So if I'm using a device with CM what does that make me? I feel special. And how is a Nexus with CM somehow unavailable to the average joe? There is a nice GUI tool for wangblows to unlock bootloaders, flash recoveries and root with SuperSU on Nexus phones. Takes like 10 minutes and it's so easy a 6 year old child could be taught how to use it.

It depends. If you're a facebook pleb you're better off using a stock device. If you have the common sense found in most human beings over the age of 14, using a jailbroken/rooted device or a custom ROM isn't bad at all. My mother uses a Nexus 7 tablet with CM13 and she hasn't had any problems. Updates are always smooth and reliable, more so than stock since unofficial support is much longer. And if an attacker gets physical access, it's all ogre no matter what kind of device you're using.
