literally nothing wrong with headsets. if your other idea is to instead buy headphones and a desk mic thats laughable. Just because there are more components and more wires doesn't necessarily make things shittier.
My fridge has a freezer built in, you could make all the same arguments that its a shitty design and I should have bought a standalone fridge and a standalone freezer, but it would be just a ridiculous as this headset advice.

You can clip it to whatever you want I guess. Technically speaking, it's a lapel mic, so you're supposed to clip it to your clothes, not the cord.

I use the cheapest mic that was in stock at the local electronics shop. Works fine for talking to people in games or skype.

Unless you intend to do recording or something there's not much reason to get anything special.

Even TakStar HI2050 + ModMic combo shits on expensive gaymer headsets like a Sennheiser Game One/Zero.
Another example is the Beyerdynamic MMX300, it's a good headset but it's price is ridiculously stupid. A DT770 or DT990 + ModMic saves a lot of money.
