Why do YOU use Linux?
>>
>>56206894
Server usage and because it's free as in freedom.
>>
Because my time is too valuable to wait for windows updates to complete.
>>
>>56206894
Because I am tech literate, and tech literate people are supposed to use Linux.
>>
>>56206894
I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

I'm a financial advisor and a tax accountant, if I am able to manage using Linux, pretty sure the rest of /g/ will have no problem with Libre Office and WINE
>>
>No "recommended" updates or settings that serve someone else's interest.
>Advanced settings may be behind a level of friendly GUI tools, but they're not actively hidden away.
>The developers try to build the best system they can, not the most profitable one.
>The release/update schedule is transparent, consistent and reliable.
I don't have to install all my programs from third party websites, update them seperately and disallow all of them from installing additional stuff I don't want, but which they want on my PC.
>It runs old Windows games better than current Windows does
>>
>>56206939
I'm terribly sorry for interjecting another moment, but what I just told you is GNU/Linux is, in fact, just Linux, or as I've just now taken to calling it, Just.Linux. Linux apparently does happen to be a whole operating system unto itself and comprises a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Most computer users who run the entire Linux system every day already realize it. Through a peculiar turn of events, I was misled into calling the system "GNU/Linux", and until now, I was unaware that it is basically the Linux system, developed by the Linux project.

There really isn't a GNU/Linux, and I really wasn't using it; it is an extraneous misrepresentation of the system that's being used. Linux is the operating system: the entire system made useful by its included corelibs, shell utilities, and other vital system components. The kernel is already an integral part of the Linux operating system, never confined useless by itself; it functions coherently within the context of the complete Linux operating system. Linux is never used in combination with GNU accessories: the whole system is basically Linux without any GNU added, or Just.Linux. All the so-called "GNU/Linux" distributions are really distributions of Linux.
>>

For the record, I mentioned WINE only because I use Minitab with it.
>>
I got fed up with Windows after 10 got released. So I decided to take on the freetard life and I haven't looked back since then.
>>
>>56206894
1. Freedom of choice: I get to choose how to customize my system instead of being forced to stay within the limits given to me by Microsoft. If I don't like something, there are at least 10 alternatives I can choose from.

2. Full disclosure: I can look up what exactly a component is doing instead of having to go by faith. Linux also doesn't try to hide its error messages (at least if you're a terminal user), which makes it a lot easier to know what your PC is doing and why, as well as figuring out why something went wrong.

3. Compatibility: I get to run all POSIX tools, compile software, etc.; without having to jump through all the hoops I had to under windows. Linux is compatible with the rest of the world, Windows was deliberately made as incompatible as possible.

4. Automation: Everything software is managed through my package manager, I don't have to run 50 billion “update clients” or manually check for updates. It's trivial to install cronjobs or timers for whatever task I need done regularly.

5. Security: The many-eyes principle, the fact that I get all of my software through distro packages, the fact that I use software written by enthusiastic hobbyists instead of big corporations and the fact that virtually all clickbait trojans are aimed towards dumb Windows users make me basically immune in combination.

6. It's simply comfy as hell. I've gotten so used to the command line and tiling window managers that it's the only way I enjoy working. Everything else feels slow and sluggish. I've come to love the fact that I can customize the appearance and behavior of everything until it matches my tastes.

7. I can contribute. I'm a developer, why should I be sitting around desperately waiting for upstream to start giving a rat's arse about my problem? I can patch software myself, I can submit those patches upstream, and my bug reports actually matter.

Probably more I'm forgetting.

Had to stop being a Windows fuck slave. It was taking all my time just trying to figure out what new fuckery microsoft was going to probe my anus with every single fucking week.

Is linux better? Yeah. Amazingly better? Not really.

But all the rage at getting raped by microsoft every single fucking minute I was using Windows is now gone. It's been replaced by annoyances and occasional rage, but the rage can be directed into productive channels now to improve my daily working & productivity environment, instead of that helpless rage if getting fucked over at random and losing between 2 and 8 hours accomplishing nothing much of anything with the next fucking coming along in 4 .... 3 ..... 2 .......

Because I got tired of things changing, just for the sake of changing. All this eye candy junk is just distracting and slows my unit down.

Also I like to know what is going on and even better have control over my stuff.

When people started telling me I couldn't use my hardware, just because it was 8 years old. It still works, I understand the lack of new support options that only come with new hardware, but why does that mean the old options stop as well?

At the time I was playing with Linux on a 18 year old unit, as my friends suggested it. Later when all the updates and stuff went bad, I just loaded Linux on the newer unit and in 6 hours of editing it was running better then it ever had. And looking back I wonder, why didn't I do this sooner.

Because at this point it's just simpler. I've never used 8 or 10. I used 7 but it just seemed last like a meh version of winxp. I didn't like 8 and I don't like the 10 million features I don't use in 10. At this point as long as you have enough sense to get supported hardware openbsd/arch is the way to go. At least with Unix os's if something breaks I know I can fix it. If something broke for me on win 10 I wouldn't even know where to look to fix it . Not that it would take long to find out.

As for games I have a console for that, and Bethesda is adding console mod support so literally the only reason to use Windows has just died completely and totally .

1. lets me change everything such as my init system (I use runit instead of systemd or gentoo's default OpenRC), it lets me change the look, it lets me change my TLS implementation, it lets me choose ffmpeg over libav, my system shell, etc

- ~5 second boot on a hdd (I have a dual boot, and windows takes near a minute even with useless services disabled) :)
- Lets me go keyboard only (doesn't force you to use the mouse)
- CLI is soooo much faster than GUI.
- It doesn't cost me anything.
- Security (Gentoo hardened)
- I can automate everything
- Shell scripting is very easy.
- You can interact with the kernel with /proc /sys (helpful sometimes)

Ironically enough, software compatibility was what originally brought me to Linux (yes Richard, it's just Linux). I was taking a robotics class in high school, and I heard about a piece of software called the Gazebo simulation suite which could help my designs a lot. Turns out it was Linux only. So I set up a VM Ubuntu... and realized that a VM would never have the performance I needed to run complex simulations. I set up a dual boot, and after experiencing Linux in its full glory, never went back.

I guess we live in different universes, anon - in my world Linux is the dominant majority and almost everything is written primarily for it (with Windows support often being an afterthought).

Linux is also compatible with POSIX, Unix etc. programs from the past, whereas Microsoft deliberately designed Windows to be incompatible with the rest of the world.

OS X, Linux, BSD, Solaris etc. are all significantly more compatible with each other than Windows is with anything else, so it doesn't surprise me at all that a given piece of software will, on average, be compatible with Linux much more often than with Windows
