What happened to steam OS? I never see it posted here anymore.
I have an old hd6870 and i3 2120 laying around with 6GB ddr3 memory. Could I assemble it into a cheap steam box and play shit like cs go on my tv? How are Linux drivers for AMD now? Still trash?
>>56329590
yes you can
from what i understand, amd's drivers are still pretty ass for linux but the way to go if you want open sores
i think 6000hd series got legacy'd tho but cs:go isn't intensive
>>56329590
Its just ubuntu with a skin.

They've come a long way, both blob and open sores. Also, nvidia blob is generally pretty decent.

Not supported on legacy hardware though

Any Linux distro + Steam in big picture mode is essentialy SteamOS
>>56330765
Which distro performs best then? Ubuntu?
>>56331047
depends. Just use what you like.
Using best and distro in one sentence is not advisable on /g/

Debian*

Valve is waiting with updates until most of their games are switched to vulkan.
Dota and CS:GO have already begun, after them it will be easier to port other source 1 and upcoming source 2 games.
Pretty sure they gave up on their directx to opengl layer
AMD ruined a lot of plans with mantle
>>56331047
Ubuntu is the only supported OS, so yes.
>>56329760
amd linux drivers are on occasion outperforming amd windows drivers these days.
>>56331143
They also gave up on developing games
>>56331143
Because opengl cannot be any kind of alternative to directx, vulkan can.

Debian*

Ubuntu with a lightweight DE? Since it's got better drivers than SteamOS?
Or does DE not affect gaming performance? I was thinking something like Ubuntu mate.
>>56331183
I thought opengl performed better but was more difficult to program for?
>>56331380
I assume you have a gaming build in the first place.
If yes, Mate should not affect your performance.
It's diffetent if you use a 8-year old PC.
Also depends on the games itself.
Drivers should be more or less the same, depending on how often your distro's package maintainers update them.
tl;dr depends, but Ubuntu Mate should be fine.
I used it on a 300€ netbook to play Civ V, worked fine for hours.

I'VE SEEN THIS MOVIE BEFORE
I use it regularly. The big thing about SteamOS is that it is ideal for people who aren't good at linux, but want a console experience on a PC without the windows tax. That's sort of a small niche (although there are lots of people who I think SHOULD be in that niche and just don't realize it).
Most of us here are better served by going with some lightweight ubuntu or debi-based distro like cublinux, lubuntu or something similar.
