There used to be little difference. We're kind of at the transition point now where it's more arguable. It still depends on the game but with more optimized coding and the advent of DX12/Vulcan higher thread count is starting to matter more. If you've got the budget an i7 is starting to be more justified, especially if you're considering VR.

in the end i'm sticking to Qt. turns out i couldn't run the .exe files because i was creating them "debug" and not for "release". also for the ".dll missing error" turns out i needed them in the same older as the .exe. using "dependency walker" for that now.

It isn't? Not being completely and utterly cucked by 2gb of vram and terrible bandwidth would be quite nice, desu.

the 480 seems to bench substantially higher as >>56271698 rightly points out.

I guess I'm just after advice about the general AMD experience. Plays.tv should hopefully be a decent substitute for shadowplay (I rarely record footage anyway).

Game support is the big meme I guess I've always been afraid of, but I don't really play games when they're new. I pretty much always wait until they're at least a few months old.

Couldn't tell you if that would work, but with the process you're using you're doing a double lossy encode. If you tell youtube-dl to download mp3 that just means it downloads the best quality then converts it to mp3. You want to download the native aac or opus file then concatenate then convert to mp3 if you really want an mp3 file for whatever reason.

I'm planning on upgrading my computer from an FX-8350 to an i5/i7 6600k/6700k, two 270x's in CrossFire to a single GTX 1070, and my shitty 23" TV to a Gsync monitor. I'm not doing it all at once though, because that's a hefty price tag.

What order should I buy the components in? I was thinking:

GTX 1070 > Gsync monitor > Skylake (maybe a newer generation if enough time has passed?), but one of my friends says that the FX-8350 would bottleneck a 1070 too hard for that to be worth it. Is he right? Should I do CPU first, then the 1070, then the Gsync monitor last? Or would the bottleneck not be big enough to notice/non-existent?

get a sim from the carrier, possibly cut it to fit in the sim slot, and then you're gucci. they should sell you a correct size sim card though.
>>56275256
your friend is barely right, but it will throttle in some games. not enough to be noticeable- games are largely cpu dependent. more than anything, make sure you have an SSD, and remember you're going to need a new motherboard for the i7, new ddr4 ram, and possibly a new power supply to support the 1070. i would make the cpu/mobo/upgrade last.
>>
>>56275279
I mean, can you just switch from an American carrier(tracfone) to a Mexican carrier(Telcel) with no problems?
>>
>>56275279
>and possibly a new power supply to support the 1070
From what I've read, the 1070 draws less power than my 270x's, so I don't think the power supply is an issue. Even if it is, I've got a 700 watt one so I can't imagine it'd need one bigger than that. I've got an SSD, and yeah, the reason I wanted to upgrade the CPU last was because of all the other shit I'd need to go with it.

Thanks for the clarification!
>>
>>56275296
ooops, didnt see it was carrier locked. you would be shit out of luck. tracfone isnt a postpaid carrier, so they have no obligation by the FCC to unlock their devices. just grab a oneplus one from swappa or something. theyre under 100 bucks and will be very fast.

If a gradient potential reaches a neuron that is in the hyperpolarization phase after firing an action potential, will an astrocyte at one of the synapses that already contributed then absorb as much of the excess neurotransmitters as it did during the repolarization phase?

...and should I use C++14 to simulate it?

They say you shouldn't let an SSD get over 85% full, what happens when it does? I accidentally fucked up this large torrent and sent it to my 60% full boot SSD, instead of my hard drive, and the download had to stop overnight when it got completely full. Did I just take off some life of my SSD, or is it just that you don't want it to stay over 85% full?
>>
>>56278177
presumably whoever said that is referring to fragmentation
fragmentation has a negative effect on both hdd's and ssd's, only the effect is different
on hdd's it amplifies head movement, which slows access
on ssd's it amplifies writes, to explain, lets say a 1M file is fragmented into 8 128K chunks, and the ssd has a 512K internal block size, ssd's can only write to a block by erasing the whole block first, so writing only 128K to a block will cause the whole 512K block to be erased/rewritten. so in all that 1M file causes 4M worth of writes on the ssd internally
>>
>>56278177
>>56278277
ps, for torrenting on an ssd, i highly recommend setting your client to fully pre-allocate the files, most have an option for this
this will help reduce fragmentation, by attempting to grab contiguous space beforehand
>>
>>56278177
going over 85% doesn't affect the life of the hard drive, just the performance.

