When wiping data, do you prefer shred or dd?

Shred can operate on block devices. I even bet it uses dd and udev/random under the hood for its actions.

cat /dev/null > is as good as dd and faster.
dd has the advantage of being able to stop start anywhere, even the middle of a file.

I prefer shred because it's built for data destruction and making sure it's non-recoverable. dd is nice, but I prefer to use it for creating partitions. It honestly doesn't matter either way but using a tool for it's intended purpose makes life easier.
also hdparm --security-erase for SSDs hands down
