~~STUPID QUESTIONS GENERAL~~

So how would I use object-oriented principles to make a scrabble game in Python? Everything I've done so far has been short scripts. Players can obviously be turned to objects, I suppose the board can be turned into an object, but what else?
>>
>>56313884

Use a dictionary file to generate objects for every possible word. Make the dictionary an object too.
>>
why the fug doesn't firefox display unicode characters?

It's not a system problem because I can copy and paste them into my terminal and they display fine

So I have a laptop with a battery that last around 3 hours.

I asked a while ago if Installing some light weight linux distro like lubuntu would increase the batterys time.

One person said: ''You should probably install the OS this laptop came with, it is optimized for that''. Since this one is used I never tried it with its original OS (windows 7).

So how true is this?

I have KDE on it and I just feel like it drains the battery in no time.
>>
>>56313923
Because the page uses (or the browser defaults to) a font that does not have those characters.

Seems like a lot of wasted energy. I was thinking when the game starts I'd generate a "pouch" object that generates a certain amount of fixed letters that are randomly put together and which are taken out at random by the player. It seems unneeded to generate for every possible word, as opposed to generating points/lengths based on, say, player attempts that are checked by a simple dictionary. i.e. the player attempts to play "moot", it's found in wordDictionary, it is passed to points() and length(), etc. Would this be considered more "functional" than "object-oriented"?
>>
>>56313976
I've tried changing the default Firefox font and it hasn't fixed it, what else should I try?
>>
>>56313972
The guy is full of shit.

KDE is a pretty heavy distro for a laptop, anything else will (most likely) improve battery life.
>>
>>56313984

No no. Every word needs to be an object, as well as the dictionary. Just think about the dozens of times in the next year when you will need and object for the word "Chthonic", thanks to object oriented programing you will have it sitting right there in a modular fashion, so you will be able to reuse it instead of wasting time redoing it. This is just one of the many wonders of object oriented programming.

If I get a Ruizu mp3 player, what's the easiest way to plug it into my car to play music? Do I just use an aux cord and plug it in or a usb cable? Do I need to download the songs in a particular format in order for the songs to play through my car speakers?

I bought a Dell Optiplex 990 from a guy at a recycling center yesterday. It has decent specs for a prebuilt: i7 2600, 16gb ram; all it needed was a new hard drive and cpu fan (both of which I had spares of lying around).

Is this normal battery levels for a phone that I check like twice a day for Snapchat updates and leave it idle with no WiFi (and in airplane mode) literally 23 hours and 50 minutes a day? How could I go about fixing it?

get xubuntu. xfce is a light DE. go watch some videos on youtube of what i3 is, you probably aren't going to want it
>>
>>56315881
That's all backwards though. The last thing you want to do is separate a CPU from the mobo/ram and lock it up behind a pci connection. Not to mention you'd have to rethink cooling, power and form factors entirely. Plus there's no real reason to.
>>
>>56315919
I don't see a problem there.

Question: is port forwarding the same as static routing?
>>
>>56315919
If its on airplane mode the majority of the time and youre only checking snapchat once a blue moon, then those stats seem okay. How much would you say your battery drains per day?
>>
>>56315991
Maybe 3-5% in between checks twice a day, then when I go to actually turn on wifi and check Snapchat I drop like 2-3% in the process. I'm going to let it die completely then charge it up back to full and see if the results are same on the next charge? If not, I'll do a factory reset and see if it's something on in the deep background that's running in idle.

I didn't see a scripting general so I guess I'll ask here.

So what I want to do is create a little batch script, might even be a one liner, that is persistent. By persistent I mean that it's monitoring constantly in real time.

I want to write a batch script that is monitoring to see if a file appears and if it does to delete it immediately. How do I go about doing that?

A way I thought of was to simply create the 'script' to delete the file and have it do it periodically via a scheduled task, but that seems inefficient and no fun at all.

Can anybody help me with this?

Why are so many mainstream distros ridden of the "keep free and non-free stuff" separate mind virus?

