General thread to discuss the building of PCs.
If you want to build a PC, get in here.

This pizza laptop better only be used with Tor and other IP masking software for CP purposes. Or just a dedicated pizza ordering laptop.

Anything else and you've wasted a good pc.

How often should you be upgrading the motherboard?

When the capacitors of the motherboard are specified as being polymer, does it still matters if they are Japanese or Taiwanese?
>>
>>56209710
As infrequently as possible. Like, when you need to replace all components of your PC, or only when it gets completely unusable due to obsolescence.

People needs to replace motherboards when they wear out, not due to performance, normally.
>>
Use the op copypasta damn it.

I don't know where the fuck it was, I needed a /pcbg/ so I created one.
>>
>>56209799
Did you try finding an archived /pcbg/?
>>
>>56209883
No, I was bored of waiting more than 10 hours for a /pcbg/ being created, so I got angry and created one right away.
>>
Worth giving a fuck about Skylake CPUs or should a 4790k suffice for the next couple of years?
>>
>>56210373
You'll be fine
>>
>>56210373
How.much overclocking can you get out of it. I've the non k version of that cpu that I got cheap and just wondering
>>
>>56210646
Skylake has maybe a 5% performance increase, uses a little less power and supports ddr4. If that doesn't sound impressive, don't upgrade. Honestly you can get 5+ years out of that haswell chip easy.
>>
>>56210816
Yeah I was hesitant because LGA 1151 mobos have stupid prices, adn apparently the 6700k is neck to neck with the 4790k. I guess I'll just keep my z97 mobo and upgrade from my i5.

what are some common mistakes that people make when building PCs? i saw someone get upset in another thread for putting two sticks of ram on one side of a mobo, is that valid? what are some other instances?

Wrong , this here is the only real PC Building General. That another you linked is fake.
>>
>>56212343

How would be that?
>>
>>56212550
There would be one stick in each channel, so it couldn't run in dual-channel mode.
>>
>>56213002
Irrelevant, dual-channel does no makes any difference for common users.
>>
>>56213029
It's a small difference, but there is a difference. No reason not to run it as dual-channel.
>>
>>56213167
It's small, so there is no reason to worry about running as dual-channel, or not as dual-channel.

any suggestions? haven't built a pc in 10 years and im trying to keep it under 2k
>>
>>56213268
looks ok. 850W might be overkill, and I'd rethink MSI for the GPU but should be fine regardless
>>
>>56213268
Get rid of the sound card, get a pcie wifi card, get a case without a window.

You don't need the 12g tube of thermal paste. The cheaper 3.5g one will be just fine, and you probably won't use that one up before you lose it.

You don't need that powerful of a PSU.

I'm not sure about the keyboard and mouse.

why does /g/ hate windows?

>>
How much do CPU's actually bottleneck modern games ?
As long as the CPU has at least SSE3 it should handle out fine by my logic.
So 4 core Athlon at 2 Ghz is around 50$
+ 30 $ AM1 mobo and a gtx 970
should total to around 320 $
Is that worth it ?
Alternatively an athlon x4 860k would add about 150 $ to it due to the mobo socket

SteamOS is terrible, linux has no real games.

a regular linux distro would be better than that,
but still falls way behind the library / user experience of steam on windows.

you would simply be wasting your time.
>>
>>56214864
Buy a used workstation instead and add a new GPU.

Make sure it's at least a sandy bridge CPU (2xxx), not SFF (small form factor) so you can actually add a full-size GPU, and uses a standard ATX power supply.
>>
>>56215603
>linux has no real games
It even has Steam, fucker.

That's why it's a gaming distro, not a every-purpose distro.

He would be playing games without wasting all it's freedom with Windows 10.

Ok, so the reason I have never had a decent gaming pc before when I was living with parents is I didn't really have the space to accommodate. I have moved out and so I now have room.

I have money and I know how to build a computer. What I don't know though is what is the latest and greatest on pc parts since I haven't really been following such news. Like I really don't know at all which brands are considered best right now and shit. I'm also trying not to fall for any memes.

Swap mainboard for ASROCK
Swap ram for 32GB (2x16GB) 2133 kit.
Don't buy WD buy a hitachi

So what parts do you already have? And this is one reason cases with windows are bad, because nocuta makes good coolers but you decided against it because the fan colors would clash with the rest of your shit.
>>
>>56219889
This is just a build I threw together because I have it mostly rounded out.

I was going with a noctua 17(or something) but heard that thing is huge and might not fit for this case. I did see some videos of people using the noctua fan with the case, but worried it it not work out with my motherboard.

I just want something that works better than it looks to be honest.
>>
>>56210373
I always feel like people that ask this question are stuck in the past, same people which still overclock their CPU.
>>
>>56219956
Motehrboard height won't make a difference. The only thing you need to worry about with motherboards and CPU cooler clearance is if your RAM has fuckhuge heat spreaders.