Basically, the drive is broken up into blocks. Writing to a block marked as empty is easy - you just write the data straight to it. Writing to a partially occupied block requires the OS to read the data back, modify it then rewrite it which is much slower. The driver and OS will try to spread data around the drive to keep as many blocks free as possible, but if you fill all of them up partially then your drive will have to start filling them up fully.
>>
>>56278303
-- oh yea, also use a large write cache if possible (you want to increase the chance of overwriting full blocks over continuously updating the same blocks with smaller writes)
>>

I don't live close to any big electronic stores where I can try different keyboards and want to buy a mech keyboard.

Are the brown switches the go to for most?
I like to feel the click not have smooth keys all the way.
The sound is satisfying but I don't mind.

Heya /g/.
I wanted to take my first steps into the Linux world and so tried to install Linux Mint on an old Windows Me Laptop from a USB-Stick. Thorugh I'm already having a problem: The BIOS has 4 bootpriority options, Floppy, HDD, CD-ROM and none. Is there any posibility for me to run the installation from my USB?
>>
>>56278608
you probably need to go in the harddrive sub option in bios and set the usb to boot first over the hd
>>
>>56278631
That's the problem, I couldn't even find the option to boot from a USB device.
>>
>>56278608
That sounds like an old laptop. Mint proabably won't run on that
>>
>>56278603
you might as well just buy a switch kit and try them all out to see what you like and then buy one specifically
>>
>>56278665
is there anything in bios labelled as "hard drive group" or something like that?

if it's old enough it may not even be able to boot from a usb, might be easier to just install it using a cd instead
>>
>>56278589
Depends.

All USBs will get their connector fucked before the USB itself stops working.

Unless you bought a shitty brand one like PNY.
>>
>>56278677
Yeah, we have that thing as long as i can think. Well, too bad, thanks though.
>>
>>56278696
try lubuntu or xubuntu, those might be better options for older stuff. if you can't boot form usb, you can't boot from usb, it's not the end of the world, just burn an iso to a cd and boot from that. when you get in the live cd environment make sure the internet works at least
>>
>>56278689
At least I couldn't find anything similar. Guess I'll have to buy a CD-R then.

My situation is weird, I only have a netbook at the moment with chiclet keys.
>>

>>
>>56276349
That reduced it to 109MB with binutils (linkers and shit are necessary yo, thought it came with the distribution)
>>
>>56278903
No, I want to order a keyboard with the switches on. But since I don't seem to find any keyboards to try by myself I might have to buy something blindly.
It seems from what I have read that the Browns are the go to for most, but not sure.

I've had a dual monitor setup for a few years now and one of the monitors seems to be failing.

It's a BenQ GW2450, whenever i power on my computer, my main display turns on no problem but then this second display just stays black and starts making this weird repetitive noise. I've just been going into the screen resolution options menu and disabling the second monitor and re-enabling it, but that stopped working and now it takes anywhere from 3-10 minutes for the monitor to power on.

Is there any kind of fix or is it just destined to slowly die? I've tried different DVI cords as well.

Android """programming""" isn't really discussable. The API usually only lets you do things one way and if it sucks you just deal with it, so there's nothing to argue over.

hey /g/ i'm getting ready to build my first pc. What do they mean on the g wiki when they say "non-magnetic screwdriver"
is it fine to use a metal screwdriver as long as its not specifically stipulated to be a magnetic screwdriver? or do I need some carbon fiber shit or something
>>
>>56279391
Some screwdrivers are slightly magnetic to help pick up screws. Don't use those as the magnet may mess up the electronics.

Grab your screwdriver and touch some light screws with it to see if it sticks. If it does, it's magnetic and shouldn't be used.
