Not exactly. Dust accumulation on the lens is a real thing that can happen and affect the ability of the drive to read a disc properly.

But if you use your optical drive often enough then you shouldn't get any dust build up because the rotating disc itself will cause enough disturbance to move dust off.

I have one.
It actually works. There are very tiny brushes at the bottom of the disk, so when it spins it cleans the lens.

Worked a bit on my failing PS2 back in the day. Back when the lasers were capsulated in plastic and got scratched easy. These days there is no use really.

Mine came with a tiny vial of cleaning fluid which I'm pretty sure it was just windex with a little extra isopropanol.
