Yes, my first computing experience was on CRT monitors, we even had iMac G3s at school in a dark computer lab, and I could see them.

It's about the contrast. Old people's eyes can't handle the difference between the bright monitor and the dark room, so they just see a bright square without being able to make out the text on it.
