Why would anybody use an inferior alternative when there are better choices available? I don't see this in any other aspect of human life. It'd be like picking rotten fruit over fresh ones.

This only applies to distributions that require a lot of work to be functional. Out of the box distros are no different than Windows in terms of stability and just werking. Ubuntu and Mint are no more difficult than Windows. Judging by your post you've never actually touched a Linux box in your life.
