I found that using ffmpeg's lutyuv for gamma correction preserves shadow detail better than mpv's built in gamma correction. I also made it do blackpoint/whitepoint adjustment with little additional CPU cost, which is much more intuitive than brightness/contrast adjustment.

Eg.
YMIN=257; YMAX=3761; BLEVEL=120; WLEVEL=3900; GAMMA=1.3; mpv "--vf=lavfi=[format=yuv420p12,lutyuv=y=pow((clip(val*(($WLEVEL-$BLEVEL)/($YMAX-$YMIN))-((($YMIN*$WLEVEL)-($YMAX*$BLEVEL))/($YMAX-$YMIN))\,$YMIN\,$YMAX)-$YMIN)/($YMAX-$YMIN)\,1/$GAMMA)*($YMAX-$YMIN)+$YMIN]" file.mkv

Pick the right values of YMIN and YMAX for you colorspace, these are correct for yuv420p12. BLEVEL and WLEVEL can be moved according to preference to trade off dynamic range for clipping.

Any way to adjust ffmpeg filter parameters at runtime?

Okay, I just installed mpv last night to watch a really high quality rip of Fury Road because anytime I tried to watch it in vlc, something would go wrong... Crash, video and audio so very slightly out of sync but just enough to be perceptible and infuriating, etc.

pacman -Syu
pacman -S MPV

Pure fucking bliss straight oob.

So my question is this: are there any settings or tweaks you guys recommend on a 16:9 display (I mean 1600*900 ... Doesn't get more 16:9 than that) for high def video enjoyment? Most of my files are 1080p because I watch them on my TV, but I'm wondering if there's any cool settings that the average normies would never know about that will knock my socks off?

That's really clever. Excellent way to get more people to use mpv and drag it out of obscurity.
>>
guys how do i seek frame by frame on mpv?
>>
>>56210926
The most important MPV feature, which no other player has, is
video-sync=display-resample
. For best results set your monitor's refresh rate to an integer multiple of the video frame rate. Don't give up if your monitor doesn't report such a rate in the EDID, it still might sync with a custom modeline! And if it really doesn't, and you can't afford a different monitor, in that case and that case only, it is acceptable to turn on interpolation in an attempt to hide the problem as much as possible.

Do you niggers know how I can pipe data from wget to mpv?

Right now I'm doing
wget http://snip/file.mkv --user=user --password=password

mpv file.mkv

Is there a way I can use a command like

wget http://snip/file.mkv --user=user --password=password | mpv

So I can play the file directly into mpv without needing to store the data on my local disk?

Save as osc.lua in scripts folder and add no-osc to mpv.conf and make sure you have it on bottombar layour.

Also I copied some shit off /g/ that makes it change color based on filepath/url. If you go on youtube it's red. You can add your own sites, or change it so if you play something that has anime in the filepath it's pink. The color is in BGR format (i don't know why). If you want to turn it off just ctrl+f youtube then delete the whole paragraph.

No idea what OS you're running.
In case of the typical Windows:

hwdec=auto
vo=opengl:backend=angle

If that doesn't work, change angle to dxinterop. On Linux all you need is hwdec=auto.
>>
>>56226094
>backend=angle
>dxinterop
What does that even do?
>>
>>56225649
You don't have to change anything, apart from the keybind, if you want.
>>56225899
Pretty sure dxinterop works better on windows, but than he will have to use hwdec=auto--copy instead.
>>
how can I rice low quality streams? does mpv deblocking?
>>
>>56226125
The Windows OpenGL driver is less than stellar. This basically translates the OpenGL calls into DirectX calls, angle being DX11 and dxinterop being DX9 as I recall.

>>56226147
You can have native dxva2 for dxinterop if you're not doing any special scaling. But perhaps auto-copy is better yes.

hwdec=auto-copy
vo=opengl:deband:backend=dxinterop
ao=wasapi
audio-channels=stereo
osd-font='Segoe UI'
sub-text-font='Segoe UI'
screenshot-directory=~~desktop/

I recommend trying this.

3 hours later I finally managed to solve this, sort of.

the lua script gives the window a border. However, since it's impossible to force the window to minimize via mpv/lua, I had to then make a c# script(which is called from the lua script) that looks for the active mpv window and then minimize it once the no border function was activated. then, when it gets maximized(by observing the property), the border is removed.

fucking hell

When I play a youtube video with mpv does it count as a 'view' for the content provider?

When I used to view videos with my web browser, I always blocked the ads. I am not familiar with how ads are served on YT. I know they aren't part of the video stream because they aren't there when I stream it with MPV.

