Just got pic related.
How hard is it to replace the keyboard with the backlit version?
Also battery reccomendations? Should I go for the 9 cell?

Okay,I roll for Ubuntu.
As for the keyboard, make sure the backlit version has the leds powered by the KB connector, and that the connector on the keyboard you want to install matches the PCB socket.

Rolling Kali.
If the thinkpad is anything like any other laptop, the keyboard replacement should be pretty easy. You just need to lift the keyboard out of the body of the laptop, and remove the ribbon from the motherboard.

Does the thinklight still work? You won't need a backlit kb then.

Replacing keyboard is easy, just make sure battery is removed and you aren't plugged into AC. Unscrew the screws underneath the keyboard, pop out the palm rest and replace with new keyboard.
6 cell works well for me, 9 cell isn't worth the bulk imo (but depends how many hours you need - I get about 4-5 hours on 6 cell)
If you want decent battery life go with Windows 7 or 8 and a low power preset, otherwise Ubuntu/XFCE with tlp and all the configs comes close but still at least 2 hours less battery life than in windows.
