I want to watch anime but i'm on an really old and shitty laptop, not at home with my main setup. There's lot of problems with it and probably some damage somewhere. If i use VLC it's heating like crazy and eventually froze, which is unfortunate.
I'm not kidding, even watching youtube html5 (if not fullscreen) is not an option.
What media player is the less resource intensive ?
mpv mpc-hc ?
I just want to see cute 2D girls moving smoothly and saying stuffs.
i can't install gentoo right now though.

download 480p versions of anime.

What about upscaling? Shouldn't that be a fairly easy process for 2d animations with flat colors? Any players that deal in that?

Open that laptop up and use a vacuum cleaner to remove any dust. Then, reapply heat paste.
Screw back together