If I wanted to support a content provider with "ad views" could I do that with MPV?

There was a fork for Android things that's abandoned nowadays, and the opengl renderer got OpenGL ES support
Some anons actually got mpv to run on Android from that old fork
>>56226224
>how can I rice low quality streams? does mpv deblocking?
You can use any ffmpeg filter, or some vapursynth script
Otherwise the debanding included by default in the opengl-hq renderer deblocks as a side effect, and it does it pretty well
>>56233424
Pretty much this, it works on my X60 (forcing OpenGL 2.1 in the enviroment variants) just fine
If you got something with shittier graphics than the Intel 945G that X60's have, then you should really upgrade to something newer, or use the xv renderer (which should be selected by default in such cases)
But the xv renderer is legacy and will be eventually removed, probably quite soon
Oh, the 945G and some other old Intel iGPU's only support OpenGL 2.1 on *nix, so opengl won't work in Windows, also some distros disable 2.1 for this old chips
>>56234379
opengl-hq:icc-profile-auto, display-resample and a script to change refresh rate

>Reccomended gpu
Anything with HD4000 or better from Intel should be good enough unless you're into placebo settings, which as the OP says can require up to Fury X and Titan X, in general AMD hardware has better mpv performance as long as the drivers work fine
On the AMD side most APU's should be fine
Nvidia anything past a 750 should be fine, though something lesser/older might work too, iirc there was some anon with a 9800GTX running mpv with decent settings just fine
Oh, if you want 4K or 120 hz then you will be looking at a 7970 at least
Though I could do 4K30p on my Intel HD3000 with plain opengl
>>
>>56236438

The idea was to see the ERROR output retard, not to play a fucking file. THINK. USE YOUR BRAIN AND THINK. If mpv doesn't start, where do you go to get an error of some kind, open it in the terminal and see what error you get. By MPV giving me its help return and saying it cant play anything IT TELLS ME ITS WORKING. If I didn't try to start it in a terminal with or without a file I would have never fucking known that it was missing a library and would never have reinstalled the library and fixed it.

what do?

When I switch to MPV, video continues, but as soon as I switch back to the game, the video stops

I have a question regarding the reclock function (display-resample) It's supposed to speed up a 23.9xx fps video to 24fps, correct? mpv then proceeds to alter the audio so it doesn't sound fucked up. My question is why do the stats still report the video running at 23.9xx fps? As you can see I'm running the screen at 72Hz but I still get some stutter/judder.

The Bastion video from Overwatch was released recently on youtube and it's a 24fps video (not 23.9xx) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=to8yh83jlXg . I set my screen to 72hz and it's flawlessly smooth, no stutter or judder whatsoever - isn't that the job of display-resample?

>What's good using openal compare to wasapi? Sourceforge has that too..is it worth to use
The only reason I used it was because it has the OpenAL hrtf, nowadays I use sofalizer
According to the mpv docs the OpenAL renderer is quite slow in multichannel audio, though on most systems it should be unnoticeable in my experience

>MadVR is more advanced than mpv but yes it's closed source.
It's not, and it won't ever be, it's quite limited by the DS framework and already does lots of hacks to get around it's limitations
Madshi should just create his own media player from the ground up, he might even get Emby/Plex to license it from him, specially if he adopts a lot of DRM features

Can you you bind scripts to hotkeys? Specifically, I want to set videos to automatically loop by default, but then use autoload.lua to go to the next video after pressing a key.
>>
>>56252303
mpv.conf

loop-file=inf #infinitely loops the file

input.conf
n playlist-next; write-watch-later-config #Next file
b playlist-prev; write-watch-later-config #Previous File

This does not uses autoload.lua
Change " n " and " b " to whatever you wan as your keybind

So what's the best backend for windows? ANGLE makes the render and present values to go red (see >>56249880). Just tried win and dxinterop and I get white values. Which one should I use, or does it make no difference?
>>
>>56252454
Use whichever works better, I highly doubt ANGLE is better than dxinterop on windows.
>>
>>56252353
I wanted to use autoload because that way I don't have to launch mpv from a commandline and create a playlist every time I want to play something in a different folder. It's the one piece of functionality that I miss from MPC.
>>
>>56252609
But you still can use autoload.lua
it will still load your episodes, you are literally just skipping to the next or previous file?

You don't have to launch it from the terminal.

If you want to do it without autosub.lua (which you don't have to)

Shift + drag the file to the mpv window.

You can also do this with links whenever you are using youtube-dl.
>>
>>56252454
If dxinterop works, use it. ANGLE is a shitty hack
