I've only used FreeNAS.

Curious to know if there are better.

Just put a proper general-purpose Linux distribution (Or FreeBSD if you're into that, like >>56195348) on it and install what you want. It's not hard, and it's so much more flexible, since you can do things with the computer other than serving files.

FreeBSD + ZFS + jails

has the added benefit of allowing other jails to provide services other than file hosting, like a DNS or web caching server

Assuming I don't have any NAS suitable hardware, is it worth getting the FreeNAS Mini? It's only $999, which is like a fucking low end Macbook, and I hear it's hardware is optimized for NAS, but I'm wondering if there are any better deals.
