So you were sitting at home and butthurt you cannot afford a VR setup so decided to make this post instead huh?

I hope it made you feel better. I just am waiting to get to off work to enjoy one of my VR setups..sorry man.
>>
I just got a Gear VR (because it was cheap ish and I already had a s6) and it really is immersive and amazing, but it's also way too uncomfortable to use for long stretches of time (I thought I'd start using it regularly for porn because it's great for that, but it's just too fucking uncomfortable and I'm sceptical of how much more comfy other vr headsets are) and the fact that you need to give vr your full attention (you can't quickly look away from it and check something else like you would while using a monitor) really discourages it's use. Its gotten me excited af about the future of vr, but rn it's the kind of thing you use for 10 minutes at a time untill the novelty has worn off.
>>
>>56232322
Yeah the GearVR is not very comfortable. You can get 3rd party facepads that make it better for longer use for pretty cheap. The Rift and Vive are way more comfortable for long usage periods.

VR has many problems:
>high price
>no games
>poor input system

The inputs may be the most limiting factor. The fact that you can't see your input devices while the VR goggles are on makes more complex games (simulators) which would most benefit from VR a pain in the ass to play. Currently VR is only usable for shitty ten buck games which limit your movement space to a small room.

I see it becoming really good in a laser tag sort of way, in a large environment dedicated for it with friends is worth the 20 bucks admission, but home use is highly limited. Arcades and laser tag places should bank on this.
>>
>>56227350
Your mom is just a meme
>>
Been on /g/ for about a month now and this is the first time VR was ever even mentioned. In order for it to be a meme, it would have to be talked about. It's not, because there's nothing to talk about.
>>
>>56231717
Wait for fourth iteration
>>
>>56233081
>Arcades
>trusting retards with $1000 worth of sensitive electronics
Pick one.

It will get big in home use tho. We will go through a few iterations in the next few years, but the end result will be AR+VR and everyone will be wearing a spider-like mask on their faces.
>>
By the way guys, I'm not even christian, but the whole thing just freaks me out.

We now have NFC payment and some countries are already trying to move towards being cashless. Everyone has a smartphone, which may be in the future required as an ID and a wallet.
Then there is the whole AR/VR taking off.

>16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
>17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark

Checks out.
>>
>>56235974
Theres a roller coaster at six flags magic mountain that uses vr headsets. I dont think its unfeasible an arcade would make use of them.
>>
>>56232198
Unless the developers come up with something kinect-like as in as less cluttered as possible, while improving on the current movement detection performance, AND get rid of the ridiculously clunky tethers, you know, he's right. Now it's VR. Last time it was 3D. That wasn't even as clunky. Even before so, it was Kinect and such, also not so clunky. And so it goes...
>>
>>56227350
the reason it's a meme is because

NO GAMES THAT AREN'T SHOVELWARE
>>
>>56227350
I have a Vive. You don't need much space for it to work and the more you have the more immersive (no problem).

Being lazy?? Not an argument..

Price/ PC spec is the killer.

>laughs and fun
>"dude, this is the future indeed", "wow, so cool"
>next weekend they come again and we try some new games I bought in the Oculus store
>"eh, it's cool, but it feels pretty boring", "wow, nice, but I think we should play something multiplayer".
>fast forward a month later
>friends come over again
>me: "care for a play with the Oculus?"
>"nah"

And it's still getting dust. No reason to play alone whatsoever.
>>
>>56227350
>Muh immersion

People will pay through the nose for that immersion though.

Gamers will love it, a MMORPG in actual VR will take over lives.

It also has legit uses in training. VR will allow many skills to be taught via computer, the military already invests massively in simulators but commercial VR will push this every where.

Also porn.

I thought anaglyph 3D was cool, paid for a 3D monitor as soon as I could (D2343). In the end, the lack of a content killed 3D. Probably it's going to be the same for VR.

A more reasonable short term goal for the Vive at least would be to shave off more weight, improve the strap system and make the damned thing less front heavy for prolonged use

Their tracking system is fucking immaculate though, only improvement to tracking system would be to make it NLOS such that occlusion is impossible through practical means

Longer term goal would be to abolish the tether, improve the display tech and make it to extremely quick and easy to set up. Putting on the Vive feels like a commitment

Oculus have done a better job as far as just sliding the device on your head is concerned. The tether is still a nuisance however and their tracking system is adequate but a hassle to setup for room scale

All in one VR solution like sullon cortex or intel's project alloy sounds easier to achieve than wireless HMD. But is more prone to planned obsolescence since you'd have to buy a new HMD much like you would a smartphone. At least with smartphone VR you can reuse your old HMD.

