As I wait in agony for anyone to get a 480 in this damn country for my new PC I have started to look at other options.

Managed to find a 980 for a couple of bucks cheaper then a 480. Do i Wait or take the 980
>>
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/Vwtgbj
How is this for gaming? I will use a lot of storage as I hoard stuff
>>
>>56261915
A 980 will kick ass at 1080p and do respectably at 1440p. It doesn't hold up as well in dx12 though.
If you've been waiting a long time tho just buy the 980 and play some damn games.
>>
>>56262016

Well shit that was exactly what I didn't want to hear
>>
>>56262016
You should get a 650w or 700w power supply at most.

600W seems excessive for that setup.

>>56262013
For gaming, 32GB of RAM is excessive. 16 is perfectly adequate, and you'll likely never even top 10 or 12Gb used at once.

>>
>>56262468
Futureproofing, mostly. That and the modular ones I looked at were about the same price, +/- $5.
>>
>>56262519
Power supply is overkill unless you're gonna future proof like the other anon. Also, get a 1 or 2TB HDD, idk what the hell you're thinking 120GB is gonna do for you.

>>56262538
Gotcha, nothing else really comes to mind then.
>>
>>56262519
Yeah, pretty much what >>56262563 said. Get a lower wattage PSU. In terms of storage, trade out your liquid cooler for a noctua or something and use the difference in cash to buy a $50 1TB HDD. Or just spend the extra $50.
>>
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/mCFW3F

Gonna be using this for digital design, three monitors. Some gaming.
>>
>>56262563
I'm hoping that I'll have excess wattage if I ever plan to SLI or do... whatever else would significantly increase the power draw
Besides at $70 after rebate, it's overkill that costs as much as non-overkill
And that drive is actually for my laptop, so I can swap out the 500GB Intel 730 SSD that's in it now. I want an extra HDD for backups but I can buy that anywhere at anytime once the computers all together
>>
>>56262340
Oh shit wrong list

>>
Hey /g/, I'm currently using a 7950 graphics card. I like it, I've had it for 3 years now, it still plays games well, but it's always been loud.

I just want something a bit quieter. I was thinking about getting a 1060 or 480 soon, but I'm not sure what to get. M-Maybe someone can help.

I'm not going to be using SLI. I was leaning more towards Nvidia. AMD drivers haven't been a huge problem, but I've had more driver crashes with AMD in 3 years than I had with Nvidia in a decade.

What would /g/ recommend?
>>
>>56262519
>$200 CPU
>$100 cooler
Seems kind of an odd combination. Even for games, you'd probably get better performance if you just get 6700k and a cheap cooler. It also seems a bit odd to get a cheap SSD when you have $1200 budget, but then, apparently the difference between bad and good SSD isn't all that big in normal use, if you just use it for OS and often used programs or so I've been told.
>>
>>56261166
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/X3ZfvV
I just received the parts, I'm going to assemble it tomorrow.
How bad did I fuck up ?
>>
How bad I'm doing? I want a compact near-silent computer for work mostly, not many games other than Civ 5 @ 2560x1600

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/
>>
>>56262678
Is the 6700k worth an extra $100? I'm just playing games and processing audio, the h100i cooler is really just there to fill up my case honestly (not sure which aircoolers would fit in the mATX case though), and I have a better SSD ready to be swapped when the time comes
>>
>>56262664
I hope you made sure that laptop drive will work with what you have there.

>>56262668
If that 300W estimation is accurate, 550W also seems excessive, but idk if you planned on futureproofing.

>>56262670
I'd say nvidia, but I'm just some guy.

>>56262682
poweeeerrrr

>>56262732
Those parts are overkill for just "work" depending on what that is. If you're set on them, good call on liquid, that'll be much quieter.

>>56262743
If you have the extra $100, the 6700K is a solid gaming processor.
>>
>>56262793
>poweeeerrrr
?
>>
>>56262743
For audio processing, it should be good bit faster, since I'm pretty sure that can use all the threads. For video, it's not much better but it does show an advantage in many games.
>>
>>56262816
Your power supply is almost double the rating estimates for those components.
>>
>>56262859
620W is fine for his build. I went a little above original reqs for my build but I ended up adding 4 HDD's and more powerful fans about a year later.

