Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

First off, GNU isn't Unix nor is Linux. There's a original Unix which is now trademarked by Apple so the only "true" Unix today is OS X (which again is basically just a broken BSD). On the other hand, when people talk about Unix they ususally mean unix-like systems and the way of doing things like "everything is a file", piping things, the original philosophy, etc.

And Yes. Next step is shell scripting. There are some good resources at OPs copypasta link and the threads website.
>>
Why is Linux so fucking awful?

I'm a first time user using raspbian. Why do all the most simple, mundane tasks require so many fucking steps just to complete? I read somewhere on stack exchange that people enjoy nano while it makes me want to literally kill myself. Why, in terminal commands, are directories case fucking sensitive?? It's 2016, no self respecting OS should be that autistic about directories. And for the love of god why do you have to chmod a simple fucking script just to execute it? Windows figured out how to implement batch scripts in the fucking 90s. Are you really telling me I have to write the entire file over again every time I want to test it? Kys. Why do I have to open a text file on my desktop with fucking SUDO if I want to be able to save it? Garbage. Why is the default keyboard layout set to the UK? Garbage. Why didn't it update when I set the time zone? Because Linux is garbage, that's why. And I know what you'll say, "these are just a raspbian/debian specific bugs. My preferred version of Linux much superior" go Fuck yourself. There are some things that should just fucking work, no matter the flavor.

Let me put it like this, I now understand why Apple charges so much for OSX. It's because Apple had to implement so many basic fucking features into Linux to make it even remotely usable.

>>

I couldn't get it installed on a Debian VM for some reason, which is why I'm trying Neon now.

>>56288413
It's basically Ubuntu LTS with shiny, shiny KDE on top, so at least it'll feel familiar. I haven't had any problems so far.

Two things to note though, are that: For one, Discover is slow and runs like ass, at least in my shitty little VM. And two, the base install is surprisingly minimal. It doesn't come with many things at all, so it won't be as easy to use as your usual *buntu flavors.
>>
>>56288367
That's cool. I'm running kubuntu with backports but I'm thinking of adding the neon repos. How stable has kde been for you?

I really can't comment on overall stability. I've been running the VM for just about a day total.
If it counts for anything though, I've heard several people say it's a lot more stable than KUbuntu and that things don't crash as often.

Now stop being a baby and use dwm: the gentoo of window managers. Literally edit a C file and recompile to modify settings. The statusbar has to be generated via a shell script (typically in xinitrc). And the whole thing is <2000 lines of C code.

I'm running Firefox with a handful of tabs, Emacs with a few files, VLC playing a video, and my memory usage is at 800MB/1.5GB.

>Does anyone else have the problem that the distro gets boring after a few months? What distro are you stuck on?

I have that feeling, yes. Once I get settled in and use a distro for long enough, I get curious about how other distros work or do things differently. Trying out multiple distros is great for learning and to be able to better compare them for yourself. I don't think there's any "One Distro To Rule Them All" (because everyone has different preferences and needs) but I've found a happy place in Debian for myself. It's easy install, minimal enough for me, stable, and well supported.

Sometimes when I switch to a different XWMCONFIG, I'll get into the new WM, but then when I try to go back to a different WM, it locks me out and I can't do shit but restart my PC.

I've done much searching for info in the last 30 minutes and none of it was super conclusive. Things were telling me that .xprofile was sourced by LightDM, which it was not in my case.

Anyway, I'm doing more reading to hopefully be less retarded, and I'm using startx now. Thanks.

My 2 cents: Sure, he's being helpful, but he's also using a tripcode for NO GOOD REASON. What purpose does his identity serve, other than to bolster his own ego and piss people off? This site is anonymous, and anyone using a tripcode is fully aware that they're going to be inevitably hated and shit on wherever they go and whatever they do. Its not up for debate, I don't need a reason to use a tripcode.

Nothing you do or say will dissuade me from doing so and you should own up to your own shitposting instead of blaming other people.
>>
>>56291534
To install Ubuntu, get the iso, then plug in your usb drive. It's probably /dev/sdb, so, sudo dd if=ubuntuiso.iso of=/dev/sdb. Then boot from that usb drive and install. Choose "use whole disk".

Your partitioning is fine but that windows 7 partition is useless as it's so small.

