- What desktop environment do you use?
- Are you on stable, testing, unstable or a combination?
- Why is Debian rough around the edges on the default (Desktop/Gnome) install in comparison to for example Fedora and how do I fix this?

Stable

It's more difficult to install new packages like the latest mpv but in the end you can still install it with a little more effort compared to other distros
>>

How do you install the latest version? There doesn't seem to be a backport for mpv. Compiling or third party repos don't seem like a good solution either.
>>
>>56192975
This worked for me: https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv-build#instructions-for-debian-and-ubuntu

I had issues with an outdated libass5 but this worked
>>
>>56192975
Wouldn't a better solution be to backport? Or am I missing some way to easily keep an eye on all manually compiled software?

None, was using XFCE but didn't need a full DE. Now on Openbox with tint2 and conky, looks nice and is lighter than XFCE.

don't know, but it's just fine after some minimal themeing (arc + numix and some changes in the menus and it looks and feels good)
