On the bright side, we won't have to worry about Google botnet controlling all the fiber lines.

On the shit side, it's still a pain in the ass to fight the communications monopoly mafia for someone to get access to the fiber lines.
>>
>>56266049
Google Fiber does deep packet inspection on all traffic
>>
I'm on Gfiber right now.
>>
>>56266192
The city of Provo sold Google an existing shitty fiber network that was failing hard. Purchase price: $1. At least in Salt Lake City it's brand new fiber runs throughout. But the Provo thing left a LOT of people with a bad taste in their mouth.

At the same time, a lot of delays that they're experiencing elsewhere, like with the duopolies putting up roadblocks like crazy, is exactly what happened when our muni fiber network 'Utopia' started its build out several years back. A large amount of the money that was supposed to go to building the network ended up fighting Qwest (now Centurylink) and Comcast.

So while Google is responsible for part of the failure, you can't deny that the telcos and cable companies aren't playing their part.
>>
>>56266049

Keep running your fiber in cities that have 0 tech industry and population demographics likely to have few users interested in fiber speeds.
>>
>>56266265

if google fiber came here (east coast australia) i'd gladly browse the internet like an angel for the rest of my life
>>
>>56266265
Are there any articles discussing this in depth?
>>
If they wanted to actually get subscribers they should have targetted places with lots of people. Stating the obvious here, but of course you aren't going to reach subscriber goals by supplying west bumfuck Kansas with fiber.

They're obviously just going to use it to datamine you but you can route your traffic to a custom VPN server on your host of choice.
It's fiber so the latency penalty will be nonexistent and maybe cut 5-10% of your connection off but who gives a shit when this lets you browse gigabit, host services, and seed in relative privacy at ludicrous speeds.
>>
>>56266326
The problem is infrastructure cost a lot, and even then local cities need to vote on it, Comcast has a lot of lobbyist so I think you can imagine how that goes.

Kansas City was the logical place to start.

Spainfag here. Enjoying my 300 mbit. Stay cuck.
>>
There are people who willingly send all their internet traffic to a data mining company? What could possibly go wrong?
>>
The important thing is that they managed to force cable companies to start offering faster service. Even if it's not gigabit, the fact I can get 300 Mbps in the middle of nowhere in Florida is pretty nice. Of course, I only pay for the 70 Mbps tier, but that doesn't stop them from giving me over 150 Mbps for whatever reason.
>>

>not getting Google Fiber and ssh tunneling all your traffic through your VPS's connection

Or better yet, stick to private trackers since torrenting seems to be the only thing they give a fuck about targeting.

Well like the other anon said, they chose Provo because it already had a fiber network in place, they just upgraded it.
Now they're expanding it up to Salt Lake which just went live. Northern Utah is expanding like crazy in the tech industry, it's poised to be the next Silicon Valley.
The NSA is here, Facebook is trying to build a huge data center near Salt Lake, plus we have Overstock, Adobe, Ebay and a bunch of other software and tech companies, so hopefully adoption of Fiber will grow, cause it's pretty damn nice.