Offloading computation to a PC wirelessly sounds far more effective if it can be pulled off. You won't have to worry about additional weight and poor performance, and potentially increase battery life

For the time being the tether is the least of my worries, since it rarely gets in the way especially after using the device for a while it becomes second nature to avoid tangling it by reversing rotation

Besides ergonomics the next big glaring issue is the Pixels per Degree and vergence accommodation conflict, and the lack of natural focus. This might be solved once decent light field displays become a thing

Putting all hardware problems aside, the bigger problem is the lack of engaging software that is not made on a shoe string budget. There is not a single title worth purchasing a HMD for. The technology is cool but once the novelty of over glorified tech demos wears off, you are going to want some meaty content that you would be willing to sink hundreds of hours into

If you said "No proper porn games", or "shitty porn games" I would agree.
behold, http://vrporn.com/waifu-sex-simulator-vr-version-1-3-new-update-new-scenes/

with a leap motion you can slap some anime tiddies. But Is it worth paying an arm and leg for?
It is cool to try but fuck no.

Best porn currently is rendered porn, couldn't find a single decent SBS porn video for Vive.

The scale is way off, massive turn off unless you like snoo snoo. I tried fucking with settings in whirligig to fix the scale but no dice.

SBS and 360 video is the epitome of gimmicky, basically 2D video playing for each eye slightly shifted for stereo effect wrapped around a surface. You can only rotate your head.

If you move your head (forward, backward, sideways) enough or move around the room the illusion is broken. With rendered it renders footage based on your position so you get a proper sense of depth.

Problem with rendered is that it is not photo realistic and limited to hentai and animated shit.

Hopefully someone will figure out proper 3D video technique similar to photogrammery, a la

Less the one american monthly wage.

I forget that /g/ is still like teenagers and students.

You go to /v/ and they argue over what 400$ console is better. Jesus just buy them all it's like 1000$ big deal.

If you earn 50.000$ a year you can buy a 2000$ Gaming PC, 1000$ 34" 144Hz 1440p ultrawide monitor, a 1000$ TV all the consoles and 50 games a year and you'd have money for everyday life just fine.

And you need to change that monitor maybe in 5 years and the consoles also in 5 and the PC you change the GPU after 2~3 years.

Jesus christ why is everyone here so CHEAP?!

Calm your tits matey, I already own a Vive and leap motion.
Obviously enthusiasts would jump at the opportunity to own one.

It would do more harm for average joes to toss a wad of cash and become early adopters only to complain about a lack of content. Early adopters always, ALWAYS get fucking shafted.

Unless your are excited about the technology in general or have more money than you know what to do with, It would be wisest to wait for the technology to pick up with a solid lineup and better hardware before buying into it

Otherwise you will be sitting there waiting for that dream game to come along by which time a new HMD and PC for same price or lower with better hardware rolls out. After which buyer's remorse sets in

I don't regret getting the Vive myself I still enjoy some content on occasion.
Only full game so far I am moderately excited about is budget cuts

Some content I have been enjoying recently,
>Bigscreen
It is pretty cool a bit like twitch in VR where you can have a virtual lan party with 4 people.

>Altspace
A larger group of people can congregate in different environments, there are some mini games and some locations allow you to stream video on a screen

>Janus VR
Despite looking crude in comparison, it is fairly lightweight. It is a VR web browser where people can congregate play mini games and chat. Interesting concept

Simulator wise I've enjoyed H3VR the most since it receives regular updates and enjoy squeezing a few rounds down some virtual firing range. The guns are fairly mechanically accurate and a lot of interesting experimentation is going on

Retro Arcade neon is pretty interesting as well, basically a arcade simulator with multiplayer. Plenty of mini games like bowling, arcade machines, game boys, SNES, air hockey, etc... all consoles can run custom emulators. It is still a work in progress but I love it

My buddy got one and I got to play with it a while ago

The technology shows real promise. I believe that we're going to see desktop uses, because of features like the camera's ability to project a representation of reality into the virtual space. I want to play Elite (or a similar sim) and have my hands projected into the virtual space with a physical HOTAS.

I think that having an ingame representation of the cable would also be a good play. That, or some kind of ceiling hanger so that the cable was out of the way.

when the headsets get cheap enough and the government removes workplace restrictions on VR, there will be applications in CAD.

Part of the reason we have 3d printers is just so stupid designers can see how big parts they have made are.

Scientist will use them to visualize complex 3D datasets. I have worked with molecular simulations and it is a pain in the ass to visualize on a 2D screen.

have you found a way to make the resolution bearable?
>>
>>56245145
I'm playing on an old af computer at 1280x800 with a mouse and keyboard and it's quite a pleasant game... The only slow spots are loading info from the open server. Feelsgoodman.
>>
>>56245145
You know, I have a triple 144hz monitor setup..1080GTX, Elite looks great on it..but the immersion I had in VR trumps the resolution shortcomings. It will improve, but until then, I cannot see playing it on a monitor again after tasting it in VR.