It's not entirely like that, I suggest you to practice with an old PC, take it apart and then rebuild it, practice thermal paste and so on.
You sound dumb, so you might fuck a 350$ processor up quite easy.
>>
>>56218147
Using dual-channel memory IS changing the world for the better. Tasks take a tiny bit less time which means the CPU will be used for that much less time which means that much less electricity will be used.
>>
>>56213425
Why the fuck would you not want a window? Unleas you're shit at building there is no reason.

Because the $15 you saved by not buying the window can be used on better parts or some booze.

From what I can tell, it looks like you're on a budget. That said, why not opt for the Skylake i5 6600K, which is $230, and just go with LGA 1151. You'd probably save some money you could put into a better graphics card.

>>
>>56220572
I'd opt for 1440p, honestly. Your build can handle it, and you'll enjoy the extra real estate.

As for sound, an external USB DAC would probably give you greater flexibility in respect to when you purchase it, as well as not taking up room inside.. Using stock motherboard audio just isn't the same.

>>56220607
Untrue. Newegg alone has 758 LGA 1151 motherboard listings, and considering the price of the one in your list ($80), there's plenty of variety in that price range.

The 1070 is a great card. You can get one for ~$425, while the 1080 is $650-700. The performance difference is only 20% at 1440p.

I would get 3000mhz RAM (as the other anon said, make sure that your mobo can support it). It's the sweet spot and doesn't cost but a few dollars more. You'll get another 5% framerate boost.
>>
>>56220877
A 20% difference sounds like a lot m8, plus like I said I got enough dosh to shell out the cash and not gib a fug.

As for the RAM the mobo I picked can support up to 3600.

So fine, hows this?

What are the selling point differences of motherboards? Made a thread about it yesterday which had replies, but no real answers. Is it really just slots, cap quality to ensure lifetime and features such as fan control, WiFi, audio and what have you? With CPUs or GPUs you have architecture and frequency in MHz, shaders and so on which you can generally use to tell how fast a component is. Is there no such thing with mainboards? Does the chipset not make a difference in performance? Is it as simple as "your hardware fits in the slots and its not broken"?
>>
>>56222393
theres also VRMs (voltage regulation modules) which vary in quantity and quality between motherboards. These can affect stability and overclocking potential.

I am looking to work in 3d modeling/animation, programing, light gaming, Adobe Premiere, CAD, and some other random nonsense. Please be as mean and judgmental as you want but some feedback would also be awesome.

>>56222312
Finding bottlenecks is a little complicated but what you should definitely try is the performance monitor from windows to log you CPU % and GPU-Z to log the GPU. Now if you timely compare them you can tell which one has more workload. If the CPU is above 80% an upgrade to the GPU wont do much good because before the card can render the graphic the CPU has to do its cycle. After that it contacts the GPU. So if your CPU is high in use, upgrade this one first. If your video card is in high use also, you will need to upgrade both but the CPU itself will benefit slightly from an upgrade in certain tasks, upgrading the GPU will only be bottlenecked.

Can anyone tell me the importance of RAM frequency, its effect and how to monitor it efficiently? Perfmon?

Also relevant to my interest. I have 1333MHz 2x4GB sticks currently and 2 slots free on my board. I could upgrade them with another dual channel for only 40€. Is it worth it or should i get RAM with more frequency or other quality, in this case, is 8 quality GB enough difference or should i still aim for 16? And how big is the jump from DDR3 to 4, its not an option since it would require new board and CPU but just out of curiosity, will you need DDR4 in the near future or is the DDR3 still sufficient in the lower high-tier?
And how do i really find out if i need more?

To drive the display I need a DP spec 1.2 or higher output from my computer.

By law, any product sold have 3 months of warranty. The manufacturer of a motherboard warrants 12 months of warranty by itself. But the model I want has only 1 unit being sold online on the online store I use. This unit does not have any manufacturer warranty (I don't know why) anymore, just the seller 3 months warranty.

Should I buy it? I believe that even 1 year is a too short warranty, I'm afraid of buying this motherboard and it stopping to work in just 3 months...

There is an AMD motherboard model being sold online with support for DDR3 x2 8GB. I know 8GB is enough for me by now, but how can I find until when (for how many years) this amount will be enough?

I'd like to get a non-k 6600 with a Z170 motherboard and 2666 RAM. The reason for this purchase is because the H170 motherboards don't support anything higher than 2133 RAM. Yay or nay?
>>
>>56235175
May as well pay the $6 more plus maybe $25 for a cooler for the k.
>>
>>56235175
why no 6600k then? it's a measly $10 usd more. maybe your feelings on OC-ing will change in a year or two.
>>

I really no nothing about it. How easy it is. When do you do it? Right off the bat? Or when your computer starts to show age.

Yes.

Go check your local stores for graphics cards and you might get lucky. I went down to best buy for shits and giggles and found they had 3 or 4 1080 FEs at MSRP.

