Intentional garbage. Made with the worst hardware and in the worst way possible. These things are a good example of how W A S T E F U L our fucking economy is.

Has there ever been a netbook that was actually decent? How did they end up with such shit hardware while afterwards tablets and phones that are even smaller ended up being 20 times more powerful?

I just asked on the FGLT thread.

does anyone recommend the Asus Eee PC 1001PX?
Atom N450

any special distros recommended?

Look at the lids. The IdeaPad's doesn't look like ass, and that stupid barrel style hinge is better, especially if you get the extended battery.
>>
>>56242850
I like the idea
But they keep underspecing them to death. I haven't seen one I would actually buy, makes me sad.
it goes something like this

Small form factor, great I think laptops are too big for my highly mobile browsing and editing and a smart phone is too small and tablets lack that keyboard feel I love

i3 mobile sure, I don't really need an i7 for the basic stuff, but don't you dare go lower this ain't some embedded unit.

Last years embedded graphics, makes sense this is not my gaming unit and we are cutting costs

Small HDD, you know I am willing to pay more for a SSD even if it is just 120GB cause this is going to get tossed about and that drive head is going to die.

1 or possibly 2 GB of RAM, NO WHAT THE HECK? You need the RAM to compensate for the low CPU and bring the multi tasking power to bare, also newer OS's are bloating to the point I need ~3.7GB to run everything smoothly.

end result is will not buy, till some one fixes these things.
>>
>>56244980
you can get BIOS Locked ThinkPad's for that much.
It just requires some work to remove and you are golden.

replaced by Chromebooks. Seriously. CB's are dirt cheap and have stupid long battery life. That's the whole point of a netbook. To do stuff on the net.

An X220 with i7, 4 hours battery life and meh screen (stock one anyway) is just an undersized laptop in all the wrong ways.

I have no idea who would consider that a netbook with a $2000 price tag. It even says Ultrabook on the sticker on the palm rest.

I know netbooks are generally tiny cheap notebooks but I don't see why a 10" notebook wouldn't fall under the netbook category. Aren't netbooks essentially just sub-12" laptops (well I wouldn't even really count 11.6" but I know it does)

Netbook normally very heavily implied a small size, gimped processor, and cheap.

Over $400? Good luck selling that as a netbook. Maybe with a fancy 1366x768 screen or something premium.
Something more powerful than a Intel Atom or AMD *cat processor? Good luck keeping the price down, now you are $600+ and calling it an ultrabook.

I never remember anybody calling $1000+ laptops/ultraportables/whatever netbooks just because they had a small screen. Cheap was an important part of it.

The reason they died was because manufacturers were tired of the race to the bottom. I think they realized it was filling all the needs of too many people at too low of a price for them to get the profit they wanted. Chromebooks also kinda took their place but they were basically netbook guts minus the HDD and around the same price as a cheap netbook but sufficiently gimped they didn't feel it was cannibalizing their sales of more expensive products anymore.
>>
>>56242850

I have an old Lenovo S10-3. It is impossible to use because ancient. Single core Atom, 2gb ram, 5400rpm hdd.

Would an SSD make it usable again? I'd like to maybe try Ubuntu on it also.

>>
>>56260243
Between those 3 you'd want to pick the x120e.

But you'd probably want any other X class Thinkpad if you didn't need to get any of those 3. They're pretty old at this point.