Xeon's are SHIT when it comes to gaming, because most games don't use more than one core. Xeons are designed for workstations that utilize all of them for intensive tasks like rendering.

Remove the other 1070, get that i5 or even a 6700k, and an LGA 1151 mobo for starters. I'm not sure your friend was smart to trust you with an expensive build like that.

No they aren't. The IPC is the same and the clocks are only slightly lower. And all new games do, in fact, use multiple cores, even if they're bad at taking full advantage of more than one or two.

Thinking about it now, I probably won't use any 4k resolutions. 4k doesn't seem all that impressive unless you're using a huge screen where you could make out pixels more easily. And I can't really see myself making use of a hueg screen in my bedroom.
So probably will stick to with a 1080 resolution, but I won't turn down 1440 resolutions.
Also better framerates, which is nice. Although I don't see much point in going past 60fps.

So I used the choosemypc site listed on the wiki since I'm not sure what the hip shit is right now, and just made modifications based on other shit I read on LI. One of my concerns is just the case and cooler. My google-fu is probably weak but I haven't found a definite answer on whether or not they'll work together. I feel like the PSU might be a bad idea too, and I'm too retarded to understand why this is the case.

Trying to build a
>gaming
pc primarily though, which is why I'm going with SLI 1080s.
>>
>SLI 1080's for just gaming
>$2500 rig
holy fuck look at mr moneybags.
>>
>>56267047
Okay, first of all you DO NOT need two 1080s. I have a "gaming rig" and I never spend more than 600 AUD (so ~450 USD) on a card. SLI and Crossfire are both inherently worse than just buying one good card, since they introduce room for microstuttering, compatibility issues etc. Lastly (on the side of the GPU at least) you will not find a single game that's currently out that a 1080 cannot handle on its own, and there probably won't be a game that can push that card for another 3+ years.

Other issues
>core i7
Not needed, video games use very little actual processing power. Just get an i5.
>liquid cooler
Wouldn't recommend it, unless you live in a desert. Minimal temp reduction for both an increase in price and that slight risk of water damage.
>Seagate HDD
I've heard horror stories of their reliability, I myself just stick to Western Digital drives.

Everything else otherwise looks okay, you just seriously must hate money with those CPU and GPU choices.

Mid/Full sized Case Recommendations?

I've got a Fractal Design Define R4 case for my build, but unfortunately, some components went missing a while back and it's a bit of a pain to put back together, so I'm looking to look for a decent replacement and actually put it together properly, either full-size or mid-size. Here's my build-
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/vFYGqk

My limit is around 130 bucks, and USB 3.0 ports somewhere on the front. Other than that, I'm not sure what I want in a case. Don't really give a crap about water-cooling or anything of that level.

I decided to get some new RAM yesterday and I double checked the clearance on the DH 15's heatsink, so everything's okay there. However, I underestimated how much higher the fan would have to sit above the RAM, and it resulted in me not being able to put the case back on top so I've had to change the fan layout to what it is in the picture. Will this have any negative cooling effects or will it do about the same job? I'm wondering if it's worth picking up a third fan 120mm fan that'd fit over the RAM, what do you guys think?

EVGA make fine CPUs, and at 600W you won't be lacking for power unless you're looking at running power heavy cards in SLI whilst overclocking everything with a million fans installed.
>>
>>56268035
I meant NH D15, not DH 15. To clarify the fan setup, the center one is pulling air from the right heatsink and blowing to the left, and the left one is doing the same blowing it out to the exit fan on the case on the left.
>>
>>56263298
I remember reading poor reviews about their older SSDs. I don't know if their new stuff is good or not.
>>
>>56268035
>I'm wondering if it's worth picking up a third fan 120mm fan that'd fit over the RAM, what do you guys think?
Nope. The heatsink isn't dense enough for it to make a difference past margin of error.
You'd likely even see the same temps with just the middle fan.
>>
>>56267233
I use (and recommend) the Phanteks Enthoo Pro, if you want a cheap quality full size case.