It doesn't cost anything. Use MS bandwidth, not someone else's

Wrong motherboard. You need a z170 chipset to overclock. You need DDR4. What happened to the SSD? Get a 1070 if you can afford it.

>>56235719
Looks fine.

I don't have any experience in building a PC, but could anyone here give some suggestions to customization's to this PC? (link below) I wanted to get a PC for gaming since my laptop is to weak to play most games, like DS3. I wanted to keep it under $600.

I don't need it right now, I'll get it later.

But it cost 160€ more than the GTX 970

on the price? I saw somewhere it was a good deal?

Is there any reason to spend an extra $100 on an i7 processor over an i5?

Yes, for heavily multi-threaded applications.

No, for lightly threaded applications (games, BookFace, light everyday work).

If I grab everything from the Excellent tab plus an i7 6600k could I run stuff like the FFXIII trilogy at 1080p/60fps?

Meant 6700k
>>
>>56236928
Going by the recommended specs on Steam, you should be getting 60FPS at all times. But reading reviews, it seems that it is an ok-ish port, so performance is not guaranteed.
>>
>>56236928
I was getting 60fps with a 2500k at 1080p

My first ever build, did I do good /g/? Gonna use primarily for gaming and to try and teach myself programming. Also should I install Windows 7 or 10?

At the moment, I only have the motherboard, case, keyboard, and hard drive bought. I'm slowly saving up money with a part time job I have so I'm just buying piece here and there.
>>
>>56237051
Why are you getting a less than professional edition of an OS? And is that budget stuff because the clock on the RAM is pretty slow.

The PSU seems a bit much for that build. I would suggest getting something a bit cheaper. Also, the RX470 is a $180 card. If you have $210 for the GPU, wait till GTX1060 3GB benches are out, which should be very soon.

>>
>>56237081
The OS is a placeholder I just picked a random version of Win 10. Do you think I should do 2400 or 3000 clock speed?

>>56237115

I was thinking I would need a PSU with high wattage so when I want to upgrade it later on I wouldn't need to switch it out. If the 3GB model comes out in Sept I'll switch it out.
>>
>>56237179
Any reason why you're not getting one of the GTX 10xx series?

>>56237207
Ah gotcha. I'd say 3000, that's pretty much the sweetspot when it comes to price vs speed.
>>
>>56237233

>>
>>56237207

>>
>>56237297
At least get a RX470/480 or something, don't get a 950 since that shit's old and wasn't fast even when it was new. You're seriously better off saving more money than getting a 950.
>>
>>56237298

Maybe I'm just retarded I couldn't find it anywhere, but if it performs just as well as the 480 might as well wait.

Installing win7 via usb on skylae is pretty damn difficult, given that it's vno longer important. Also the supernova NEX line has some poor reviews. G2 or gs is where its at.
If you want to save $20 tho, i recommend the seasonic m12ii 620watt. It's only bronze, but its a stable unit, fully modular with all black cables. Can't be beat in the price tier.

Hit the power button after unplugging a few times to get rid of left over power in the system. Wear an anti static wrist band(recommended) or just touch the radiator(my actual practice) to ground yourself

Dude honestly im not an expert on this topic but acting careful is a given thing, right? Besides building machines i sometimes wipe the dust of my hardware, swap out parts, replug things and the likes. I dont know what exactly you would want to do, but as long as you dont use magnetic screwdrivers or similar static or magnetic things, are grounded and touch the parts that are meant for touching (back and sides of RAM/CPU for example) you should be fine. The guts arent animated monstrosities that will try to end your life by electrocuting you if they get a chance to. Act delicate and soft

Hello fuckers. I've got this setup right here. Just replaced my EVGA GTX 470 with the 670 that's in here right now, but shits old as fuck so I'm thinking about saving up for a real upgrade, as I havent done shit except added more ram and installed a heatsink the past 6 years.

If I decide to upgrade, should I replace everything or just OC the i7 870? Would it be advisable when upgrading to 1070/1080 without actually swapping mobo+cpu when it's this old?

ASRock Z170 Pro4 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB

MSI GeForce GTX 1070 8GB
EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
Acer K222HQL 21.5" 60Hz Monitor

OS (win10h), WiFi, HDD (couple of SSDs), CPU (i5 6600k), Cooler already decided.
I'm still trying to narrow down to one build to buy, and second guessing whether I've missed better (or cheaper/good enough) choices.
>>
>>56241957
>HDD (couple of SSDs).
Rarely is there ever a reason for this. In fact, it's usually the other way around. Why do you have this setup?
>>
>>56241957
>Crucial 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory
1) IIRC that RAM doesn't come with a heatsink, might want to get something else
2) 2x4gb will be better than 1x8gb

Also, fully modular power supplies are always nice, especially if you're concerned with aesthetics, as you can order your own custom cables.
