Try for a nicer 17'' or even a 20'' if you can, it deserves one.

That said, the low-end 640x480 ones aren't even all that bad, oldschool Macs were great at making tiny resolutions look bigger than they actually were for some reason.

>>56221470
Keep us blogged, are you trying 3.1.1? I think our systems are pretty much identical under the hood except for the 650's extra NuBus slot, if you have good luck I probably will too.
>>
>>56221518
>Keep us blogged, are you trying 3.1.1?
Sure, firing up my PowerMac to write the image.

I'm trying 3.0.1

Grew up with an IIVX playing Myst. Good times. Parent's sold the computer though.

Godspeed anon. Be careful when you install A/UX as it can clobber existing installations with no fucks given.

Anyway, I've ordered a SCSI2SD and when that eventually comes in I'll fit it up with A/UX

Yeah, that's me.

Is it 3.0.1 that's A/UX's last version? Maybe I'm confusing myself.

>>56221536
I had the opportunity to pick up a couple NASA-tagged Apple portrait displays a while back, still kicking myself for not doing so. I was too preoccupied trying to figure out how I was going to get the bunch of 90-ish pound 3270s next to them up a steeper than shit flight of stairs.

No, you are right, 3.1.1 is, but I'm gonna try the 3.0.1 first, was just easier to find.

>>56221542
>Godspeed anon. Be careful when you install A/UX as it can clobber existing installations with no fucks given.
I think I will get a second drive for it and just try it right now.
>>
>>56221588
Don't think it should matter either way, would actually probably be better since I think it's significantly lighter than 3.1

Sure you've seen this site already but I want to link it anyway, kind of interesting to surf through if you're on the fence about installing it on some of your hardware: http://www.aux-penelope.com/

Especially interested to see how the System 7 compatibility layer works out.
>>
>>56221607
Thanks!
>>
>>56221588
This will be of great help:
http://www.aux-penelope.com/aux_3.0.htm

You should be able to upgrade to 3.1.1 no problem (relatively)

And for drive partition configuration:

Got no answer in the previous thread, so i'm asking again.
>I need some help with this. It's a HxC Rev. F
>According to documentation, it should be able to emulate 2 floppy drives. But I can't figure a working configuration. Any ideas?
>I use it in my Amstrad PPC512 (XT).
>>
>>56221948
Bifibro?

Never used one, not very keen on floppy emulators, so it should display to the computer that it's actually two different drives connected on the same connector?
>>
>>56221894
They're available as hqx.sit files so you'll need to get them on your mac and binhex them into something usable.

Once you produce an disk image you should be able to disk copy that right into place.

>>56221948
Do you have any part of the HxC working?
>>
>>56221948
Have you tried both connectors? The way those floppy controllers know how many drives and what drive it is talking to is thanks to a twisted pair in the cable between the two connectors.

Also does it report two drives at startup?
>>
>>56221982
Hey bro.
As far as I have seen, yes. The PPC had already 2 floppy drives installed. therefore PC side settings should work. I can also choose different Images for a: and b: on the HxC. But only the Image for a: is shown (in a: and also in b:)
>>
>>56222020
>you should be able to disk copy that right into place.

The problem is the floppy drive on my Q650 is acting funny, it does not want to eject and also sometimes refuses to read or write floppies, I think I have to seriously clean it.

Maybe I'll hold off with A/UX for now, I have a good deal on a 18GB SCSI drive with a 80 to 50 pin adapter.
Don't want to destroy the 8.1 installation on the original one.
>>
>>56222039
Thanks for the hint, I will look it up.
>>56222020
It works but shows the same Image in a: and b:
>>
>>56222067
MIght want to look into setting up Basilisk II for this kind of grunt work. Takes alot of the shit out of trying to manipulate the BIN HEX files and writing them to floppy from a PC.

Beyond that if you're looking to fuck around you can look into ShoeBill and Machintosh Garden.

Yeah, I have a classic environment set up in Basilisk II too, it's great help, also a lot of help is OS 9 on my PowerMac, great to share files over AppleTalk.
My plan is to get A/UX and 8.1 dual boot up and running in the end, maybe another *NIX as extra.

I'll wait until I got all the needed parts.

Nice! Pretty sure this is the same one I use with my AS/400 machine. You can wire up a PS/2 plug for that keyboard (I just used a rj45 socket and donor ps/2 cable) and use it on a modern machine. Hey guys, I'm having trouble getting my good ol' Microsoft Mouse 2.0A serial mouse working on my Pentium I DOS/Win3.11 machine.

It's not really feasible to go full GNU anyway on most old hardware and actually be able to do anything useful with it, most free software worth using is bloated as shit and turning your old hardware into a doorstop that does the same shit you do on your main box but slower kind of misses the point.

Don't worry about it.

You may want to look through http://wiki.icomp.de/wiki/RR-Net but be warned it's going to be a pain and expense to get it online, would be cool though.

>>56238127
FreeDOS is fine, it was just built for use of a DOS for manufacturers to provide a boot environment for their utilities or as an "up to date" replacement DOS for older systems.

Though it's niche.

What computer exactly. There's some ports of NetBSD for 68k operating systems but you put out a pretty vague hardware.
>>
>>56238572
Unfortunately you're not going to have much luck.

