Settle a argument for me /g/.
I added a button on my raspberry pi that runs the shutdown command when pressed but my friend who is in tech support says that I don't need it and can just unplug it without it damaging the SD card.
Do I need it or not?!
your data *might* get corrupted if you do that. the button solution is safer
your SD card will not get physically damaged

This. It's the same reason you don't power off your PC by unplugging the PSU.

as long as you don't to it while writing to the card just pull the plug. the only time you will be writing to the sd card is while reconfiguring something or installing/updating, so it wont matter

Nice and simple... i like your simple button solution, OPie.
as long as you don't see the read/write led flickering, you can just unplug it
I hadn't thought of putting a button on it, but I like it

>friend who is in tech support
That should be your clue right there.

is that a man?

Explain?
>>56259810
you could just .ssh raspi -c shutdown

I usually do but this is running retropie and it is easier just to have a button do it.

Tech support idiots are idiots
