So today at work the guys said anyone who uses Linux in a VM on Windows is a Windows cuckold and that you should be running the Linux kernel on bare metal.

Windows anniversary update includes Ubuntu layer, but the added abstraction between waiting for the Linux commands to go through windows to the hardware creates inefficiency and points of failure. A VM means that a command has to traverse 3 layers before the output can be computed. If you want windows, use cygwin for your *NIX needs. Otherwise use Linux on metal.