>>56268072
You cannot get a new i7 (or even i5) + good mobo + DDR4 RAM with your budget. If your current CPU is ok with your typical tasks, keep it till you have a higher budget. If purely gaming, and you are fine with downgrading your multi-threaded power, you can get a modern i3+mobo+RAM with that budget.

>>56268035
>>56268252
Push/pull is most efficient. However, at most, you will lose maybe a few degrees of cooling. You are perfectly fine.

Is that so? So I'm guessing the current fan setup will also basically be having the same effect that the old one was having too in that case, thanks for the info.

On a similar note, in the 4-5 yaers that I've owned this case I've never really thought about the case fans or adding any more. It came with one front fan, one on the rear as the CPU exhaust, and one on the top above the CPU. When it comes to case fans, does adding more make any huge difference? I was thinking of adding one more on the top, and maybe one on the bottom to help with venting the GPU heat.

>>56268407
That is the CM 690 II, yes?

If your side panel has a fan slot, and you can add a fan there without interfering with the HSF/GPU (check this before buying), then that is the best thing you can do for GPU temps.

Adding more fans is fine, as long as you can control the speed and make sure that you are adding more airflow with minimal extra noise.

>>
>>56268449
It is yes, well spotted. It does have two fan slots on the side panel, but there is very minimal clearance between it and the HSF given how tall the NH D15 sits, so I guess that's probably a no go. However, the one above the GPU might be fine, I'll have to open it up later and check, thanks for the advice.

CPU-wise, you can get the 8350 if you like. AMD does not really have anything significantly better till Zen. We may see the RX 490 this year... maybe.

Yeah, I wanted to do the same as my older sticks were some Corsair low profile ones. Sadly where I live the choices for RAM were limited in good prices and they fluctuated wildly (up to double) for the same types of sticks just in low profile.

>CM 690 II used to be the best for the price, and /g/'s most preferred and recommended case by a HUGE margin
That's pretty good to know, I bought it back when I bought ASUS' oversized 680 and specifically needed a case that could accomodate its ridiculous length so it's nice to know that it's also a good case overall.
>>
>>56268548
Put the 560 back, see if that fixes the problem. IF yes, the the 1070 is faulty, or not getting enough power. If not, find out what you broke when you took the 560 out. Might have dislodged a wire somewhere.
>>

>When it comes to case fans, does adding more make any huge difference?
To a degree, yes.
Adding more fans will make a difference if you're not already replacing the air in your case faster than your heatsinks can dissipate heat. Most likely you won't see a whole lot of difference if you just throw more fans at it, assuming you already have decent airflow.

It's true that putting a fan right next to your GPU can help, though. This especially applies to non-blower style coolers with fins that are oriented so that air can pass through them from the sides rather than the front/back, see pic related as an example.
If you don't have a graphics card with a heatsink like this, you likely won't see much of a difference in temps by putting a fan right next to it.
>>
>>56268609
It might be your PSU then. You can also try booting into safemode, to check if it might be software related.
>>
>>56268548

I think that issue is called "not posting".

Its never happend to me before but try using DDU to completely remove previous drivers. Make sure your PSU wires are properly in the mobo and gpu. Try putting your 1070 in and wiring it up, but connect your display cable to your mobo and seeing if it boots up.

I am also severely disappointed that you chose a plebeian 6-core CPU when there's a perfectly fine 10-core i7 available.
And that you didn't choose full custom water cooling.

youir build is literally a meme nigga

if you don't plan to do LOTS of overclocking, save like 50-100 bucks and get an air cooler

likewise unless you don't ABSOLUTELY love that case you should divert your money towards something more relevant, try budgeting 50-80 bucks towards your case, it's a steel box, dude. take that money and get 16GB of ram

PSU is overkill, try 600-ish watts unless you know you're going to upgrade.

consider a 1060 at your price range. if it's a brand loyalty thing, ignore this.

The truth is i've been building PCs the same way you have and what eventually happens is you end up deciding you want to spend more and more money because you aren't fully utilizing your case or power supply etc.

