I'm a rich nerd but my free time is valuable to me. Is VR worth it yet as far as time investment goes?
Wait for PSVR.

As a purely consumer-level basis (movie-watching, video-game playing, etc)? No, wait for around the 3rd-4th generation before you hop on that bandwagon
right now, the technology is novel in a way that mostly appeals to early adopters that have to be on the """""""""bleeding edge"""""""""" of technology and independent developers that have the luxury/insanity to develop for it. Most of the content you will find are 360 videos (no parrallax, depth, motion sickness-inducing, but at least phones and gearvr can run it) or crappy pajeet-tier mobile """""""""experiences""""""" (because surprise surprise, nobody wants to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to make a AAA game for a platform with slightly above 100,000 total users.)
But if you really want to use it to develop or play around with, it's fantastic. Even if the resolution is subpar (it's not horrible, but bad enough that the general population wouldn't want to buy one), VR itself is genuinely amazing. Once the resolution gets above 8k (or even 16k), and the form factor gets even better than pic related, you're going to see it everywhere. Imo, it's an amazing technology with great prospects to change society, but most of that will come from AR. Try to get a demo first so you know what you're getting. Also, don't get the oculus rift for the love of god. Valve's lighthouse tech is superior in every way to oculus' infrared approach and facebook's walled garden is shit.
vr porn is also worth a try, you can do it with a shitty cardboard viewer and a mobile phone if you want. It's not going to go anyplace beyond 360 videos for a while, though.
Dude, VR is perfect right now, get it while you still can, those HTC vives are going to start to sell like hotcakes
If you have a high performance phone, you could have a low-cost experiment with google cardboard. I recommend getting one of the $11 chinese plastic enclosures on ebay with straps and padding and a free bluetooth remote.
I love it for watching 3d blueray rips.
No, but if you're looking to spend your money, I can give you my steam wishlist