Macintosh Computers (especially on the Old World ROM set) are incredibly locked down with their roms. To the point for any other operating system to be bootstrapped in, the system had to be first booted into System 6, or System 7, and then have that bootstrap A/UX or MacBSD

Long story short. No. Not for a Macintosh SE, and certainly not total FOSS due to the system architecture.

Also lack of having memory management unit in the processor fucks you too.

Just put system 6 on there, get an external SCSI and enjoy the system as a sweet retro games machine.

Look at computer recycling plants, estate and garage sales. Usually the best places to find it for cheap.

Craigslist sometimes but it's more then likely filled by people thinking they have a museum piece and trying to get $300-500 for it.

Your best bet is for emulation and then there's tons of scanned C64 documentation and books on the internet

Hey there /retro/acts,

I'm looking for pictures of old computer UI, anything wireframe-y, dithered to hell or otherwise old looking.

I would use the google-machines but I'm an idiot when it comes to naming old computers/OSes. Any query for "retro" brings up a shitload of crap that would rice your win10 to look like win7 (look gayz, so retro). And when I find screens, they're shitty 400*200 res jpegs (yes, I am aware old machines had small resolutions, but the images themselves are distorted as hell).

You can only imagine how much ground you've traked for me. I'm a win95 babby and didn't know the first thing about how to find this.
>>
>>56238106
How about 1541 Ultimate? I'm getting an C64 and that's the thing I will use for software and network connectivity.
>>
>>56238957
It's because how the ROM boots the OS, there's no real reason to make anything specialized for that if a few hundred kilobytes from OS 6/7 can do the job.
>>
>>56239269
The network connectivity in it right now is just to be an FTP server to transfer files to. Not for IRC communication.

Works fucking great as a 1541 drive replacement.

>>56239309
It was all copyrighted closed source code so alot of people just bootstrapped to save time and to avoid Apple's ire.

I'm working on a retro-UI for a personal project. I want it to look "authentic", I really wasn't around when these kinds of PCs were all the rage so I can't really do it without reference material. Although my first PC was a "dual-booting" ms-dos / win95 I have great respect for the very first UIs and what was achieved given the limited design space.

Who knows, if it turns out OK, I might even make an A E S T H E T I C memey website with the UI.

That one is still kinda okay but also doesn't look fresh anymore.

Apple hardware does age HORRIBLY.

Not necessarily the design itself, more like the materials they used.

It looks way more off than yellowed PC boxes.

Probably also really helpful to have customers more interested in the aesthetics than the actual performance - they will buy the fresh hardware sooner if the old one begins to age in appearance.

Sony really has a way with design

Putting old stuff to work is half the fun for me, you can totally use them for the same stuff they did when they were new, among other things. I see old gear used a lot for basic server tasks (DNS for example) or niche shit like music production.

Definitely an entertainment/hobby thing in the end though, they may still be alright for what they were made to do, but newer gear can be a hell of a lot more convenient.

and power efficient by orders of magnitude
>>
>>56253769
Depending what you're doing, generally yes, the hardware is more power efficient nowadays, but emulating a DOS game on a new system will draw more juice than actually playing it on an 286.
>>
>>56253769
I'm kind of tired of hearing this. It's not even wrong, of course, but /g/ stresses out about it and overhypes it so much. Unless you live in a place like NYC or something, power is cheap as shit, running old boxes that don't even consume that much in the first place is practically pocket change even in 24/7 roles depending on what it is. If you can't spend an extra $5-$15 a month for something you enjoy, I think you have more problems in your life than what kind of theoretical performance-per-watt you can get out of your system.

It annoys me even more to imagine that a lot of the people who spin out these posts probably still use incandescent light bulbs, ancient appliances and drive older cars, too.

>>56253826
Emulation of hardware that old can't be that bad, can it? I don't believe it.

>but emulating a DOS game on a new system will draw more juice than actually playing it on an 286

how much power does a CRT monitor use compared to an LCD (on say a modern laptop)? also, a modern CPU (e.g. Skylake) will barely be above idle when emulating a DOS game. but it's a good point, if i had a 286 i'd be tempted to measure its power draw when running a Leisure Suit Larry

a 286 generates tiny amounts of heat

>>56253958
286en shipped with pretty anemic power supplies and the chips themselves were atom-tier in maximum power consumption, you could run later iterations those damn things on AAs for 5+ hours if you wanted to
>>
>>56254033
I always wondered how much those things needed, easily in the 5+ kW range I would guess?

I think even my shitty Indigo2 still shipped with a 300W power supply, I know Octanes shipped with 650s.

one nice thing about old computers is that they are more likely free from NSA backdoor cancer like Intel ME (and AMD's equivalent)

It's not about the emulation, it's that new CPUs and GPUs still draw quite a load even doing small things, while the old counterparts don't even take as much juice on full load.
Of course, something like an ARM chip might only draw a few watts running DOSBox.

If you're going to enjoy a DOS game on a modern computer you want a CRT anyways.
Also, you can just hook up an LCD to any old shitpox.

Kind of useless point.
>>
>>56253958
The floppy drive and hard drive motors would be drawing more power than the actual 286. Pop a CF card in there and it's as lightweight as an Atom netbook.

It's a useless point in an argument about power consumption.Specially talking about systems and not monitors.
>>
>>56254416

if you're a retro-fag, then the right monitor is an important part of the experience
>>
>>56254603
Yes, but that's not the point of discussion about power consumption of old systems.
No matter if using an old computer or new one.
