap.
Also, the compiler class was the only C++ course, rest are Java.

I worked in a call center as tier 1 tech support for a webhosting company. There were shitload of tech illiterate people but for some reason I can't remember any specific stories.

The most common thing that shocked me is that people don't know what an address bar is in a browser(or even what a browser is). So many people just open it up and enter the URL into the google search bar on their homepage or some shit.

It's also always fun to explain how nameservers and DNS records work to someone who never heard of those before. Speaking of which you get your share of "IT'S CURRENT YEAR - everything happens in seconds on this magical internet thing - surely it is your fault" when you try to explain DNS propagation times or other stuff you cannot speed up like domain transfers.

Deal with dedicated servers and enterprise customers now so stupid shit is much less common. The only major stupidity here is their 10 year old servers being slow and OOMing all the time and them refusing to migrate to a new one. Other than that, the stupid things happening it's just them having a brainfart and messing with the firewall to lock themselves out or shutting down instead of rebooting their server by mistake or whatever.

The lessons to learn are to not act like a twat, read instructions and know when you're ignorant of something.

But those lessons apply to most of life,.

I dont know how the fuck it works, its not going to just say the key. You have to recover it yourself with some third party programs, probably from within a windows environment.
The way my vista works is I just install windows and it just verifies itself. If I ever replace my motherboard in that computer I would loose vista rights.

Listen to me, first of all don't think you are going to make big bucks as a computer programer, this isn't the 1980's anymore.
Second, and most important. If they are teaching you idiot stuff, all you will know is idiot stuff, and you will have a shitty profession.
I wouldn't even take a class that starts you off with a meme language like python.
If I'm going into be a computer programmer, don't teach me how to be a fool.

Yea it is, but Ive found the older you get the more of a chore it becomes.
Its especially worse when youre not just joyriding. Personally, Ill take off through the backroads of my mountain state with the gps turned off and come out in some random place half a day later. I love it.
But when you HAVE to go to some bullshit place for some bullshit reason its just a chore. Fucking hate driving to the store, fucking hate going to the next state to just get parts, fucking hate driving an hour just to get a cd. When driving isnt what you want, its like watching paint dry, but its still better than watching grass grow so if I have to wait for a place to open, driving is defiantly better.

I had no idea what that was at the time. All I knew about linux back then was it's hard to fuck up without root, malware targets the big targets, and with enough google you can figure anything out. Even if I had I probably wouldn't have done it. I would have had to explain mounting a to them.

Hahaha, god, luckily I don't work with any custom built computers. I never see any of the retarded fuck ups that people would do to the internal components.

Here's a story from when I worked at a Geek Squad.
>Some idiot decides that we should have a window where clients can watch us do repairs.
>Even more stupid, we have our monitors that we use to connect to the KVM switch facing out towards the window. Clients can see the screen.
>I'm working on a computer with one of those monitors.
>Get thirsty and step away for a drink.
>Come back and I see a porn screen saver through the window.
>Customers can see the porn.
>Make a mad dash to the computer and change theme to Windows 7 Basic.

>>56358545
>luckily I don't work with any custom built computers.
No, I meant like you said trying to explain to them how a cpu can be so hot, don't slip up and say something like "and some cpus can get soo hot that a heatsink wont work anymore and people have to water cool them".
Because to a pleb that means "if you hold it under water it will be even cooler, yea Imma turbo charge my cooling"
Then they literally pour water on it or stick their computer in a bucket of water and turn it on.

>I really don't get why people leave their porn in plain view
I dont either. When I was a kid my gf at the time's step father had porn screen saver slide show, photo shopped elephant dicks railing girls on a beach.. I didn't know and their basement was flooding so I went to notify him before some shit got really fucked up.. went in there and saw it, he then scolded me about "you shouldn't just go into peoples bed rooms", but could tell from his face he was more embarrassed than anything.
If their bedroom was in the back on the house or something that would be one thing, but it was literally attached to the front living room (where we were) and there was no doors, just a blanket halfway pulled across the doorframe.

I learned years ago that no matter how much work you put into idiot-proofing that there exists a better class of idiot.