It's fine if they want to play that stupid game with RHEL-based distros, but Debian should just give it up. I choose Debian specifically because it supports non-free software. I shouldn't have to install my drivers from a separate DVD or edit the configuration files to enable hidden repos.

>>
>>56316419
It would be pointing to a specific file (or folder).
>>
>>56316408
I don't know about doing it persistently, but you could do it periodically through the task scheduler easily enough without even needing to write a script.

To actually have it monitoring the file actively at all times I don't think you'd be able to do this in batch, and a scripting language is probably not the best bet in general for this kind of thing. Probably better to create a proper binary in a compiled language. In general though I would suggest that this approach is pretty wasteful, and unless you absolutely need the file to be deleted IMMEDIATELY it would be better to just have something check it every X minutes.

I get where you're coming from, but there's also the problem of people assuming they have a good solution to a problem but in reality there's a much simpler way to fix it that would be obvious if they gave the whole picture.

Either way there are potentially problems.

>>56316408
What I meant was to explain why you (think) you need to do this. There are often alternative avenues to solve a problem that can be easier, simpler, etc.

But whatever, maybe you have a good reason to not provide that info. Maybe this is the only or best solution.

It seems like this stackoverflow post is closely related to your problem, and you should be able to modify the powershell script easily to suit your needs (just google some syntax and replace the action to be done on an event).

Posted this earlier but would like more suggestions.
I recently did a clean win7 install with an iso from the digital river mirror. I checked the checksums to make sure they were legit. After installing with no problems, and using Daz loader (from mdl forums), Windows update is not working - gets stuck on checking for updates, the standalone installer for single updates also get stuck. I tried another image of a different build and still get the same issue. I've tried everything, windows troubleshooter, file checker tool, readiness tool, nothing works.
I'm getting frustrated here, to the point that I'm thinking of using a preactivated iso. I'm trying to set up a clean install for gf, if it was for myself, I'd probably go some debian distro.

A question about fans. Do molex power fans automatically change speed depending on the heat of the CPU and internals, or are they static? Basically, I want to make a custom heatsink, since I cannot find an appropriate bracket for it, with two fans on the front and back of the radiator. Basically, I'm gonna make a "ghetto" Evo 212, and I want to know if I need to use the CPU fan power or if molex will work.

Alternatively, will any 120m fan work the same, or should I look for a certain kind?
>>
>>56317108
Static
>>
Is gigabit internet worth it? Like, will I realistically see those speeds ever in real applications, or will I pretty much always be bottlenecked by whoever I'm downloading from?
>>
>>56317084
Let it go through some cycles it will unstuck by itself.
Just leave updates activated and move on with your life
>>
>>56317021
Nope. Should be able to install xubuntu right over. You can then switch between DEs when you login (if you ever feel the need to)
>>
>>56317108
For them to change speed it's another pin that connects the fan to the motherboard that controls the speed. If it only connects to the PSU and not to the motherboard then obviously it's not being controlled by the mobo at all, it simply gets powered on when the system is and will run constantly at full power.
>>
>>56317115
Alright, so I'll need to use two fans with a CPU fan power plug, yeah? Would it work fine if I hooked two of them to the same plug, or would it work only with one fan?

>>
>>56317120
You could probably max out on well-seeded torrents, since the load is distributed.

Stuff like Steam might max out as well depending on if Valve actually allows customers to download from them at such speed.

As far as general downloading from arbitrary sites, I doubt you'll max out, but at least you'll get as much speed as theoretically possible from that source.

As far as "worth it" is concerned that's entirely a matter of how much it costs compared to other speed tiers.

