Imagine using a 1988 computer in 1995.

The fuck happened. Seems like the progress slowed down massively.
>>
It was originally built in 2014 for college, but I've upgraded pretty much every part in it except for the motherboard and case this past year.
>>
I wonder what the average lifetime of a motherboard is.
Upgraded mine lots of times but at some point I wonder when I should rather change the mainboard instead of buying parts for the old one.

It's old. The CPU is a core 2 duo @ 2.4ghz and 4gb ram with a gt 740

from 2012. just got around to oc'ing my 3570k. shoulda bought a better motherboard. can only do 4.2ghz before stability issues come up and voltage jumps for smaller and smaller gains. i'm not a very good oc'er though.

Owner of multiple systems, current system I'm using rn was built earlier this year from used parts. Most of the parts are from mid-late 2013, SSD's a bit older though. Not enough power for my needs so I'll be probably parting this off for a Xeon workstation build in the future.

>>56307495
Software bloat didn't advance with it, new shit may have a lot of more advanced features but they still spend most of their time doing the same fundamental tasks they were doing in 1995, and hardware is just so damn fast now that it really doesn't matter what the fuck you throw at it as long as the data sets are small.

I can still play AAA games on medium~low settings so I still probably wont replace my computer for a while.

This one was built last year and I expect it to last for a while. The one before was from 2009 and it was certainly starting to show its age, it ran everything I wanted to but everything was just a little slow and crappy, but it's impressive how long it held up.

Got 6 GB RAM for it from the get go and have since stuck an SSD in there but no newer gfx card.

I guess the combination of the i7 being really powerful and processor improvements plateauing made them last for a long time.

I have a new macbook pro as my main machine and mostly use the PC as a torrent station/plex server now though, and if I ever make it a dedicated home server I'm sure it'll be great for that.

T500 here, manufactured in 2009, bought for first year university in 2011. T9400 running at 2.53 GHz, 4 gigs of RAM, , HD 3650 switchable graphics and the 1680x1050 screen (which was almost fucking impossible to find, and apparently still is). Honestly perfectly content with it, haven't even really felt the need to upgrade the 7200 RPM hard disk.

I did briefly own a modest desktop with an i3-2130 in first and second year university, but I sold it after quitting video games. In everyday tasks it felt no faster than the T500.

An A1224 iMac, bought new in December 2007. 3 GB RAM, 2.4 GHz, Radeon HD 2600. Never skipped a beat, except for two occasions where I unwisely installed Mountain Lion and Yosemite. Both times I reverted back to Snow Leopard, which is basically the last good version of OS X anyways.

My main machine is an Elitebook 8560p from 2012.
It has pretty good hardware, 8GB of ram and an i7-2640M, so I never really notice it's dated. I never thought of it as dated until people started pointing out that it was thick and heavy. Which it is.
It also has a DB9 serial port and even an RJ11 connection for a phone modem (which unfortunately only works with windows).
I replaced the optical drive with a second hard drive and replaced my main hard drive with an SSD, so I'd say it's keeping up pretty well and if it holds up mechanically, I can get another couple of years out of it.
I actually use that serial port.

The 7500 is pretty gnarly. More than 20 years old yet with OS 8.6 it feels almost pseudo-modern. Most important of all, it can run Starcraft. Poorly, but it will run.

>32GB DDR3 ram

Reason for the fuck ton of ram was that I run many VMs. The GPU was because back then I used to be into 3D animation, but I don't have enough time for it anymore so I dropped it. I can still run every game that comes out maxed whenever I feel like playing a game. This will remain a trend for a while I image, as hardware manufacturers are focusing more on energy efficiency then massive gains.

U purchased it 9 years ago, it was high end back then and expensive as fuck.
It rocked a 2.4GHZ intel quad, 8 gigs of ddr2 ram and a high end gpu, back then it was the shit, nobody even had quad cores, everyone had only shitty dual coars
9 years later, and it is still going strong and since i don't play games anymore (i don¨t have the time since in my freetime i dev games in unity instead) there is no need to throw out money for a new machine
the only upgrades i did over the time were several 2TB HDDs, one 120GB SSD and a new graphics card HD5850 (back when it came out)
It's amazing that i can still play new games nowadays decently on a machine that is almost a decade old

Built mine back in 2011.

>2500k
>GTX 570
>8gb ram

Only thing I've added to it has been more storage. Up to 4TB right now.

Works well for me since I don't do much gaming. Might upgrade the RAM at some point.

>Imagine using a 1988 computer in 1995.
Well, 386s or even 286s would be very possible in 1995.
Also, Amigas.
So, it's not very unimaginable.

Bretty old.
Got an 8600gt banging around in there. Just upgraded the Q8200 to an i5 4690k and traded the DDR2 for 16gb of 3.
Just need a new GPU and it's on for the next few years. My shit is always outdated but it works for me.

16 GB is not a meme. I have 8 GB and I can exhaust it from time to time with tasks from the following
- Browser with multiple Google Maps tabs
- Android emulation
- Multiple jd-gui windows
- yaourt extracting after compacting large packages from AUR
- Extracting thumbnails using ffmpeg
(not with one single task on my system tho)

2011:
i3-540
6 GB DDR3 RAM (4GB laptop RAM and 2GB desktop)
512GB SSD
PicoPSU clone that delivers150w peak
GTX 750ti
Shitty Intel mobo

My rig is a bit hard to pin down as it's been upgraded twice and built partly out of second hand parts:
>Second hand i7 950
>Second hand GTX 670
>12GB of DDR3 at 1600 MHz
>256GB Curcial MX100 SSD
Built it in January 2015 as I wanted a rig that I could use for working on my master's thesis on GPGPUs at home as my 2011 MBP didn't quite cut the mustard for that.

Upgrades I've made since I built it:
>240GB M.2 connected Kingston HyperX Predator on a PCIe adapter board (spring/summer 2015)
>GTX 970 (autumn 2015)

Upgrades I plan on doing to it:
>Put it in a better case as the Bitfenix Neos it's in right now has such shit airflow I had to cut out the 3,5" HDD enclosure out with a pair of tin snips to allow at least halfway decent front-to-back airflow
>Zen CPU+motherboard once they become available, will probably coincide with the case replacement
>>
the whole thing is from 2005, apparently.
i reckon some of the parts in it are newer than that, but the HDD is definitely that old. 40GB with xp pre installed
finally got off my ass and built a new one, which should be interesting
>>

The oldest component is the case and one of my older hard drives which I use as a temporary “scratchpad” drive only. (No important data storage)

Everything else has seen a complete cycle within the past 2 years or so, finally being completed by my hard drive replacement which literally happened today.