Our team rolled out Windows N.T. Terminal Server to about 400 users. We were told by management to lock it down. I spent 2 weeks reg-hacking my way into the most secure NT server ever released. They couldn't do shit but print and open the 2 apps needed to do their jobs. No open channels to get to explorer or cmd anywhere. No goddamn browser either.

After finally getting QA & mgmt to agree that it was bulletproof, I took the day off while my partner rolled it out. It lasted 42 FUCKING MINUTES!
When I got back the monkeys were all working, so I asked how he fixed the issue. He laughed, "I rolled back to vanilla NT and sent out a memo that said THE NEXT PERSON TO TAMPER WITH SOFTWARE THAT IS NOT DIRECTLY NECESSARY FOR THEIR JOB FUNCTION WILL BE IMMEDIATELY TERMINATED."
They will always find a bigger idiot.

It's a good day when the people you're helping aren't blaming or insulting you while or after you work. Even if the client is a fucking idiot, if they're calm and patient about it, it's not too bad. I can live with people who have no idea how to save a file, but I can't live with people who constantly tell you they aren't an idiot and proceed to repeatedly prove themselves wrong. However, nothing really beats that heart sinking feeling after driving for 2 hours, ringing the doorbell and no one comes to the door.

424 was in reply to someone giving me shit about forgetting windows stuff after being on linux for years.

513 was probably the post that said to do dir /s in windows to recursivly list all of your files or something.

anything related to in granny in law

buy snew computer."everything works fine and internet is on"

SO she gets some old computer lady over to update windows an dinstall AVG for $100
I have more worse stories like wifi being off and her freaking out and scared when I mention going to reboot the router. I swear she thinks I'm either a retard or out for her credit card info. She's nice but so much cringe with computer. Literally doesn't understand that AOL mail is just a server and not an actual program she needs to set up.

Why the fuck were those deleted? That's ridiculous.
Those are on topic and even if they weren't there's much more off topic shit on here to delete. Such as my thread, but it's on page 9 rn so I guess it's ok, janny will never find it
>>
>>56357624
you realize that if you change your mac address it will assign you a new ip, right? my cable company also has a static ip that will never change, but changing the mac address and restarting the modem and router always gets me a new ip.
>>
>>56361527
That anon probably did something to piss off a mod, so the mod deleted all his posts.

Pure speculation, though.
>>
>>56361550
Ive heard shit about that but there isnt an option to change the routers mac on the customer login or the technician login.

>DNC intern
>>
>>56361873
Its a (probably cheap shit) modem-router provided by the internet company. This thing is so locked down its retarded.
The customer login doesn't even have the rights to change the wifi name OR password.
The tech login I have, I'm really not suppose to have, does have access to the passwords and stuff, but still doesn't have an option for the mac. I just went through it again.
You do mean change the mac of the router/modem right? Or do you mean change the computers mac that is on the first Ethernet port?
>>
>>56362040
i change the mac address of the router because it's a built in function, but i imagine that spoofing the computer mac address should get you a new IP too.

How does Windows Boost work anyway?
>>
>>56343804
>Say in loud voice "that was simple, each time it powered it cleared the BIOS because the CMOS battery was empty and the system warned you when at post to reconfigure as checksums mistaken it for a corrupted BIOS, it's something common with old computers"

Where is the BIOS checksum stored? Wouldn't it be erased at power-down just like the rest of the user settings stored on the battery?
>>
>>56343804

I'm fine with retards and illiterates, it's the arrogant and spiteful ones that get me.
>>
>>56363047
it just werks
it's also technically way faster than USB polling because of how low level it is if you're into placebos
>>
>>56363921
>Wouldn't it be erased at power-down
It's erased in the sense of reset to zero.

Let's say you have 512 bytes, with 508 bytes of data and 4 bytes of CRC32.

When they're all reset to zero due to a dead battery, the bios will calculate the checksum of 508 zeroes, which is 0fbb6d54.

It will then compare that to the erased checksum, which is now 00000000.

Since 0fbb6d54 != 00000000, it's a mismatch.

did that with my mom, now she knows how to use her tablet as a remote, something i didn't know it did

give them a boot on the ass to fix there shit, and they learn shit you never looked into