Depends on the amperage of the fans, if it's higher that the output it will not spin at all, a safer bet would be given your basic electronic understanding (no offense) would be to buy a Chinese knock off and replace the fans if it's too noisy

There's no such thing as a brief introduction to ALL technology because there's so much to cover no one would ever make it through the whole thing
>>
>>56317171
Well it's powered by the PSU either way. The only difference is whether it connects directly to the PSU, or the connection gets routed through the motherboard first. Also even fans connected to the motherboard don't necessarily adjust their speeds, unless they have the pin in place to do so. The only time I see a PSU fan being a benefit is if the fan requires so much power that the motherboard pins aren't capable of delivering it, but such a fan would almost surely be overkill since fans really don't require that much power at all.

Also by connecting to the motherboard you allow the system to be aware of whether the fan is running, which can be useful. Some systems will automatically shut off or sound an alarm immediately if the fan stops running for example.

If you look at hard drives, you'll see that the price increases drastically after the 1tb mark. However, with micro sd cards that isn't the case and the price increases in a linear manner. So why would anyone want two 16gb sd cards over a single 32gb one, when they're the same price?

Wait, so there are two pointers?

You're saying that in this example, frodo is a pointer which points to an unnamed pointer which points to a const char?

What's the difference between sniffing and spoofing?
And which should be used to see what's going on and what site are being requested?
>>

Sniffing: Collecting data
Spoofing: Sending false data
>>

Sniffing is gaining information about someone else's transmissions over the network. Snooping.

Spoofing is changing some parts of data you yourself are sending, like changing IP address in an outcoming IP packet to some other IP address.

If something says A/b/g/n or A/b/g/n/AC, then it's got the 5GHz band thrown in there. 5ghz isn't affected by microwaves or traditional wifi networks which is really good in wifi congested areas. But it doesn't reach as far as the 2.4 band does, and it doesn't go through walls as well. Also not all devices have 5Ghz, but it's becoming more common. An AC 5Ghz has a little more range than an N 5Ghz, and a much faster top speed, although it doesn't matter too much if all you use your wifi for is internet.

>>56318870
You might get lucky and erase the information, but SSDs don't work like HDDs, and filling one up even completely, isn't guaranteed to do it. Try to find a secure erase utility by your manufacturer.

if you are in your friend's car, prolly not an issue.

Your first article is 6 years old, which is forever in SSD tech, and also it's talking about how you can often be unable to recover your data, not whether you can reliably delete it. The second one actually does an excellent job covering at length why you can't trust SSDs to consistently erase all information simply by filling them up.

If I have a computer with a lot of bays is it even worth me getting an NAS, what are the advantages? How would I go about make one of my drives accessible by the network?
>>
>>56319153
Advantage is mainly they will generally use less power which is nice for something that will run 24/7
You can set up an FTP/Samba server to share your drives over the network.

I'm currently only using a normal consumer grade drive. Won't having it on 24/7 degrade the drive? Or is it mostly just writing? If so I should probably move /temp/ over there as well right?

You can have it spin down after a time, but excessive spinups/spindowns and head loading/unloading wear a drive more than just leaving it on.

Just tried to create a partition of 4TB on my 4TB hard drive with gparted.
However, it didn't work; it said the partition is only ~400 GB and already filled with ~8 GB. So defninitely some unintended behaivour.

I am using a GPT partition, so it should be able to handle 4TB partitions.

The drive is mapped and encrypted with dm-crypt/LUKS in case this matters.

What is the most lightweight way of keeping my porn separate from the rest of my PC?

I have heard of people using VMs or archived USB sticks.
I feel like a veracrypt archive would be a pretty no-fuss way of doing it. Only hassle I can think of would be needing to expand it if it starts to fill up.

Sandboxie is probably the lightest way to confine pron in your browser and to a certain degree in other programs. If you encrypted your main stash and sandboxed the rest you'd probably be good. If your system can handle it VMs are real nice simple solutions.

>>
>>56320016
this is not a question to ask a 4chan thread, but it depends on a huge number of factors like your financial position and satisfaction w/ your current life.

you should talk to a career counselor and family/friends who know your situation.

but as a general rule: if you can support yourself and have a stable life in the interim of a career change and the change is important/valuable to you/will make you significantly happier then you should seriously consider it.
