It's more difficult to install new packages like the latest mpv but in the end you can still install it with a little more effort compared to other distros

How do you install the latest version? There doesn't seem to be a backport for mpv. Compiling or third party repos don't seem like a good solution either.

I had issues with an outdated libass5 but this worked

None, was using XFCE but didn't need a full DE. Now on Openbox with tint2 and conky, looks nice and is lighter than XFCE.

don't know, but it's just fine after some minimal themeing (arc + numix and some changes in the menus and it looks and feels good)