It is sad so many have not had a chance to try them and seemingly are so butthurt over their inability to access the tech that they make these threads. It is funny too. I mean, I don't shit on things just because I cannot afford them..seems to be a thing though for the kids here. Really odd though. It is like these angry kids would rather things that they cannot afford just simply not exist.

I can't buy a jet, but I do not wish they did not exist because of that But VR, these poor faggots here actually question why it even exists, is being developed..they cannot see how pathetic and childish this is...well because they are children obviously.

For you maybe. I've been enjoying VR and am satisfied with my purchase. This is a subjective thing whether something is "worth" it.

Otherwise, I agree.
>>
>>56232941
This is VR propaganda from someone who never used a vive.

The first two may be true, but the poor input system is false. you can see your controllers perfectly in VR. It depends on the game or software to make good controls, the controllers are very good. Also, all games have a blink or teleport method to move your play area.
>>
>>56246122

very good VR controllers = haptic gloves

you know I'm right.
>>
VR Really does suck at this point.

If the headsets were about 300-400 bucks I would have no problem buying them, but at the current price point they can go fuck themselves.

Have a 1070 system so no problem running anything, it just seems that there is no reason to do it apart from playing some stupid tech demos.

Until they actually figure a way to make an immersive game that doesn't require me to have a big open space, they aint getting my shekels.
>>
>>56244118
>Oculus
Enjoy your subpar VR experience with no motion controllers or play area. You should honestly cancel your preorder and switch to HTC vive if you actually want to experience VR.
>>
>>56246139
Part of the reason I'm so excited about VR right now is that Sony's PSVR lineup looks pretty tight.
>>
>>56246137
I'm not sure. My experience Is I really forget I am holding the controllers, and they have more buttons than gloves do.
I did see someone using a "Leap" for hand tracking. It looked pretty neat but I think I would prefer the motion controllers honestly.

The only thing I don't like is the grip buttons on them, and not many games map them to anything important if anything at all.
>>
>>56246139
Honestly the big open space is really nice. Once you try it out and use it, you would wish you had even more space. I know it's really hard to clear that much space out, and sometimes impossible.

I wouldn't say VR sucks, I would say it's like any new tech that is expensive and new before it gets better smaller and cheaper. If you have money to burn and want to check out some early cool shit pull the trigger get a vive. You'll be supporting the future development of it.

Otherwise sit tight and wait for a few revisions down the line, more games will be developed, newer units will inevitably release with improvements. It will possibly become more affordable too.

Why the fuck dont they make a first person shooter in vr where you use mouse and keyboard, but make it so you are in a mech suit so you can still have your look seperate from aim etc

What you aren't thinking about is the motion sickness and loss of balance you can experience in VR.
You would be better off just using a PC with something like TrackIR for head tracking and maybe multiple monitors or a really wide monitor.

I was experimenting with first person moving in VR yesterday, and moving at any decent speed made me lose my balance and feel really unpleasant. Blinking or teleporting never has this effect.

VR/AR won't catch on until

1. Cost is pretty much like buying a mid range GPU.
2. It does not require a mid range GPU and a huge box to run it.
3. It is not a fucking heavy lump sitting in front of your face. A little larger than diving goggles (not the old diver type the smaller and lighter snorkling type silly!).
4. Resolution is 4K. Better still 6-8K.
5. FoV is wider.
6. It doesn't require a shitload of sensors and a huge fucking room to use it.
7. You do not have to be standing up and waving your hands around like a mad man using controllers in order to do anything.
8. The games don't require you to teleport in order to go anywhere.
9. You are not required to bump into your own fucking walls.
10. Decent porn. Including options for sensory stimulation.

It's nota huge deal for me, most the time when run into problem I shrug it off because that comes with early adoption.
ED needs to get the resolution thing fixed, but it just doesn't bother me too much.

I have a HTC Vive since may 1st. I still use it almost everyday. If i had a better VR chair/desk to play overwatch than ill never take it off. Just stay away from Elite Dangerous its way too addicting in vr desu. as far as room scale goes its worth it, i know some games seem like tech demos but room scale is very physically demanding, your will feel high from the game and exercise. Everybody I invited over to try it is enthralled, plus being high in vr is pretty nice , especialy playing vr lan party/ pool with other vr players

Do you zoom in with a controller or just by leaning in?

I found the opposite to be true after playing room scale for so long. You have to have enough space for it to work fine.

Seated is a joke
