Although I don't use gnome (I much prefer xfce + thunar) what's wrong with nautilus?
It let's you see your files, it let's you open them and it even let's you instantly search for files inside the file manager while looking sleek and being easy to use.
What else do you want in a file manager?
Nautilus is one few good things of gnome 3.