Yeah, just go to their site and find the installer.
>did I fuck up my partitions?
No, but the Windows 7 one is definitely too small for any real use. I'd just backup any important files that you care about and then completely wipe all your partitions.

If you do plan on dual-booting, then you need a partition big enough for Windows 7 (and all the programs/files that get installed to it over time), and it's generally recommended that you install Windows 7 first because it will overwrite Linux bootloaders.

This happened to my older brother.
He got a hot tip informing him of the next penis inspection day, so he bought a penis prostetic dildo from the local in-out-in-out store and wore it to school the follow week.

The inspector must have just thought my brother was embarassed of his penis size, so he didn't call him out on it.

Well anyways, a month passes and my brother is found dead in his bedroom with his dick rotted off from dick cancer.

Well, having unused space is generally pointless.
You can use it as hard drive space, yes. Probably from the utility you were using to view partitions, even. You can just mount the partition at, say, /home/$USER/foo and you'll just be able to throw 3.75 gigs of files there.
I don't know if you can resize partitions with encryption and all, but try looking through some settings.

Yeah dog, you can expand a neighboring partition to use the unallocated space. By neighboring, I mean they have to be touching. So you should be able to safely expand/allocate your primary partition size into that unallocated space.. but only when the disk being resized (/dev/sda3) isn't mounted. So you can do it during the Ubuntu install process, because non of your partitions will be mounted.

autoremove
autoremove is used to remove packages that were automatically
installed to satisfy dependencies for other packages and are now no
longer needed.

It is somewhat dumb, but you can use this to remove (or purge) a desktop environment, or any meta-package.
apt remove $(apt-cache depends gnome-core | cut -f 2 -d ':' | tr '\n' ' ')

Discussed in a recent thread, this is because meta-packages mark all their dependencies as manually installed, so when you remove the meta-package, it literally just removes the meta-package itself and not the dependencies. The code snippet above lists all the meta-packages dependencies, and uninstalls them "manually." I don't know why it isn't built in to the apt command.

Can we shut up about this now.

Bullshit. No one is flocking to Qt-based DEs just because GTK3 has a shit file picker.

Yes it does have the problem of not easily uninstalling meta-packages, unless you can refute what I said here >>56293928.

You can't remove gnome properly, so no.

Not being able to remove orphaned packages is a MAJOR problem

Also, Qt file picker is worse. KDE fixes it with KDialog

Viruses don't magically infiltrate your system, you get them by copying infected programs on it. Since Linux software usually comes from secure sources or gets compiled by yourself, viruses aren't a problem.
There are security risks, but a Virus scanner wouldn't help against them anyway.

Ebin gymnastics, smart package managers don't need to be spoonfed:
#yum/dnf autoremove gnome
#zypper -u gnome
#pacman -Rns gnome

Well. There's a difference between not knowing something and asking - and not knowing something and spamming "IT DOESNT WORK, ITS SHIT, BTFO".

>>56294410
Excuse me, allow me to interject. 'apt-get remove/purge/autoremove meta-package-name' doesn't work because meta-packages mark all their dependencies as manually installed. And by dependencies, I mean all the packages which the meta-package installs with it. When you remove, purge, or autoremove the meta-package, literally solely the meta-package is removed, and non of the dependencies are.

So by doing 'apt-get remove/purge/autoremove gnome-core' you aren't really removing anything. You need a stupid snippet like this:
apt remove $(apt-cache depends gnome-core | cut -f 2 -d ':' | tr '\n' ' ')
which will list all the dependencies and uninstall them "manually," so to speak.

Hello fglt
I am looking for a distro to use on a Pentium 4 ,512 mb ram PC.So it needs to be very lightweight. will be using it for browsing web, organizing my music collection with beet (why I am installing Linux) and torrenting. What do you guys suggest ?

>>
>>56294509
Puppy Linux.
>>
So, the main difference between distros are release schedules and package managers, right? It what ways is Pacman different from apt-get?

Also, is there any reason to use Antergos over an Arch installer?
>>
>>56295445
Pacman is slightly better than apt. I still don't like it much though. dnf and portage are the best ones. I'd honestly rather use debian than arch if I had to choose. Antergos is garbage. If you can't install arch, just install something else.