So I've been working on this build for a few weeks and finally have enough money to buy it but now PC parts picker says my Gigabyte mobo isn't compatible because of a single SSD and one (1) HDD? Is this for real?

Gonna be used for gaming at 1080p, games like Titanfall 2 and BF1, gonna record gameplay with OBS and upload it to YT
Also gonna be used for playback to a 4K Tv (https://www.amazon.com/Hisense-50H7GB2-50-Inch-Ultra-Smart/dp/B00XMUU5KU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1472255535&sr=8-3&keywords=hisense+4k)
Already have a Air 540 and a 24" monitor

As for audio I´m gonna buy a Fiio E10K and some Fidelio X2 with a V-Moda Boom mic , as for speakers gonna use a pair of Fluance SX6 powered by a SMSL Q5

Any feedback?

You don't need to buy RAM that expensive, it makes no difference how much you spend on it, it will all work the same

Also use this (pcriver.com/tutorials/how-to-install-windows-7/) guide if you're willing to put a little time and effort into getting windows for free. The ISO image download links don't work anymore so you'll have to use this (mirror.corenoc.de/digitalrivercontent.net/) instead. After you have installed it use Dazloader (board.deioncube.in/showthread.php?tid=9) to activate Windows.

If you want Windows 10 just download it from here (www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10/) then activate it using Dazloader (board.deioncube.in/showthread.php?tid=9)

Look at actual real world prices dude, the higher clock speed versions are more expensive. It's not hard at all. You buy a modular wall plate and a few ethernet connectors from home depot. Match 8 wires to their color code and push it in with a little plastic tool. Put the plastic cap on it and snap it in to the wall plate. Screw the wall plate in to the wall.

Guise, I need some advice here. Pic related is my current rig that I built around 2012.
The 2gb of ram on my 680, are very limmiting these days and I gotta admit that it was a mistake to not go for the 4gb model (could have gotten one for almost the same price).

So what would be a good upgrade for my 680? I was thinking of going for a 480 (8gb) /1060 (6gb)? I'm still on 1080p but after seeing benchmarks of Deus EX: Mankind divided, I'm quite shocked that these cards barely pull above 30fps on ultra settings. Is it just an unoptimized shit game, or should I be worried that this trend will continue? Should I rather spend a few extra bucks on a 1070? I could also pick up a brand new 980ti (Zotac AMP) from a friend for 360.
>>
>>56284185
You card is actually fine for typical games. Obviously, the latest AAA titles with the best graphics are going to crush a 4-year-old card.

If you are not playing Witcher 3 and DE:MD, and your 680 is still good, keep it. If you want a new card, what is your budget?

And no, do not get a 980 Ti. A 1070 will beat it thoroughly, and the price will be close.
>>
>>56263498
I'm not really seeing any games bottlenecking my Xeon with the exception of Japanese dx9 games. My Xeon is only 2ghz too. New games certainly run good on it.
>>
>>56284259
Budget was around 300, but I don't mind spending another 100 or so. Cheapest 1070 I could find is around 420 in my country. The 680 is still fine performance-wise I know that, but, I also made the mistake to get a blower and the noise that thing makes on heavy load is killing me.
>>
>>56284263
How much did you spend and how many frames do you get on say, GTAV or FO4 on ultra?
>>
>>56284094
Lol. If it displays then it works you dumbass faggot fuck.
>>
>>56284307
My Xeon is an es so I didn't spend shit, but a retail version costs something like 1500 dollars.

Gta ultra I don't know cuz I use custom settings, but it's heavily gpu bottlenecked at 80 Fps by a Gtx 980. The cpu is perfect for gtav, barely breaks a sweat.

>>56284917
Don't get the FX6300 for gaming. This is coming from a 6350 user.

The 950 is an extremely low tier graphics card. For $200 you can get an aftermarket 4GB RX470, which will absolutely destroy the 2GB 950. You are going to have a hard time running new games at 1080p with the 950.

If you really want a budget build, wait until the release of AMD's Zen. It'll at least push Intel's prices down, and you can get a modern platform with DDR4.

Break up your 8GB RAM into a 2X4GB kit.
>>
>>56284971
